String/Flux Tube Duality on the Lightcone

The equivalence of quantum field theory and string theory as exemplified by the AdS/CFT correspondence is explored from the point of view of lightcone quantization. On the string side we discuss the lightcone version of the static string connecting a heavy external quark source to a heavy external antiquark source, together with small oscillations about the static string configuration. On the field theory side we analyze the weak/strong coupling transition in a ladder diagram model of the quark antiquark system, also from the point of view of the lightcone. Our results are completely consistent with those obtained by more standard covariant methods in the limit of infinitely massive quarks.

String/Gauge Duality: (re)discovering the QCD String in AdS Space

These lectures trace the origin of string theory as a theory of hadronic interactions (predating QCD itself) to the present ideas on how the QCD string may arise in Superstring theory in a suitably deformed background metric. The contributions of 'tHooft's large Nc limit, Maldacena's String/Gauge duality conjecture and lattice spectral data are emphasized to motivate and hopefully guide further efforts to define a fundamental QCD string.

Probing the 5th Dimension with the QCD String

A salient feature of String/Gauge duality is an extra 5th dimension. Here we study the effect of confining deformations of AdS5 and compute the spectrum of a string stretched between infinitely massive quarks and compare it with the quantum states of the QCD flux as determined by Kuti, Juge and Morningstar in lattice simulations. In the long flux tube limit the AdS string probes the metric near the IR cutoff of the 5th dimension with a spectrum approximated by a Nambu-Goto string in 4-d flat space, whereas at short distance the string moves to the UV region with a discrete spectrum for pure AdS5. We also review earlier results on glueballs states and the cross-over between hard and soft diffractive scattering that support this picture.

Mobius Fermions: Improved Domain Wall Chiral Fermions

A new class of domain wall fermions is defined that interpolates between Shamir's and Boriçi's form without increasing the number of Dirac applications per CG iteration. This class represents a full (real) Möbius transformation of the Wilson kernel. Simulations on quenched Wilson lattices with $β= 6.0$ show that the number of lattice sites ($L_s$) in the fifth dimension can be reduced by a factor of 2 or more at fixed value of chiral symmetry violations measured by the residual mass ($m_{res}$).

Chiral Extension of Lattice Gauge Theory

Two approaches are presented to coupling explicit Goldstone modes to $N_f$ flavors of massless quarks preserving exact $SU(N_f) \times SU(N_f)$ chiral symmetry on the lattice. The first approach is a generalization a chiral extension to QCD (aka XQCD) proposed by Brower, Shen and Tan consistent with the Ginsparg-Wilson relation. The second approach based on the Callan,Coleman, Wess and Zumino coset construction has a real determinant atzero quark axial coupling, $g_A = 0$.

Hagedorn transition for strings on pp-waves and tori with chemical potentials

It has been conjectured that string theory in a pp-wave background is dual to a sector of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We study the Hagedorn transition for free strings in this background. We find that the free energy at the transition point is finite suggesting a confinement/deconfinement transition in the gauge theory. In the limit of vanishing mass parameter the free energy matches that of free strings on an 8-torus with momentum/winding chemical potential. The entropy in the microcanonical ensemble with fixed energy and fixed momentum/winding is computed in each case.

Brane World Gravity in an AdS Black Hole

We consider a model of brane world gravity in the context of non-conformal non-SUSY matter. In particular we modify the earlier strong coupling solution to the glueball spectrum in an $AdS^7$ Black Hole by introducing a Randall-Sundrum Planck brane as a UV cut-off. The consequence is a new normalizable zero mass tensor state, which gives rise to an effective Einstein-Hilbert theory of gravity, with exponentially small corrections set by the mass gap to the discrete glueball spectrum. However the simplest microscopic theory for the Planck brane is found to have a tachyonic instability in the radion mode.

Is the Graviton a Domain Wall Glueball?

