On smallest synchronizing terms over constant alphabets

We show a subexponential lower bound on the reset threshold of synchronizing deterministic finite tree automata (DTA) over alphabets of just two symbols. This significantly improves the previous one, which was quadratic in the number of states. Our result also narrows the gap towards the lower bound for DTA over alphabets that grow linearly with the number of states, as well as the best known upper bound, both of which are currently exponential.

Global One-Counter Tree Automata

We introduce global one-counter tree automata (GOCTA) which deviate from usual counter tree automata by working on only one counter which is passed through the tree in lexicographical order, rather than duplicating the counter at every branching position. We compare the capabilities of GOCTA to those of counter tree automata and obtain that their classes of recognizable tree languages are incomparable. Moreover, we show that the emptiness problem of GOCTA is undecidable while, in stark contrast, their membership problem is in P.

Constituency Parsing as an Instance of the M-monoid Parsing Problem

We consider the constituent parsing problem which states: given a final state normalized constituent tree automaton (CTA) and a string, compute the set of all constituent trees that are inductively recognized by the CTA and yield the string. We show that this problem is an instance of the M-monoid parsing problem. Moreover, we show that we can employ the generic M-monoid parsing algorithm to solve the constituency parsing problem for a meaningful class of CTA.

Supertagging-based Parsing with Linear Context-free Rewriting Systems

We present the first supertagging-based parser for LCFRS. It utilizes neural classifiers and tremendously outperforms previous LCFRS-based parsers in both accuracy and parsing speed. Moreover, our results keep up with the best (general) discontinuous parsers, particularly the scores for discontinuous constitutents are excellent. The heart of our approach is an efficient lexicalization procedure which induces a lexical LCFRS from any discontinuous treebank. It is an adaptation of previous work by Mörbitz and Ruprecht (2020). We also describe a modification to usual chart-based LCFRS parsing that accounts for supertagging and introduce a procedure for the transformation of lexical LCFRS derivations into equivalent parse trees of the original treebank. Our approach is implemented and evaluated on the English Discontinuous Penn Treebank and the German corpora NeGra and Tiger.

Weighted Parsing for Grammar-Based Language Models over Multioperator Monoids

We develop a general framework for weighted parsing which is built on top of grammar-based language models and employs multioperator monoids as weight algebras. It generalizes previous work in that area (semiring parsing, weighted deductive parsing) and also covers applications outside the classical scope of parsing, e.g., algebraic dynamic programming. We show an algorithm for weighted parsing and, for a large class of weighted grammar-based language models, we prove formally that it terminates and is correct.
