Multipliers on bi-parameter Haar system Hardy spaces

Let $(h_I)$ denote the standard Haar system on $[0,1]$, indexed by $I\in \mathcal D$, the set of dyadic intervals and $h_I\otimes h_J$ denote the tensor product $(s,t)\mapsto h_I(s) h_J(t)$, $I,J\in \mathcal D$. We consider a class of two-parameter function spaces which are completions of the linear span $\mathcal{V}(\delta^2)$ of $h_I\otimes h_J$, $I,J\in \mathcal D$. This class contains all the spaces of the form $X(Y)$, where $X$ and $Y$ are either the Lebesgue spaces $L_p[0,1]$ or the Hardy spaces $H_p[0,1]$, $1\le p<\infty$. We say that $D\colon X(Y)\to X(Y)$ is a Haar multiplier if $D(h_I\otimes h_J) = d_{I,J} h_I\otimes h_J$, where $d_{I,J}\in \mathbb{R}$, and ask which more elementary operators factor through $D$. A decisive role plays the {\em Capon projection} $\mathcal{C}\colon \mathcal{V}(\delta^2)\to \mathcal{V}(\delta^2)$ given by $\mathcal{C} h_I\otimes h_J = h_I\otimes h_J$ if $|I|\leq |J|$, and $\mathcal{C} h_I\otimes h_J = 0$ if $|I| > |J|$, as our main result highlights: Given any bounded Haar multiplier $D\colon X(Y)\to X(Y)$, there exist $\lambda,\mu\in \mathbb{R}$ such that \begin{equation*} \text{$\lambda \mathcal{C} + \mu (\mathrm{Id}-\mathcal{C})$ approximately $1$-projectionally factors through $D$,} \end{equation*} i.e., for all $\eta>0$, there exist bounded operators $A,B$ so that $AB$ is the identity operator $\mathrm{Id}$, $\|A\|\cdot\|B\|=1$ and $\|\lambda \mathcal{C} + \mu (\mathrm{Id}-\mathcal{C}) - ADB\|<\eta$. Additionally, if $\mathcal{C}$ is unbounded on $X(Y)$, then $\lambda = \mu$ and then $\mathrm{Id}$ either factors through $D$ or $\mathrm{Id}-D$.

Factorization in Haar system Hardy spaces

A Haar system Hardy space is the completion of the linear span of the Haar system $(h_I)_I$, either under a rearrangement-invariant norm $\|\cdot \|$ or under the associated square function norm \begin{equation*} \Bigl\| \sum_Ia_Ih_I \Bigr\|_{*} = \Bigl\| \Bigl( \sum_I a_I^2 h_I^2 \Bigr)^{1/2} \Bigr\|. \end{equation*} Apart from $L^p$, $1\le p<\infty$, the class of these spaces includes all separable rearrangement-invariant function spaces on $[0,1]$ and also the dyadic Hardy space $H^1$. Using a unified and systematic approach, we prove that a Haar system Hardy space $Y$ with $Y\ne C(\Delta)$ ($C(\Delta)$ denotes the continuous functions on the Cantor set) has the following properties, which are closely related to the primariness of $Y$: For every bounded linear operator $T$ on $Y$, the identity $I_Y$ factors either through $T$ or through $I_Y - T$, and if $T$ has large diagonal with respect to the Haar system, then the identity factors through $T$. In particular, we obtain that \begin{equation*} \mathcal{M}_Y = \{ T\in \mathcal{B}(Y) : I_Y \ne ATB\text{ for all } A, B\in \mathcal{B}(Y) \} \end{equation*} is the unique maximal ideal of the algebra $\mathcal{B}(Y)$ of bounded linear operators on $Y$. Moreover, we prove similar factorization results for the spaces $\ell^p(Y)$, $1\le p \leq \infty$, and use them to show that they are primary.

Factorisation in stopping-time Banach spaces: identifying unique maximal ideals

Stopping-time Banach spaces is a collective term for the class of spaces of eventually null integrable processes that are defined in terms of the behaviour of the stopping times with respect to some fixed filtration. From the point of view of Banach space theory, these spaces in many regards resemble the classical spaces such as $L^1$ or $C(\Delta)$, but unlike these, they do have unconditional bases. In the present paper we study the canonical bases in the stopping-time spaces in relation to factorising the identity operator thereon. Since we work exclusively with the dyadic-tree filtration, this set-up enables us to work with tree-indexed bases rather than directly with stochastic processes. \emph{En route} to the factorisation results, we develop general criteria that allow one to deduce the uniqueness of the maximal ideal in the algebra of operators on a Banach space. These criteria are applicable to many classical Banach spaces such as (mixed-norm) $L^p$-spaces, BMO, $\mathrm{SL^\infty}$ and others.