Strong coupling calculations for the glueball spectrum in an $AdS^7$ black hole are modified by introducing an UV cut-off at a Planck brane. A new normalizable state in the tensor spectrum is found which reproduces Einstein-Hilbert gravity up to exponentially small corrections due to off shell mixing with massive glueballs.

Effective Lagrangian for strongly coupled domain wall fermions

We derive the effective Lagrangian for mesons in lattice gauge theory with domain-wall fermions in the strong-coupling and large-N_c limits. We use the formalism of supergroups to deal with the Pauli-Villars fields, needed to regulate the contributions of the heavy fermions. We calculate the spectrum of pseudo-Goldstone bosons and show that domain wall fermions are doubled and massive in this regime. Since we take the extent and lattice spacing of the fifth dimension to infinity and zero respectively, our conclusions apply also to overlap fermions.

From Black Holes to Pomeron: Tensor Glueball and Pomeron Intercept at Strong Coupling

We briefly review the approach for strong coupling calculation of glueball masses based on the duality between supergravity and Yang-Mills theory. Earlier work is extended to non-zero spin. Fluctuations in the gravitational metric lead to the $2^{++}$ tensor glueball state on the leading Pomeron trajectory with a mass relation: $m(0^{++}) < m(2^{++}) $. In particular, for $QCD_4$, a strong coupling expansion for the Pomeron intercept is obtained.

Glueball Spectrum for QCD from AdS Supergravity Duality

We present the analysis of the complete glueball spectrum for the $AdS^7$ black hole supergravity dual of $QCD_4$ in strong coupling limit: $g^2 N \to \infty$. The bosonic fields in the supergravity multiplet lead to 6 independent wave equations contributing to glueball states with $J^{PC} = 2^{++},1^{+-}, 1^{--}$, $0^{++}$ and $0^{-+}$. We study the spectral splitting and degeneracy patterns for both $QCD_4$ and $QCD_3$. Despite the expected limitations of a leading order strong coupling approximation, the pattern of spins, parities and mass inequalities bear a striking resemblance to the known $QCD_4$ glueball spectrum as determined by lattice simulations at weak coupling.

Hamiltonian domain wall fermions at strong coupling

We apply strong-coupling perturbation theory to gauge theories containing domain-wall fermions in Shamir's surface version. We construct the effective Hamiltonian for the color-singlet degrees of freedom that constitute the low-lying spectrum at strong coupling. We show that the effective theory is identical to that derived from naive, doubled fermions with a mass term, and hence that domain-wall fermions at strong coupling suffer both doubling and explicit breaking of chiral symmetry. Since we employ a continuous fifth dimension whose extent tends to infinity, our result applies to overlap fermions as well.

Fourier Acceleration of Langevin Molecular Dynamics

Fourier acceleration has been successfully applied to the simulation of lattice field theories for more than a decade. In this paper, we extend the method to the dynamics of discrete particles moving in continuum. Although our method is based on a mapping of the particles' dynamics to a regular grid so that discrete Fourier transforms may be taken, it should be emphasized that the introduction of the grid is a purely algorithmic device and that no smoothing, coarse-graining or mean-field approximations are made. The method thus can be applied to the equations of motion of molecular dynamics (MD), or its Langevin or Brownian variants. For example, in Langevin MD simulations our acceleration technique permits a straightforward spectral decomposition of forces so that the long-wavelength modes are integrated with a longer time step, thereby reducing the time required to reach equilibrium or to decorrelate the system in equilibrium. Speedup factors of up to 30 are observed relative to pure (unaccelerated) Langevin MD. As with acceleration of critical lattice models, even further gains relative to the unaccelerated method are expected for larger systems. Preliminary results for Fourier-accelerated molecular dynamics are presented in order to illustrate the basic concepts. Possible extensions of the method and further lines of research are discussed.

