Degenerate stochastic differential equations arising from catalytic branching networks

We establish existence and uniqueness for the martingale problem associated with a system of degenerate SDE's representing a catalytic branching network. For example, in the hypercyclic case: $$dX_{t}^{(i)}=b_i(X_t)dt+\sqrt{2γ_{i}(X_{t}) X_{t}^{(i+1)}X_{t}^{(i)}}dB_{t}^{i}, X_t^{(i)}\ge 0, i=1,..., d,$$ where $X^{(d+1)}\equiv X^{(1)}$, existence and uniqueness is proved when $γ$ and $b$ are continuous on the positive orthant, $γ$ is strictly positive, and $b_i>0$ on $\{x_i=0\}$. The special case $d=2$, $b_i=θ_i-x_i$ is required in work of Dawson-Greven-den Hollander-Sun-Swart on mean fields limits of block averages for 2-type branching models on a hierarchical group. The proofs make use of some new methods, including Cotlar's lemma to establish asymptotic orthogonality of the derivatives of an associated semigroup at different times, and a refined integration by parts technique from Dawson-Perkins]. As a by-product of the proof we obtain the strong Feller property of the associated resolvent.

Pathwise uniqueness for a degenerate stochastic differential equation

We introduce a new method of proving pathwise uniqueness, and we apply it to the degenerate stochastic differential equation \[dX_t=|X_t|^α dW_t,\] where $W_t$ is a one-dimensional Brownian motion and $α\in(0,1/2)$. Weak uniqueness does not hold for the solution to this equation. If one restricts attention, however, to those solutions that spend zero time at 0, then pathwise uniqueness does hold and a strong solution exists. We also consider a class of stochastic differential equations with reflection.

The martingale problem for a class of stable-like processes

Let $α\in (0,2)$ and consider the operator $$L f(x) =\int [f(x+h)-f(x)-1_{(|h|\leq 1)} \nabla f(x)\cdot h] \frac{A(x,h)}{|h|^{d+α}} dh, $$ where the $\nabla f(x)\cdot h$ term is omitted if $α<1$. We consider the martingale problem corresponding to the operator $L$ and under mild conditions on the function $A$ prove that there exists a unique solution.

Frequent points for random walks in two dimensions

For a symmetric random walk in $Z^2$ which does not necessarily have bounded jumps we study those points which are visited an unusually large number of times. We prove the analogue of the Erdős-Taylor conjecture and obtain the asymptotics for the number of visits to the most visited site. We also obtain the asymptotics for the number of points which are visited very frequently by time $n$. Among the tools we use are Harnack inequalities and Green's function estimates for random walks with unbounded jumps; some of these are of independent interest.

Moderate deviations for the range of planar random walks

Given a symmetric random walk in $Z^2$ with finite second moments, let $R_n$ be the range of the random walk up to time $n$. We study moderate deviations for $R_n -E R_n$ and $E R_n -R_n$. We also derive the corresponding laws of the iterated logarithm.

The submartingale problem for a class of degenerate elliptic operators

We consider the degenerate elliptic operator acting on $C^2$ functions on $[0,\infty)^d$: \[ L f(x)=\sum_{i=1}^d a_i(x) x_i^{α_i} \frac{\partial^2 f}{\partial x_i^2} (x) +\sum_{i=1}^d b_i(x) \frac{\partial f}{\partial x_i}(x), \] where the $a_i$ are continuous functions that are bounded above and below by positive constants, the $b_i$ are bounded and measurable, and the $α_i\in (0,1)$. We impose Neumann boundary conditions on the boundary of $[0,\infty)^d$. There will not be uniqueness for the submartingale problem corresponding to $L$. If we consider, however, only those solutions to the submartingale problem for which the process spends 0 time on the boundary, then existence and uniqueness for the submartingale problem for $L$ holds within this class. Our result is equivalent to establishing weak uniqueness for the system of stochastic differential equations \[ dX_t^i=\sqrt{2a_i(X_t)} (X_t^i)^{α_i/2} dW^i_t+b_i(X_t) dt +dL_t^{X^i}, where X^i_t\geq 0, \] where $W_t^i$ are independent Brownian motions and $L^{X_i}_t$ is a local time at 0 for $X^i$.