The space $L_1(L_p)$ is primary for $1<p<\infty$

The classical Banach space $L_1(L_p)$ consists of measurable scalar functions $f$ on the unit square for which $$\|f\| = \int_0^1\Big(\int_0^1 |f(x,y)|^p dy\Big)^{1/p}dx < \infty.$$ We show that $L_1(L_p)$ $(1 < p < \infty)$ is primary, meaning that, whenever $L_1(L_p) = E\oplus F$ then either $E$ or $F$ is isomorphic to $L_1(L_p)$. More generally we show that $L_1(X)$ is primary, for a large class of rearrangement invariant Banach function spaces.

Subsymmetric bases have the factorization property

We show that every subsymmetric Schauder basis $(e_j)$ of a Banach space $X$ has the factorization property, i.e. $I_X$ factors through every bounded operator $T\colon X\to X$ with a $\delta$-large diagonal (that is $\inf_j |\langle Te_j, e_j^*\rangle| \geq \delta > 0$, where the $(e_j^*)$ are the biorthogonal functionals to $(e_j)$). Even if $X$ is a non-separable dual space with a subsymmetric weak$^*$ Schauder basis $(e_j)$, we prove that if $(e_j)$ is non-$\ell^1$-splicing (there is no disjointly supported $\ell^1$-sequence in $X$), then $(e_j)$ has the factorization property. The same is true for $\ell^p$-direct sums of such Banach spaces for all $1\leq p\leq \infty$. Moreover, we find a condition for an unconditional basis $(e_j)_{j=1}^n$ of a Banach space $X_n$ in terms of the quantities $\|e_1+\ldots+e_n\|$ and $\|e_1^*+\ldots+e_n^*\|$ under which an operator $T\colon X_n\to X_n$ with $\delta$-large diagonal can be inverted when restricted to $X_\sigma = [e_j : j\in\sigma]$ for a "large" set $\sigma\subset \{1,\ldots,n\}$ (restricted invertibility of $T$; see Bourgain and Tzafriri [Israel J. Math. 1987, London Math. Soc. Lecture Note Ser. 1989). We then apply this result to subsymmetric bases to obtain that operators $T$ with a $\delta$-large diagonal defined on any space $X_n$ with a subsymmetric basis $(e_j)$ can be inverted on $X_\sigma$ for some $\sigma$ with $|\sigma|\geq c n^{1/4}$.

Strategically reproducible bases and the factorization property

We introduce the concept of strategically reproducible bases in Banach spaces and show that operators which have large diagonal with respect to strategically reproducible bases are factors of the identity. We give several examples of classical Banach spaces in which the Haar system is strategically reproducible: multi-parameter Lebesgue spaces, mixed-norm Hardy spaces and most significantly the space $L^1$. Moreover, we show the strategical reproducibility is inherited by unconditional sums.

Subsymmetric weak$^*$ Schauder bases and factorization of the identity

Let $X^*$ denote a Banach space with a subsymmetric weak$^*$ Schauder basis satisfying condition~\eqref{eq:condition-c}. We show that for any operator $T : X^*\to X^*$, either $T(X^*)$ or $(I-T)(X^*)$ contains a subspace that is isomorphic to $X^*$ and complemented in $X^*$. Moreover, we prove that $\ell^p(X^*)$, $1\leq p \leq \infty$ is primary.

Dimension dependence of factorization problems: bi-parameter Hardy spaces

Given $1 \leq p,q < \infty$ and $n\in\mathbb{N}_0$, let $H_n^p(H_n^q)$ denote the canonical finite-dimensional bi-parameter dyadic Hardy space. Let $(V_n : n\in\mathbb{N}_0)$ denote either $\bigl(H_n^p(H_n^q) : n\in\mathbb{N}_0\bigr)$ or $\bigl( (H_n^p(H_n^q))^* : n\in\mathbb{N}_0\bigr)$. We show that the identity operator on $V_n$ factors through any operator $T : V_N\to V_N$ which has large diagonal with respect to the Haar system, where $N$ depends \emph{linearly} on $n$.

Dimension dependence of factorization problems: Hardy spaces and $SL_n^\infty$

Given $1 \leq p < \infty$, let $W_n$ denote the finite-dimensional dyadic Hardy space $H_n^p$, its dual or $SL_n^\infty$. We prove the following quantitative result: The identity operator on $W_n$ factors through any operator $T : W_N\to W_N$ which has large diagonal with respect to the Haar system, where $N$ depends \emph{linearly} on $n$.