From Black Holes to Glueballs: The QCD_3 Tensor Glueball at Strong Coupling

A strong coupling calculation of glueball masses based on the duality between supergravity and Yang-Mills theory is presented. Earlier work is extended to non-zero spin. Fluctuations in the gravitational metric lead to the 2^{++} state on the leading Pomeron trajectory with a mass relation: m(0^{++}) < m(2^{++}) < m(1^{-+}). Contrary to expectation, the mass of our new 0^{++} state (m^2=5.4573) associated with the graviton is smaller than the mass of the ${\tilde 0}^{++}$ state (m^2=11.588) from the dilaton, which in fact is exactly degenerate with the tensor 2^{++}.

Discrete Spectrum of the Graviton in the $AdS^5$ Black Hole Background

The discrete spectrum of fluctuations of the metric about an $AdS^5$ black hole background are found. These modes are the strong coupling limit of so called glueball states in a dual 3-d Yang-Mills theory with quantum numbers $J^{PC} = 2^{++}, 1^{-+}, 0^{++}$. For the ground state modes, we find the mass relation: $m(0^{++}) < m(2^{++}) < m(1^{-+})$. Contrary to expectation, the mass of our new $0^{++}$ state ($m^2=5.4573$) associated with the graviton is smaller than the mass of the $0^{++}$ state ($m^2=11.588$) from the dilaton. In fact the dilatonic excitations are exactly degenerate with our tensor $2^{++}$ states. We find that variational methods gives remarkably accurate mass estimates for all three low-lying levels while a WKB treatment describes the higher modes well.

THE QCD ABACUS: A New Formulation for Lattice Gauge Theories

A quantum Hamiltonian is constructed for SU(3) lattice QCD entirely from color triplet Fermions --- the standard quarks and a new Fermionic ``constituent'' of the gluon we call ``rishons''. The quarks are represented by Dirac spinors on each site and the gauge fields by rishon-antirishon bilinears on each link which together with the local gauge transforms are the generators of an SU(6) algebra. The effective Lagrangian for the path integral lives in $R^4 \times S^1$ Euclidean space with a compact ``fifth time'' of circumference ($β$) and non-Abelian charge ($e^2$) both of which carry dimensions of length. For large $β$, it is conjectured that continuum QCD is reached and that the dimensionless ratio $g^2 = e^2/β$ becomes the QCD gauge coupling. The quarks are introduced as Kaplan chiral Fermions at either end of the finite slab in fifth time. This talk will emphasize the gauge and algebraic structure of the rishon or link Fermions and the special properties that may lead to fast discrete dynamics for numerical simulations and new theoretical insight.

Magnetic monopole loop for the Yang-Mills instanton

We investigate 't Hooft-Mandelstam monopoles in QCD in the presence of a single classical instanton configuration. The solution to the Maximal Abelian projection is found to be a circular monopole trajectory with radius $R$ centered on the instanton. At zero loop radius, there is a marginally stable (or flat) direction for loop formation to $O(R^4 logR)$. We argue that loops will form, in the semi-classical limit, due to small perturbations such as the dipole interaction between instanton anti-instanton pairs. As the instanton gas becomes a liquid, the percolation of the monopole loops may therefore provide a semi-classical precursor to the confinement mechanism.

Chirally Extended Quantum Chromodynamics

We propose an extended Quantum Chromodynamics (XQCD) Lagrangian in which the fermions are coupled to elementary scalar %$σ$ and $π$ fields through a Yukawa coupling which preserves chiral invariance. Our principle motivation is to find a new lattice formulation for QCD which avoids the source of critical slowing down usually encountered as the bare quark mass is tuned to the chiral limit. The phase diagram and the weak coupling limit for XQCD are studied. They suggest a conjecture that the continuum limit of XQCD is the same as the continuum limit of conventional lattice formulation of QCD. As examples of such universality, we present the large N solutions of two prototype models for XQCD, in which the mass of the spurious pion and sigma resonance go to infinity with the cut-off. Even if the universality conjecture turns out to be false, we believe that XQCD will still be useful as a low energy effective action for QCD phenomenology on the lattice. Numerical simulations are recommended to further investigate the possible benefits of XQCD in extracting QCD predictions. Postscript files for figures are attached.
