Symmetries and Higher-Form Connections in Derived Differential Geometry

We introduce a general definition of higher-form connections on principal $\infty$-bundles in differential geometry. This is achieved by developing the formal differentiation and integration of maps from smooth manifolds to derived stacks with sufficient deformation theory. That allows us to introduce the Atiyah $L_\infty$-algebroid of a principal $\infty$-bundle and establish its global sections as the $L_\infty$-algebra of the derived higher symmetry group of the bundle. We define the space of $p$-form connections on an $\infty$-bundle as the space of order $p$ splittings of its Atiyah $L_\infty$-algebroid. This can be cast equivalently as lifting the classifying map of a bundle on a manifold to the order $p$ truncation of the de Rham stack of the manifold. We demonstrate that our new concept of derived geometric $p$-form connections recovers the known notion of connections on higher U(1)-bundles defined via Čech-Deligne differential cocycles. We further relate the $L_\infty$-algebras of derived higher symmetries of higher U(1)-bundles and higher Courant algebroids. Some applications in higher gauge theory and in supergravity are mentioned.

BV quantization of $ϕ^3$-theory on $λ$-Minkowski space: Tree-level correlation functions

We review the quantization of scalar field theory on $λ$-Minkowski space using the Batalin--Vilkovisky (BV) formalism. We consider $ϕ^3$-theory in two different quantization schemes: standard and braided. While standard BV quantization is based on an ordinary $L_\infty$-algebra, braided BV quantization is based on a braided $L_\infty$-algebra. We compare the tree-level three-point and four-point correlation functions in the two approaches. For the four-point function, standard quantization leads to two inequivalent classes of diagrams with different noncommutative contributions, whereas braided quantization yields only a single class of diagrams with noncommutativity entering solely through an overall phase factor depending on the external momenta.

Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization with an angular twist

We construct cubic scalar field theory on $λ$-Minkowski space by combining the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism with harmonic analysis, and produce two inequivalent noncommutative quantum field theories. The braided theory is based on a braided $L_\infty$-algebra whereby covariance dictates a spectral decomposition into cylindrical Bessel functions that diagonalise the angular Drinfel'd twist; in this theory we find the usual logarithmic ultraviolet divergences and confirm the absence of UV/IR mixing. The standard noncommutative theory is based on a classical $L_\infty$-algebra; in this theory we relate the spectral decompositions into plane wave and cylindrical harmonic eigenmodes of the Klein-Gordan operator, we verify the planar equivalence theorem, and we demonstrate a periodic form of UV/IR mixing in which non-planar correlators are generically ultraviolet finite but become non-analytic on an infinite lattice of exceptional momenta.

Generalised Complex and Spinor Relations

Courant algebroid relations are used to define notions of relations between Dirac structures and spinors. It is shown under which circumstances a spinor relation gives a Courant algebroid relation and how it descends to a relation between Dirac structures. A converse to this result is proved: a T-duality relation induces a spinor relation that links the Dirac generating operators defining T-dual Courant algebroids, generalising the isomorphism of twisted cohomology associated with topological T-duality. We introduce the notion of relation between generalised complex structures and characterise their reduction. We also define relations between generalised Kähler structures, and rephrase them in terms of bi-Hermitian structures which induce T-duality relations between $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric sigma-models. We prove existence results for T-dual structures, and demonstrate compatibility of T-duality relations with Type II supergravity equations.

Noncommutative Geometry of Gravity, Strings and Fields: A Panoramic Overview

These are expanded lecture notes of a mini-course whose objectives were to introduce the basic concepts, constructions and techniques of noncommutative geometry, as well as their uses as a framework for modelling quantum spacetime. Key mathematical approaches presented include operator algebras such as $C^*$-algebras, K-theory, spectral geometry, quantum groups, and deformation quantization. Physical application areas considered include string theory, quantum field theory, and the Standard Model, as well as certain condensed matter systems.

Courant Algebroid Relations, T-Dualities and Generalised Ricci Flow

The notion of Courant algebroid relation is used to introduce a definition of relation between divergence operators on Courant algebroids. By introducing invariant divergence operators, a notion of generalised T-duality between divergences is presented through an existence and uniqueness result for related divergence operators on T-dual pairs of exact Courant algebroids, which naturally incorporates the dilaton shift. When combined with the notion of generalised isometry, this establishes circumstances under which generalised Ricci tensors are related, proving that T-duality is compatible with generalised string background equations. This enables an analysis of the compatibility between T-duality and generalised Ricci flow, showing that the T-dual of a solution of generalised Ricci flow is also a solution of generalised Ricci flow. Our constructions are illustrated through many explicit examples.

