Electronic Properties of Carbon Nanostructures

The carbon nanostructures are perspective materials for the future applications. This has two reasons: first, the hexagonal atomic structure which enables a high molecular variability by placing different kinds of the defects and second, good electronic properties which can be modified for the purpose of the concrete applications with the help of the defects and of the chemical ingredients. A lot of kinds of the nanostructures was investigated. Here, the properties of less common forms will be examined - the graphitic nanocone and graphitic wormhole.

Green Function Approach for Calculation of the Local Density of States in the Graphitic Nanocone

Graphene and other nanostructures belong to the center of interest of today's physics research. The local density of states of the graphitic nanocone influenced by the spin-orbit interaction was calculated. Numerical calculations and the Green function approach were used to solve this problem. It was proven in the second case that the second order pproximation is not sufficient for this purpose.

Emergence of F(R) gravity-analogue due to defects in graphene

We show that the defects of graphene, which lead to the non-equality between positive curvature of fermions with anti-parallel spins and negative curvature of fermions with parallel spins, imply an emergence of F(R) gravity. By increasing the number of atoms at each defect, the order of scalar curvature increases and the shape of F(R) gravity changes. This gravity has a direct relation with energy-momentum tensor and leads to motion of electrons in a special path and hence producing superconductivity. Also, for some special angles, parallel spins become close to each other and repel to each other. In that condition, the shape of F(R) gravity changes and electrons can't continue to move in an initial path and return. Consequently, superconductivity disappears and one new conductivity appears in opposite direction.

Biasing the ferronematic - a new way to detect weak magnetic field

Magnetic properties of a ferronematic, i.e., nematic liquid crystal doped with magnetic nanoparticles in low volume concentration are studied, with the focus on the ac magnetic susceptibility. A weak dc bias magnetic field (units of Oe) applied to the ferronematic in its isotropic phase increases the ac magnetic susceptibility considerably. Passage of the isotropic-to-nematic phase transition resets this enhancement irreversibly (unless the dc bias field is applied again in the isotropic phase). These experimental findings pave a way to application possibilities, such as low magnetic field sensors, or basic logical elements for information storage.

Cosmological expansion and contraction from Pauli exclusion principle in $M0$-branes

We show that the Pauli exclusion principle in a system of $M0$-branes can give rise to the expansion and contraction of the universe which is located on an $M3$-brane. We start with a system of $M0$-branes with high symmetry, which join mutually and form pairs of $M1$-anti-$M1$-branes. The resulting symmetry breaking creates gauge fields that live on the $M1$-branes and play the role of graviton tensor modes, which induce an attractive force between the $M1$ and anti-$M1$ branes. Consequently, the gauge fields that live on the $M1$-branes, and the scalar fields which are attached symmetrically to all parts of these branes, decay to fermions that attach anti-symmetrically to the upper and lower parts of the branes, and hence the Pauli exclusion principle emerges. By closing $M1$-branes mutually, the curvatures produced by parallel spins will be different from the curvatures produced by anti-parallel spins, and this leads to an inequality between the number of degrees of freedom on the boundary surface and the number of degrees of freedom in the bulk region. This behavior is inherited in the $M3$-brane on which the universe is located, and hence this leads to the emergence of the universe expansion and contraction. In this sense, the Pauli exclusion principle rules the cosmic dynamics.

Using String Invariants for Prediction Searching for Optimal Parameters

We have developed a novel prediction method based on string invariants. The method does not require learning but a small set of parameters must be set to achieve optimal performance. We have implemented an evolutionary algorithm for the parametric optimization. We have tested the performance of the method on artificial and real world data and compared the performance to statistical methods and to a number of artificial intelligence methods. We have used data and the results of a prediction competition as a benchmark. The results show that the method performs well in single step prediction but the methods performance for multiple step prediction needs to be improved. The method works well for a wide range of parameters.

Electronic states of zigzag graphene nanoribbons with edges reconstructed with topological defects

The energy spectrum and electronic density of states (DOS) of zigzag graphene nanoribbons with edges reconstructed with topological defects are investigated within the tight-binding method. In case of the Stone-Wales zz (57) edge the low-energy spectrum is markedly changed in comparison to the pristine zz edge. We found that the electronic DOS at the Fermi level is different from zero at any width of graphene nanoribbons. In contrast, for ribbons with heptagons only at one side and pentagons at another one the energy gap at the Fermi level is open and the DOS is equal to zero. The reason is the influence of uncompensated topological charges on the localized edge states, which are topological in nature. This behavior is similar to that found for the structured external electric potentials along the edges.

The string prediction models as an invariants of time series in forex market

In this paper we apply a new approach of the string theory to the real financial market. It is direct extension and application of the work [1] into prediction of prices. The models are constructed with an idea of prediction models based on the string invariants (PMBSI). The performance of PMBSI is compared to support vector machines (SVM) and artificial neural networks (ANN) on an artificial and a financial time series. Brief overview of the results and analysis is given. The first model is based on the correlation function as invariant and the second one is an application based on the deviations from the closed string/pattern form (PMBCS). We found the difference between these two approaches. The first model cannot predict the behavior of the forex market with good efficiency in comparison with the second one which is, in addition, able to make relevant profit per year.

Electronic structure of spheroidal fullerenes

Graphite is an example of a layered material that can be bent to form fullerenes which promise important applications in electronic nanodevices. The spheroidal geometry of a slightly elliptically deformed sphere was used as a possible approach to fullerenes. We assumed that for a small deformation the eccentricity of the spheroid is much more smaller then one. We are interested in the elliptically deformed fullerenes C70 as well as in C60 and its spherical generalizations like big C240 and C540 molecules. In the next study the expanded field-theory model was proposed to study the electronic states near the Fermi energy in spheroidal fullerenes. The low energy electronic wave functions obey a two-dimensional Dirac equation on a spheroid with two kinds of gauge fluxes taken into account. We shown exactly how a small deformation of spherical fullerenes provokes an appearance of fine structure in the electronic energy spectrum as compared to the spherical case. The effect of a weak uniform magnetic field on the electronic structure of slightly deformed fullerene molecules was also studied. We shown that the fine structure of the electronic energy spectrum is very sensitive to the orientation of the magnetic field. We found that the magnetic field pointed in the x direction does not influence the first electronic level whereas it causes a splitting of the second energy level.
