On the Galois group over Q of a truncated binomial expansion

For positive integers $n$, the truncated binomial expansions of $(1+x)^n$ which consist of all the terms of degree $\le r$ where $1 \le r \le n-2$ appear always to be irreducible. For fixed $r$ and $n$ sufficiently large, this is known to be the case. We show here that for a fixed positive integer $r \ne 6$ and $n$ sufficiently large, the Galois group of such a polynomial over the rationals is the symmetric group $S_{r}$. For $r = 6$, we show the number of exceptional $n \le N$ for which the Galois group of this polynomial is not $S_r$ is at most $O(\log N)$.

Characters of Independent Stanley Sequences

Odlyzko and Stanley introduced a greedy algorithm for constructing infinite sequences with no 3-term arithmetic progressions when beginning with a finite set with no 3-term arithmetic progressions. The sequences constructed from this procedure are known as Stanley sequences and appear to have two distinct growth rates which dictate whether the sequences are structured or chaotic. A large subclass of sequences of the former type is independent sequences, which have a self-similar structure. An attribute of interest for independent sequences is the character. In this paper, building on recent progress, we prove that every nonnegative integer $λ\not\in\{1,3,5,9,11,15\}$ is attainable as the character of an independent Stanley sequence, thus resolving a conjecture of Rolnick.

Congruences Among Power Series Coefficients of Modular Forms

Many authors have investigated the congruence relations amongst the coefficients of power series expansions of modular forms $f$ in modular functions $t$. In a recent paper, R. Osburn and B. Sahu examine several power series expansions and prove that the coefficients exhibit congruence relations similar to the congruences satisfied by the Apéry numbers associated with the irrationality of $ζ(3)$. We show that many of the examples of Osburn and Sahu are members of infinite families.

Congruences for Ramanujan's f and ω functions via generalized Borcherds products

Bruinier and Ono recently developed the theory of generalized Borcherds products, which uses coefficients of certain Maass forms as exponents in infinite product expansions of meromorphic modular forms. Using this, one can use classical results on congruences of modular forms to obtain congruences for Maass forms. In this note we work out the example of Ramanujan's mock theta functions f and ω in detail.