Tetrahedron Instantons on Orbifolds

Given a homomorphism $τ$ from a suitable finite group $\mathsfΓ$ to $\mathsf{SU}(4)$ with image $\mathsfΓ^τ$, we construct a cohomological gauge theory on a noncommutative resolution of the quotient singularity $\mathbb{C}^4/\mathsfΓ^τ$ whose BRST fixed points are $\mathsfΓ$-invariant tetrahedron instantons on a generally non-effective orbifold. The partition function computes the expectation values of complex codimension one defect operators in rank $r$ cohomological Donaldson-Thomas theory on a flat gerbe over the quotient stack $[\mathbb{C}^4/\,\mathsfΓ^τ]$. We describe the generalized ADHM parametrization of the tetrahedron instanton moduli space, and evaluate the orbifold partition functions through virtual torus localization. If $\mathsfΓ$ is an abelian group the partition function is expressed as a combinatorial series over arrays of $\mathsfΓ$-coloured plane partitions, while if $\mathsfΓ$ is non-abelian the partition function localizes onto a sum over torus-invariant connected components of the moduli space labelled by lower-dimensional partitions. When $\mathsfΓ=\mathbb{Z}_n$ is a finite abelian subgroup of $\mathsf{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$, we exhibit the reduction of Donaldson-Thomas theory on the toric Calabi-Yau four-orbifold $\mathbb{C}^2/\,\mathsfΓ\times\mathbb{C}^2$ to the cohomological field theory of tetrahedron instantons, from which we express the partition function as a closed infinite product formula. We also use the crepant resolution correpondence to derive a closed formula for the partition function on any polyhedral singularity.

T-Dualities and Courant Algebroid Relations

We develop a new approach to T-duality based on Courant algebroid relations which subsumes the usual T-duality as well as its various generalisations. Starting from a relational description for the reduction of exact Courant algebroids over foliated manifolds, we introduce a weakened notion of generalised isometries that captures the generalised geometry counterpart of Riemannian submersions when applied to transverse generalised metrics. This is used to construct T-dual backgrounds as generalised metrics on reduced Courant algebroids which are related by a generalised isometry. We prove an existence and uniqueness result for generalised isometric exact Courant algebroids coming from reductions. We demonstrate that our construction reproduces standard T-duality relations based on correspondence spaces. We also describe how it applies to generalised T-duality transformations of almost para-Hermitian manifolds.

Braided scalar quantum field theory

We formulate scalar field theories in a curved braided $L_\infty$-algebra formalism and analyse their correlation functions using Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization. We perform detailed calculations in cubic braided scalar field theory up to two-loop order and three-point multiplicity. The divergent tadpole contributions are eliminated by a suitable choice of central curvature for the $L_\infty$-structure, and we confirm the absence of UV/IR mixing. The calculations of higher loop and higher multiplicity correlators in homological perturbation theory are facilitated by the introduction of a novel diagrammatic calculus. We derive an algebraic version of the Schwinger-Dyson equations based on the homological perturbation lemma, and use them to prove the braided Wick theorem.

Braided Scalar Quantum Electrodynamics

We formulate scalar electrodynamics in the braided $L_\infty$-algebra formalism and study its perturbative expansion in the algebraic framework of Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization. We confirm that UV/IR mixing is absent at one-loop order in this noncommutative field theory, and that the non-anomalous Ward-Takahashi identities for the braided gauge symmetry are satisfied.

An algebraic formulation of nonassociative quantum mechanics

We develop a version of quantum mechanics that can handle nonassociative algebras of observables and which reduces to standard quantum theory in the traditional associative setting. Our algebraic approach is naturally probabilistic and is based on using the universal enveloping algebra of a general nonassociative algebra to introduce a generalized notion of associative composition product. We formulate properties of states together with notions of trace, and use them to develop GNS constructions. We describe Heisenberg and Schrödinger pictures of completely positive dynamics, and we illustrate our formalism on the explicit examples of finite-dimensional matrix Jordan algebras as well as the octonion algebra.

Higher form symmetries and orbifolds of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory

We undertake a detailed study of the gaugings of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory by its intrinsic charge conjugation 0-form and centre 1-form global symmetries, elucidating their higher algebraic and geometric structures, as well as the meaning of dual lower form symmetries. Our derivations of orbifold gauge theories make use of a combination of standard continuum path integral methods, networks of topological defects, and techniques from higher gauge theory. We provide a unified description of higher and lower form gauge fields for a $p$-form symmetry in the geometric setting of $p$-gerbes, and derive reverse orbifolds by the dual $(-1)$-form symmetries. We identify those orbifolds in which charge conjugation symmetry is spontaneously broken, and relate the breaking to mixed anomalies involving $(-1)$-form symmetries. We extend these considerations to gaugings by the non-invertible 1-form symmetries of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory by introducing a notion of generalized $θ$-angle.

