The ghost stairs stabilize to sharp symplectic embedding obstructions

In determining when a four-dimensional ellipsoid can be symplectically embedded into a ball, McDuff and Schlenk found an infinite sequence of "ghost" obstructions that generate an infinite "ghost staircase" determined by the even index Fibonacci numbers. The ghost obstructions are not visible for the four-dimensional embedding problem because strictly stronger obstructions also exist. We show that in contrast, the embedding constraints associated to the ghost obstructions are sharp for the stabilized problem; moreover, the corresponding optimal embeddings are given by symplectic folding. The proof introduces several ideas of independent interest, namely: (i) an improved version of the index inequality familiar from the theory of embedded contact homology (ECH), (ii) new applications of relative intersection theory in the context of neck stretching analysis, (iii) a new approach to estimating the ECH grading of multiply covered elliptic orbits in terms of areas and continued fractions, and (iv) a new technique for understanding the ECH of ellipsoids by constructing explicit bijections between certain sets of lattice points.

Some optimal embeddings of symplectic ellipsoids

We construct symplectic embeddings of ellipsoids of dimension $2n \ge 6$ into the product of a 4-ball or 4-dimensional cube with Euclidean space. A sequence of these embeddings can be shown to be optimal.

Packing stability for symplectic $4$-manifolds

We show that all closed symplectic 4-manifolds have the packing stability property: there are no obstructions beyond volume to embedding a collection of sufficiently small balls. This generalizes a theorem of Biran which gives the same result under the assumption that the symplectic form lies in a rational cohomology class.

New obstructions to symplectic embeddings

In this paper we establish new restrictions on symplectic embeddings of certain convex domains into symplectic vector spaces. These restrictions are stronger than those implied by the Ekeland-Hofer capacities. By refining an embedding technique due to Guth, we also show that they are sharp.

Symplectormophism groups of non-compact manifolds, orbifold balls, and a space of Lagrangians

We establish connections between contact isometry groups of certain contact manifolds and compactly supported symplectomorphism groups of their symplectizations. We apply these results to investigate the space of symplectic embeddings of balls with a single conical singularity at the origin. Using similar ideas, we also prove the longstanding expected result that the space of Lagrangian $\RR P^2$ in $T^*\RR P^2$ is weakly contractible.

Symplectic embeddings of polydisks

In this note, we obtain new obstructions to symplectic embeddings of a product of disks (a polydisk) into a 4-dimensional ball. The polydisk P(r,s) is the product of the disk of area r with the disk of area s. The ball of capacity a, denoted B(a), is the ball with πr^2 \le a. We show P(1,2) embeds in B^4(a) if and only if a is at least 3. This shows the inclusion of P(1,2) in B^4(3) is optimal. The necessity of a \ge 3 implies that for this particular embedding problem neither the Ekeland-Hofer nor ECH capacities give a sharp obstruction. We contrast this with the case of ellipsoid embeddings into a ball when the ECH capacities give a complete list of obstructions [McDuff 2011]. Our obstruction does not come from a symplectic capacity, but instead from pseudoholomorphic foliations, thus the techniques seem to be special to dimension 4.

On non-pure forms on almost complex manifolds

T.-J. Li and W. Zhang defined an almost complex structure $J$ on a manifold $X$ to be {\em \Cpf}, if the second de Rham cohomology group can be decomposed as a direct sum of the subgroups whose elements are cohomology classes admitting $J$-invariant and $J$-anti-invariant representatives. It turns out (see T. Draghici, T.-J. Li and W. Zhang) that any almost complex structure on a 4-dimensional compact manifold is \Cpf. We study the $J$-invariant and $J$-anti-invariant cohomology subgroups on almost complex manifolds, possibly non compact. In particular, we prove an analytic continuation result for anti-invariant forms on almost complex manifolds.

Symplectic embeddings of ellipsoids in dimension greater than four

We study symplectic embeddings of ellipsoids into balls. In the main construction, we show that a given embedding of 2m-dimensional ellipsoids can be suspended to embeddings of ellipsoids in any higher dimension. In dimension 6,s if the ratio of the areas of any two axes is sufficiently large then the ellipsoid is flexible in the sense that it fully fills a ball. We also show that the same property holds in all dimensions for sufficiently thin ellipsoids E(1,..., a). A consequence of our study is that in arbitrary dimension a ball can be fully filled by any sufficiently large number of identical smaller balls, thus generalizing a result of Biran valid in dimension 4.

Ellipsoid embeddings and symplectic packing stability

We prove packing stability for any closed symplectic manifold with rational cohomology class. This will rely on a general symplectic embedding result for ellipsoids which assumes only that there is no volume obstruction and that the domain is sufficiently thin relative to the target. We also obtain easily computable bounds for the Embedded Contact Homology capacities which are sufficient to imply the existence of some volume preserving embeddings in dimension 4.

Lagrangian spheres in S^2 x S^2

We prove that all Lagrangian spheres in S^2 x S^2 are Hamiltonian isotopic. The proof uses various properties of holomorphic curves in symplectic manifolds with cylindrical ends which were recently developed in connection with the Symplectic Field Theory.
