Massive scalar's self-mass from gravitons in de Sitter

We compute the fully renormalized one-graviton-loop contribution to the self-mass of a massive scalar field in de Sitter space. The computation is performed using dimensional regularization and the divergences are absorbed by BPHZ counterterms. This self-mass can be used to study one-loop quantum-gravitational corrections to the dynamics of massive spectator scalars in inflation.

Cancellation of one-parameter graviton gauge dependence in the effective scalar field equation in de Sitter

We investigate gauge dependence of one-graviton-loop corrections to the effective field equation of the massless, minimally coupled scalar in de Sitter, obtained by including source and observer corrections to the effective self-mass correcting the equation. Using the $Δα$ variation of the de Sitter-breaking graviton propagator in a one-parameter family of gauges, we compute the gauge-dependent contributions to the effective self-mass of a massless minimally coupled scalar mediating interactions between heavy scalars. We show that gauge dependence cancels provided the contributions from all diagram classes are collected, including one-loop corrections to external mode functions, which play a qualitatively new role relative to flat space. The resulting cancellation supports the construction of graviton gauge-independent cosmological quantum-gravitational observables from quantum-corrected effective equations.

Visions in Quantum Gravity

To deepen our understanding of Quantum Gravity and its connections with black holes and cosmology, building a common language and exchanging ideas across different approaches is crucial. The Nordita Program "Quantum Gravity: from gravitational effective field theories to ultraviolet complete approaches" created a platform for extensive discussions, aimed at pinpointing both common grounds and sources of disagreements, with the hope of generating ideas and driving progress in the field. This contribution summarizes the twelve topical discussions held during the program and collects individual thoughts of speakers and panelists on the future of the field in light of these discussions.

Strange Work in Strange Places: Quantum Field Theory in Curved Space

Astronomers seem to be observing the fossilized remnants of quantum gravitational processes which took place during the epoch of {\it primordial inflation} that is conjectured to have occurred during the first $10^{-32}$ seconds of cosmic history. We give a non-technical description of what causes these processes and how they become preserved to survive to the current epoch. We also discuss some of the secondary effects which should result.

Field equations and cosmology for a class of nonlocal metric models of MOND

We consider a class of nonlocal, pure-metric modified gravity models which were developed to reproduce the Tully-Fisher relation without dark matter and without changing the amount of weak lensing predicted by general relativity. Previous work gave only the weak field limiting form of the field equations specialized to a static and spherically symmetric geometry. Here we derive the full field equations and specialize them to a homogeneous, isotropic and spatially flat geometry. We also discuss the problem of fitting the free function to reproduce the expansion history. Results are derived for models in which the MOND acceleration a_0 ~ 1.2 x 10^{-10} m/s^{2} is a fundamental constant and for the more phenomenologically interesting case in which the MOND acceleration changes with the cosmological expansion rate.

Linearized Weyl-Weyl Correlator in a de Sitter Breaking Gauge

We use a de Sitter breaking graviton propagator to compute the tree order correlator between noncoincident Weyl tensors on a locally de Sitter background. An explicit, and very simple result is obtained, for any spacetime dimension D, in terms of a de Sitter invariant length function and the tensor basis constructed from the metric and derivatives of this length function. Our answer does not agree with the one derived previously by Kouris, but that result must be incorrect because it not transverse and lacks some of the algebraic symmetries of the Weyl tensor. Taking the coincidence limit of our result (with dimensional regularization) and contracting the indices gives the expectation value of the square of the Weyl tensor at lowest order. We propose the next order computation of this as a true test of de Sitter invariance in quantum gravity.

Nonlocal metric formulations of MOND with sufficient lensing

We demonstrate how to construct purely metric modifications of gravity which agree with general relativity in the weak field regime appropriate to the solar system, but which possess an ultra-weak field regime when the gravitational acceleration becomes comparable to $a_0 \sim 10^{-10} {\rm m/s}^2$. In this ultra-weak field regime, the models reproduce the MOND force without dark matter and also give enough gravitational lensing to be consistent with existing data. Our models are nonlocal and might conceivably derive from quantum corrections to the effective field equations.

Two loop stress-energy tensor for inflationary scalar electrodynamics

We calculate the expectation value of the coincident product of two field strength tensors at two loop order in scalar electrodynamics on de Sitter background. The result agrees with the stochastic formulation which we have developed in a companion paper [2] for the nonperturbative resummation of leading logarithms of the scale factor. When combined with a previous computation of scalar bilinears [1], our current result also gives the two loop stress-energy tensor for inflationary scalar electrodynamics. This shows a secular decrease in the vacuum energy which derives from the vacuum polarization induced by the inflationary production of charged scalars.

Dynamics of super-horizon photons during inflation with vacuum polarization

We study asymptotic dynamics of photons propagating in the polarized vacuum of a locally de Sitter Universe. The origin of the vacuum polarization is fluctuations of a massless, minimally coupled, scalar, which we model by the one-loop vacuum polarization tensor of scalar electrodynamics. We show that late time dynamics of the electric field on superhorizon scales approaches that of an Airy oscillator. The magentic field amplitude, on the other hand, asymptotically approaches a nonvanishing constant (plus an exponentially small oscillatory component), which is suppressed with respect to the initial (vacuum) amplitude. This implies that the asymptotic photon dynamics is more intricate than that of a massive photon obeying the local Proca equation.
