Leptonic anomalous magnetic moments in $ν$SMEFT

We investigate contributions to the anomalous magnetic moments of charged leptons in the neutrino-extended Standard Model Effective Field Theory ($ν$SMEFT). We discuss how $ν$SMEFT operators can contribute to a lepton's magnetic moment at one- and two-loop order. We show that only one operator can account for existing electronic and muonic discrepancies, assuming new physics appears above $1$ TeV. In particular, we find that a right-handed charged current in combination with minimal sterile-active mixing can explain the discrepancy for sterile neutrino masses of $\mathcal O(100)$ GeV while avoiding direct and indirect constraints. We discuss how searches for sterile neutrino production at the (HL-)LHC, measurements of $h\rightarrow μ^+ μ^-$ and searches for $h\rightarrow e^+ e^-$, neutrinoless double beta decay experiments, and improved unitarity tests of the CKM matrix can further probe the relevant parameter space.

Probing the Weinberg Operator at Colliders

Motivated by searches for $0νββ$ decay in nuclear experiments and collider probes of lepton number violation at dimension $d\geq7$, we investigate the sensitivity to the $d=5$ Weinberg operator using the non-resonant signature $pp\to \ell^\pm \ell'^{\pm} j j$ at the LHC. We develop a prescription for the operator that is applicable in collisions and decays, and focus on the $\ell\ell'=μμ$ channel, which is beyond the reach of nuclear decays. For a Wilson coefficient $C^{μμ}_5=1$, scales as heavy as $Λ\sim 8.3~(11)$~TeV can be probed with $\mathcal{L}=300~{\rm fb}^{-1}~(3~{\rm ab}^{-1})$. This translates to an effective $μμ$ Majorana mass of $\vert m_{μμ}\vert\sim7.3~(5.4)$~GeV, and establishes a road map for testing the Weinberg operator at accelerators.

Majorana Neutrinos in Same-Sign $W^\pm W^\pm$ Scattering at the LHC: Breaking the TeV Barrier

We revisit the sensitivity to non-resonant, heavy Majorana neutrinos $N$ in same-sign $W^\pm W^\pm$ scattering at the $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV LHC and its high-luminosity upgrade. As a benchmark scenario, we work in the context of the Phenomenological Type I Seesaw model, relying on a simulation up to next-to-leading order in QCD with parton shower matching. After extensively studying the phenomenology of the $pp\toμ^\pmμ^\pm j j$ process at the amplitude and differential levels, we design a simple collider analysis with remarkable signal-background separation power. At 95\% confidence level we find that the squared muon-heavy neutrino mixing element $\vert V_{μN} \vert^{2}$ can be probed down to about $0.06-0.3 ~ (0.03-0.1)$ for $m_N = 1-10~{\rm TeV}$ with $\mathcal{L}=300$ fb$^{-1}~(3$ ab$^{-1})$. For heavier masses of $m_N = 20~{\rm TeV}$, we report sensitivity for $\vert V_{μN} \vert^{2}\gtrsim 0.5~(0.3)$. The $W^\pm W^\pm$ scattering channel can greatly extend the mass range covered by current LHC searches for heavy Majorana neutrinos and particularly adds invaluable sensitivity above a few hundred GeV. We comment on areas where the analysis can be improved as well as on the applicability to other tests of neutrino mass models.

A quantitative study on helicity inversion in Majorana neutrino decays at the LHC

We report an analytical and numerical investigation into the impact of helicity inversion in LHC processes that do not conserve lepton number $(L)$. As a case study, we focus on the production and decay of Majorana neutrinos $(N)$ through on- and off-shell $W$ bosons in the Phenomenological Type I Seesaw model. Using the Monte Carlo event generator \texttt{MadGraph5\_aMC@NLO} in conjunction with the \texttt{HeavyN} model libraries, we perform exact matrix element (ME) computations without the narrow width approximation. Despite helicity inversion appearing explicitly in MEs, we report the absence of helicity suppression of $L$-violating collider observables for $1\to4$ and $2\to4$ processes that are dominated by resonant $N$ production. We attribute this incongruity to the different scalings of 4-momenta and squared 4-momenta in MEs and squared MEs, with exact cancelations occurring in the latter when $N$ goes on-shell in the small-width limit. In off-shell regimes, total suppression / enhancement of $L$ violation can emerge. Implications for other neutrino mass models are discussed.