Symplectic Groupoids and Poisson Electrodynamics

We develop a geometric approach to Poisson electrodynamics, that is, the semi-classical limit of noncommutative $U(1)$ gauge theory. Our framework is based on an integrating symplectic groupoid for the underlying Poisson brackets, which we interpret as the classical phase space of a point particle on noncommutative spacetime. In this picture gauge fields arise as bisections of the symplectic groupoid while gauge transformations are parameterized by Lagrangian bisections. We provide a geometric construction of a gauge invariant action functional which minimally couples a dynamical charged particle to a background electromagnetic field. Our constructions are elucidated by several explicit examples, demonstrating the appearances of curved and even compact momentum spaces, the interplay between gauge transformations and spacetime diffeomorphisms, as well as emergent gravity phenomena.

Gravity versus Noncommutative Gauge Theory: A Double Copy Perspective

We discuss how Moyal deformations of gauge theories, which arise naturally from open string theory, fit into the paradigm of colour-kinematics duality and the double copy of gauge theory to gravity. Along the way we encounter novel noncommutative scalar field theories with rigid colour symmetry that have no interacting commutative counterparts. These scalar theories offer new perspectives on old ideas that rank one noncommutative gauge theories are gravitational theories. This is rendered explicit in four dimensions where they and their double copy images yield deformations of integrable theories describing the self-dual sectors of Yang-Mills theory and gravity.

Godbillon-Vey Invariants of Non-Lorentzian Spacetimes and Aristotelian Hydrodynamics

We study the geometry of foliated non-Lorentzian spacetimes in terms of the Godbillon-Vey class of the foliation. We relate the intrinsic torsion of a foliated Aristotelian manifold to its Godbillon-Vey class, and interpret it as a measure of the local spin of the spatial leaves in the time direction. With this characterisation, the Godbillon-Vey class is an obstruction to integrability of the $\mathsf{G}$-structure defining the Aristotelian spacetime. We use these notions to formulate a new geometric approach to hydrodynamics of fluid flows by endowing them with Aristotelian structures. We establish conditions under which the Godbillon-Vey class represents an obstruction to steady flow of the fluid and prove new conservation laws.

Instanton Counting and Donaldson-Thomas Theory on Toric Calabi-Yau Four-Orbifolds

We study rank $r$ cohomological Donaldson-Thomas theory on a toric Calabi-Yau orbifold of $\mathbb{C}^4$ by a finite abelian subgroup $\mathsfΓ$ of $\mathsf{SU}(4)$, from the perspective of instanton counting in cohomological gauge theory on a noncommutative crepant resolution of the quotient singularity. We describe the moduli space of noncommutative instantons on $\mathbb{C}^4/\mathsfΓ$ and its generalized ADHM parametrization. Using toric localization, we compute the orbifold instanton partition function as a combinatorial series over $r$-vectors of $\mathsfΓ$-coloured solid partitions. When the $\mathsfΓ$-action fixes an affine line in $\mathbb{C}^4$, we exhibit the dimensional reduction to rank $r$ Donaldson-Thomas theory on the toric Kahler three-orbifold $\mathbb{C}^3/\mathsfΓ$. Based on this reduction and explicit calculations, we conjecture closed infinite product formulas, in terms of generalized MacMahon functions, for the instanton partition functions on the orbifolds $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_n\times\mathbb{C}^2$ and $\mathbb{C}^3/(\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2)\times\mathbb{C}$, finding perfect agreement with new mathematical results of Cao, Kool and Monavari.

Homotopy double copy of noncommutative gauge theories

We discuss the double copy formulation of Moyal-Weyl type noncommutative gauge theories from the homotopy algebraic perspective of factorisations of $L_\infty$-algebras. We define new noncommutative scalar field theories with rigid colour symmetries taking the role of the zeroth copy, where the deformed colour algebra plays the role of a kinematic algebra; some of these theories have a trivial classical limit but exhibit colour-kinematics duality, from which we construct the double copy theory explicitly. We show that noncommutative gauge theories exhibit a twisted form of colour-kinematics duality, which we use to show that their double copies match with the commutative case. We illustrate this explicitly for Chern-Simons theory, and also for Yang-Mills theory where we obtain a modified Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relation whose momentum kernel is linked to a binoncommutative biadjoint scalar theory. We reinterpret rank one noncommutative gauge theories as double copy theories, and discuss how our findings tie in with recent discussions of Moyal-Weyl deformations of self-dual Yang-Mills theory and gravity.

Braided Quantum Electrodynamics

The homotopy algebraic formalism of braided noncommutative field theory is used to define the explicit example of braided electrodynamics, that is, $\mathsf{U}(1)$ gauge theory minimally coupled to a Dirac fermion. We construct the braided $L_\infty$-algebra of this field theory and obtain the braided equations of motion, action functional and conserved matter current. The modifications of the electric charge conservation law due to the braided noncommutative deformation are described. We develop a braided generalization of Wick's theorem, and use it to compute correlation functions of the braided quantum field theory using homological perturbation theory. Our putative calculations indicate that the braided theory does not contain the non-planar Feynman diagrams of conventional noncommutative quantum field theory, and that correlators do not exhibit UV/IR mixing.