Direct sums of finite dimensional $SL^\infty_n$ spaces

$SL^\infty$ denotes the space of functions whose square function is in $L^\infty$, and the subspaces $SL^\infty_n$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, are the finite dimensional building blocks of $SL^\infty$. We show that the identity operator $I_{SL^\infty_n}$ on $SL^\infty_n$ well factors through operators $T : SL^\infty_N\to SL^\infty_N$ having large diagonal with respect to the standard Haar system. Moreover, we prove that $I_{SL^\infty_n}$ well factors either through any given operator $T : SL^\infty_N\to SL^\infty_N$, or through $I_{SL^\infty_N}-T$. Let $X^{(r)}$ denote the direct sum $\bigl(\sum_{n\in\mathbb{N}_0} SL^\infty_n\bigr)_r$, where $1\leq r \leq \infty$. Using Bourgain's localization method, we obtain from the finite dimensional factorization result that for each $1\leq r\leq \infty$, the identity operator $I_{X^{(r)}}$ on $X^{(r)}$ factors either through any given operator $T : X^{(r)}\to X^{(r)}$, or through $I_{X^{(r)}} - T$. Consequently, the spaces $\bigl(\sum_{n\in\mathbb{N}_0} SL^\infty_n\bigr)_r$, $1\leq r\leq \infty$, are all primary.

Factorization in $SL^\infty$

We show that the non-separable Banach space $SL^\infty$ is primary. This is achieved by directly solving the infinite dimensional factorization problem in $SL^\infty$. In particular, we bypass Bourgain's localization method.

Factorization in mixed norm Hardy and BMO spaces

Let $1\leq p,q < \infty$ and $1\leq r \leq \infty$. We show that the direct sum of mixed norm Hardy spaces $\big(\sum_n H^p_n(H^q_n)\big)_r$ and the sum of their dual spaces $\big(\sum_n H^p_n(H^q_n)^*\big)_r$ are both primary. We do so by using Bourgain's localization method and solving the finite dimensional factorization problem. In particular, we obtain that the spaces $\big(\sum_{n\in \mathbb N} H_n^1(H_n^s)\big)_r$, $\big(\sum_{n\in \mathbb N} H_n^s(H_n^1)\big)_r$, as well as $\big(\sum_{n\in \mathbb N} BMO_n(H_n^s)\big)_r$ and $\big(\sum_{n\in \mathbb N} H^s_n(BMO_n)\big)_r$, $1 < s < \infty$, $1\leq r \leq \infty$, are all primary.

Factorization of the identity through operators with large diagonal

Given a Banach space~$X$ with an unconditional basis, we consider the following question: does the identity on~$X$ factor through every operator on~$X$ with large diagonal relative to the unconditional basis? We show that on Gowers' unconditional Banach space, there exists an operator for which the answer to the question is negative. By contrast, for any operator on the mixed-norm Hardy spaces $H^p(H^q)$, where $1 \leq p,q < \infty$, with the bi-parameter Haar system, this problem always has a positive solution. The spaces $L^p, 1 < p < \infty$, were treated first by Andrew~[{\em Studia Math.}~1979].

Estimating averages of order statistics of bivariate functions

We prove uniform estimates for the expected value of averages of order statistics of bivariate functions in terms of their largest values by a direct analysis. As an application, uniform estimates for the expected value of averages of order statistics of sequences of independent random variables in terms of Orlicz norms are obtained. In the case where the bivariate functions are matrices, we provide a "minimal" probability space which allows us to $C$-embed certain Orlicz spaces $\ell_M^n$ into $\ell_1^{cn^3}$, $c,C>0$ being absolute constants.

Localization and projections on bi-parameter BMO

We prove that for any operator $T$ on bi--parameter BMO the identity factors through $T$ or $I - T$. Bourgain's localization method provides the conceptual framework of our proof. It consists in replacing the factorization problem on the non--separable bi--parameter BMO by its localized, finite dimensional counterpart. We solve the resulting finite dimensional factorization problems by exploiting the geometry and combinatorics of colored dyadic rectangles.

Adaptive deterministic dyadic grids on spaces of homogeneous type

In the context of spaces of homogeneous type, we develop a method to deterministically construct dyadic grids, specifically adapted to a given combinatorial situation. This method is used to estimate vector-valued operators rearranging martingale difference sequences such as the Haar system.

The One-Third-Trick and Shift Operators

In this paper we obtain a representation as martingale transform operators for the rearrangement and shift operators introduced by T. Figiel. The martingale transforms and the underlying sigma algebras are obtained explicitly by combinatorial means. The known norm estimates for those operators are a direct consequence of our representation.