Symmetric Markov chains on $\Bbb Z^d$ with unbounded range

We consider symmetric Markov chains on $\Bbb Z^d$ where we do {\bf not} assume that the conductance between two points must be zero if the points are far apart. Under a uniform second moment condition on the conductances, we obtain upper bounds on the transition probabilities, estimates for exit time probabilities, and certain lower bounds on the transition probabilities. We show that a uniform Harnack inequality holds if an additional assumption is made, but that without this assumption such an inequality need not hold. We establish a central limit theorem giving conditions for a sequence of normalized symmetric Markov chains to converge to a diffusion on $\Bbb R^d$ corresponding to an elliptic operator in divergence form.

Moderate deviations and laws of the iterated logarithm for the renormalized self-intersection local times of planar random walks

Let B_n be the number of self-intersections of a symmetric random walk with finite second moments in the integer planar lattice. We obtain moderate deviation estimates for B_n - E B_n and E B_n- B_n, which are given in terms of the best constant of a certain Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality. We also prove the corresponding laws of the iterated logarithm.

Infinite dimensional stochastic differential equations of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type

We consider the operator $$\sL f(x)=\tfrac12 \sum_{i,j=1}^\infty a_{ij}(x)\frac{\del^2 f}{\del x_i \del x_j}(x)-\sum_{i=1}^\infty \lam_i x_i b_i(x) \frac{\del f}{\del x_i}(x).$$ We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to the martingale problem for this operator under appropriate conditions on the $a_{ij}, b_i$, and $\lam_i$. The process corresponding to $\sL$ solves an infinite dimensional stochastic differential equation similar to that for the infinite dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.

An almost sure invariance principle for renormalized intersection local times

Let β_k(n) be the number of self-intersections of order k, appropriately renormalized, for a mean zero random walk X_n in Z^2 with 2+δmoments. On a suitable probability space we can construct X_n and a planar Brownian motion W_t such that for each k\geq 2, |β_k(n)-γ_k(n)|=O(n^{-a}), a.s. for some a>0 where γ_k(n) is the renormalized self-intersection local time of order k at time 1 for the Brownian motion W_{nt}/\sqrt n.

An almost sure invariance principle for the range of planar random walks

For a symmetric random walk in $Z^2$ with $2+δ$ moments, we represent $|\mathcal{R}(n)|$, the cardinality of the range, in terms of an expansion involving the renormalized intersection local times of a Brownian motion. We show that for each $k\geq 1$ \[ (\log n)^k [ \frac{1}{n} |\mathcal{R}(n)| +\sum_{j=1}^k (-1)^j (\textstyle{\frac1{2π}}\log n +c_X)^{-j} γ_{j,n}]\to 0, \qquad a.s. \] where $W_t$ is a Brownian motion, $W^{(n)}_t=W_{nt}/\sqrt n$, $γ_{j,n}$ is the renormalized intersection local time at time 1 for $W^{(n)}$, and $c_X$ is a constant depending on the distribution of the random walk.

Stochastic bifurcation models

We study an ordinary differential equation controlled by a stochastic process. We present results on existence and uniqueness of solutions, on associated local times (Trotter and Ray-Knight theorems), and on time and direction of bifurcation. A relationship with Lipschitz approximations to Brownian paths is also discussed.

Coupling and Harnack inequalities for Sierpinski carpets

Uniform Harnack inequalities for harmonic functions on the pre- and graphical Sierpinski carpets are proved using a probabilistic coupling argument. Various results follow from this, including the construction of Brownian motion on Sierpinski carpets embedded in $\R^d$, $d\geq 3$, estimates on the fundamental solution of the heat equation, and Sobolev and Poincaré inequalities.
