IMProofBench: Benchmarking AI on Research-Level Mathematical Proof Generation

As the mathematical capabilities of large language models (LLMs) improve, it becomes increasingly important to evaluate their performance on research-level tasks at the frontier of mathematical knowledge. However, existing benchmarks are limited, as they focus solely on final-answer questions or high-school competition problems. To address this gap, we introduce IMProofBench, a private benchmark consisting of 77 peer-reviewed problems developed by expert mathematicians. Each problem requires a detailed proof and is paired with subproblems that have final answers, supporting both an evaluation by human experts and a large-scale quantitative analysis through automated grading. Furthermore, unlike prior benchmarks, the evaluation setup simulates a realistic research environment: models operate in an agentic framework with tools like web search for literature review and mathematical software such as SageMath. Our results show that current LLMs can already solve a significant percentage of research-level questions. IMProofBench will continue to evolve as a dynamic benchmark in collaboration with the mathematical community, ensuring its relevance for evaluating the next generation of LLMs.

Virtual Jeffrey--Kirwan localisation

We express integrals over virtual cycles of GIT quotients $X/\!\!/G$ in terms of integrals over virtual cycles of fixed loci $X^T$. The results hold for both perfect obstruction theories and $(-2)$-shifted symplectic structures, in cohomology and in $K$-theory, and for noncompact Deligne-Mumford stacks acted on by a reductive group with compact quotient.

Counting sheaves on Calabi-Yau 4-folds, I

Borisov-Joyce constructed a real virtual cycle on compact moduli spaces of stable sheaves on Calabi-Yau 4-folds, using derived differential geometry. We construct an algebraic virtual cycle. A key step is a localisation of Edidin-Graham's square root Euler class for $SO(r,\mathbb C)$ bundles to the zero locus of an isotropic section, or to the support of an isotropic cone. We prove a torus localisation formula, making the invariants computable and extending them to the noncompact case when the fixed locus is compact. We give a $K$-theoretic refinement by defining $K$-theoretic square root Euler classes and their localised versions. In a sequel we prove our invariants reproduce those of Borisov-Joyce.

Equivariant K-theory and refined Vafa-Witten invariants

In [MT2] the Vafa-Witten theory of complex projective surfaces is lifted to oriented $\mathbb C^*$-equivariant cohomology theories. Here we study the K-theoretic refinement. It gives rational functions in $t^{1/2}$ invariant under $t^{1/2}\leftrightarrow t^{-1/2}$ which specialise to numerical Vafa-Witten invariants at $t=1$. On the "instanton branch" the invariants give the virtual $χ_{-t}^{}$-genus refinement of Göttsche-Kool. Applying modularity to their calculations gives predictions for the contribution of the "monopole branch". We calculate some cases and find perfect agreement. We also do calculations on K3 surfaces, finding Jacobi forms refining the usual modular forms, proving a conjecture of Göttsche-Kool. We determine the K-theoretic virtual classes of degeneracy loci using Eagon-Northcott complexes, and show they calculate refined Vafa-Witten invariants. Using this Laarakker [Laa] proves universality results for the invariants.

Refined sheaf counting on local K3 surfaces

We compute all refined sheaf counting invariants -- Vafa-Witten, reduced DT, stable pairs and Gopakumar-Vafa -- for all classes on local $K3$ surfaces. Along the way we develop rank 0 Vafa-Witten theory on $K3$ surfaces. An important feature of the calculation is that the ``instanton contribution" -- of sheaves supported scheme theoretically on $S$ -- to any of the invariants depends only on the square of the class, not its divisibility.

Complex Kuranishi structures and counting sheaves on Calabi-Yau 4-folds, II

We develop a theory of complex Kuranishi structures on projective schemes. These are sufficiently rigid to be equivalent to weak perfect obstruction theories, but sufficiently flexible to admit global complex Kuranishi charts. We apply the theory to projective moduli spaces M of stable sheaves on Calabi-Yau 4-folds. Using real derived differential geometry, Borisov-Joyce produced a virtual homology cycle on M. In the prequel to this paper we constructed an algebraic virtual cycle on M. We prove the cycles coincide in homology after inverting 2 in the coefficients. And when Borisov-Joyce's real virtual dimension is odd, their virtual cycle is 2-torsion.

Quantum Lefschetz without curves

Given one quasi-smooth derived space cut out of another by a section of a 2-term complex of bundles, we give two formulae for its virtual cycle. They are modelled on the the $p$-fields construction of Chang-Li and the Quantum Lefschetz principle, and recover these when applied to moduli spaces of (stable or quasi-) maps. When the complex is a single bundle we recover results of Kim-Kresch-Pantev.

Rank $r$ DT theory from rank $0$

Fix a Calabi-Yau 3-fold $X$ satisfying the Bogomolov-Gieseker conjecture of Bayer-Macrì-Toda, such as the quintic 3-fold. We express Joyce's generalised DT invariants counting Gieseker semistable sheaves of any rank $r\ge1$ on $X$ in terms of those counting sheaves of rank 0 and pure dimension 2. The basic technique is to reduce the ranks of sheaves by replacing them by the cokernels of their Mochizuki/Joyce-Song pairs and then use wall crossing to handle their stability.

Curve counting and S-duality

We work on a projective threefold $X$ which satisfies the Bogomolov-Gieseker conjecture of Bayer-Macrì-Toda, such as $\mathbb P^3$ or the quintic threefold. We prove certain moduli spaces of 2-dimensional torsion sheaves on $X$ are smooth bundles over Hilbert schemes of ideal sheaves of curves and points in $X$. When $X$ is Calabi-Yau this gives a simple wall crossing formula expressing curve counts (and so ultimately Gromov-Witten invariants) in terms of counts of D4-D2-D0 branes. These latter invariants are predicted to have modular properties which we discuss from the point of view of S-duality and Noether-Lefschetz theory.

Rank $r$ DT theory from rank $1$

Fix a Calabi-Yau 3-fold $X$ satisfying the Bogomolov-Gieseker conjecture of Bayer-Macrì-Toda, such as the quintic 3-fold. We express Joyce's generalised DT invariants counting Gieseker semistable sheaves of any rank $r$ on $X$ in terms of those counting sheaves of rank 1. By the MNOP conjecture they are therefore determined by the Gromov-Witten invariants of $X$.

A K-theoretic Fulton class

Fulton defined classes in the Chow group of a quasi-projective scheme $M$ which reduce to its Chern classes when $M$ is smooth. When $M$ has a perfect obstruction theory, Siebert gave a formula for its virtual cycle in terms of its total Fulton class. We describe K-theory classes on $M$ which reduce to the exterior algebra of differential forms when $M$ is smooth. When $M$ has a perfect obstruction theory, we give a formula for its K-theoretic virtual structure sheaf in terms of these classes.

An application of wall-crossing to Noether-Lefschetz loci

Consider a smooth projective 3-fold $X$ satisfying the Bogomolov-Gieseker conjecture of Bayer-Macrì-Toda (such as $\mathbb P^3$, the quintic threefold or an abelian threefold). Let $L$ be a line bundle supported on a very positive surface in $X$. If $c_1(L)$ is a primitive cohomology class then we show it has very negative square.

Degeneracy loci, virtual cycles and nested Hilbert schemes II

We express nested Hilbert schemes of points and curves on a smooth projective surface as "virtual resolutions" of degeneracy loci of maps of vector bundles on smooth ambient spaces. We show how to modify the resulting obstruction theories to produce the virtual cycles of Vafa-Witten theory and other sheaf-counting problems. The result is an effective way of calculating invariants (VW, SW, local PT and local DT) via Thom-Porteous-like Chern class formulae.

Degeneracy loci, virtual cycles and nested Hilbert schemes I

Given a map of vector bundles on a smooth variety, consider the deepest degeneracy locus where its rank is smallest. We show it carries a natural perfect obstruction theory whose virtual cycle can be calculated by the Thom-Porteous formula. We show nested Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces can be expressed as degeneracy loci. We show how to modify the resulting obstruction theories to recover the virtual cycles of Vafa-Witten and reduced local DT theories. The result computes some Vafa-Witten invariants in terms of Carlsson-Okounkov operators. This proves and extends a conjecture of Gholampour-Sheshmani-Yau and generalises a vanishing result of Carlsson-Okounkov.

Sheaf counting on local K3 surfaces

There are two natural ways to count stable pairs or Joyce-Song pairs on $X=\mathrm{K3}\times\mathbb C$; one via weighted Euler characteristic and the other by virtual localisation of the reduced virtual class. Since $X$ is noncompact these need not be the same. We show their generating series are related by an exponential. As applications we prove two conjectures of Toda, and a conjecture of Tanaka-Thomas defining Vafa-Witten invariants in the semistable case.

Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surfaces I: stable case

On a polarised surface, solutions of the Vafa-Witten equations correspond to certain polystable Higgs pairs. When stability and semistability coincide, the moduli space admits a symmetric obstruction theory and a $\mathbb C^*$ action with compact fixed locus. Applying virtual localisation we define invariants constant under deformations. When the vanishing theorem of Vafa-Witten holds, the result is the (signed) Euler characteristic of the moduli space of instantons. In general there are other, rational, contributions. Calculations of these on surfaces with positive canonical bundle recover the first terms of modular forms predicted by Vafa and Witten.

Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surfaces II: semistable case

We propose a definition of Vafa-Witten invariants counting semistable Higgs pairs on a polarised surface. We use virtual localisation applied to Mochizuki/Joyce-Song pairs. For $K_S\le0$ we expect our definition coincides with an alternative definition using weighted Euler characteristics. We prove this for deg $K_S<0$ here, and it is proved for $S$ a K3 surface in \cite{MT}. For K3 surfaces we calculate the invariants in terms of modular forms which generalise and prove conjectures of Vafa and Witten.

Quintic threefolds and Fano elevenfolds

The derived category of coherent sheaves on a general quintic threefold is a central object in mirror symmetry. We show that it can be embedded into the derived category of a certain Fano elevenfold. Our proof also generates related examples in different dimensions.