Proceedings of the second MadAnalysis 5 workshop on LHC recasting in Korea

We document the activities performed during the second MadAnalysis 5 workshop on LHC recasting, that was organised in KIAS (Seoul, Korea) on February 12-20, 2020. We detail the implementation of 12 new ATLAS and CMS searches in the MadAnalysis 5 Public Analysis Database, and the associated validation procedures. Those searches probe the production of extra gauge and scalar/pseudoscalar bosons, supersymmetry, seesaw models and deviations from the Standard Model in four-top production.

Anatomy of inclusive $t\overline{t}W$ production at hadron colliders

In LHC searches for new and rare phenomena the top-associated channel $pp \to t\overline{t}W^\pm +X$ is a challenging background that multilepton analyses must overcome. Motivated by sustained measurements of enhanced rates of same-sign and multi-lepton final states, we reexamine the importance of higher jet multiplicities in $pp \to t\overline{t}W^\pm +X$ that enter at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3α)$ and $\mathcal{O}(α_s^4α)$, i.e., that contribute at NLO and NNLO in QCD in inclusive $t\overline{t}W^\pm$ production. Using fixed-order computations, we estimate that a mixture of real and virtual corrections at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^4α)$ in well-defined regions of phase space can arguably increase the total $t\overline{t}W^\pm$ rate at NLO by at least $10\%-14\%$. However, by using non-unitary NLO multi-jet matching, we estimate that these same corrections are at most $10\%-12\%$, and at the same time exhibit the enhanced jet multiplicities that are slightly favored by data. This seeming incongruity suggests a need for the full NNLO result. We comment on implications for the $t\overline{t}Z$ process.

Vector boson fusion at multi-TeV muon colliders

High-energy lepton colliders with a centre-of-mass energy in the multi-TeV range are currently considered among the most challenging and far-reaching future accelerator projects. Studies performed so far have mostly focused on the reach for new phenomena in lepton-antilepton annihilation channels. In this work we observe that starting from collider energies of a few TeV, electroweak (EW) vector boson fusion/scattering (VBF) at lepton colliders becomes the dominant production mode for all Standard Model processes relevant to studying the EW sector. In many cases we find that this also holds for new physics. We quantify the size and the growth of VBF cross sections with collider energy for a number of SM and new physics processes. By considering luminosity scenarios achievable at a muon collider, we conclude that such a machine would effectively be a "high-luminosity weak boson collider," and subsequently offer a wide range of opportunities to precisely measure EW and Higgs coupling as well as to discover new particles.

Beyond the Standard Model in Vector Boson Scattering Signatures

The high-energy scattering of massive electroweak bosons, known as vector boson scattering (VBS), is a sensitive probe of new physics. VBS signatures will be thoroughly and systematically investigated at the LHC with the large data samples available and those that will be collected in the near future. Searches for deviations from Standard Model (SM) expectations in VBS facilitate tests of the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking (EWSB) mechanism. Current state-of-the-art tools and theory developments, together with the latest experimental results, and the studies foreseen for the near future are summarized. A review of the existing Beyond the SM (BSM) models that could be tested with such studies as well as data analysis strategies to understand the interplay between models and the effective field theory paradigm for interpreting experimental results are discussed. This document is a summary of the EU COST network "VBScan" workshop on the sensitivity of VBS processes for BSM frameworks that took place December 4-5, 2019 at the LIP facilities in Lisbon, Portugal. In this manuscript we outline the scope of the workshop, summarize the different contributions from theory and experiment, and discuss the relevant findings.

Automated Predictions from Polarized Matrix Elements

The anticipated experimental resolution and data cache of the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider will enable precision investigations of polarization in multiboson processes. This includes, for the first time, vector boson scattering. To facilitate such studies, we report the automation of polarized matrix element computations in the publicly available Monte Carlo tool suite, MadGraph5_aMC@NLO. This enables scattering and decay simulations involving helicity-polarized asymptotic or intermediate states, preserving both spin-correlation and off-shell effects. As demonstrations of the method, we investigate the leading order production and decay of polarized weak gauge bosons in the process $pp \to j j W^+_λW^-_{λ'}$, with helicity eigenstates $(λ,λ')$ defined in various reference frames. We consider the Standard Model at both $\mathcal{O}(α^4)$ and $\mathcal{O}(α^2 α_s^2)$ as well as a benchmark composite Higgs scenario. We report good agreement with polarization studies based on the On-Shell Projection (OSP) technique. Future capabilities are discussed.

Doubly Charged Higgs Boson Production at Hadron Colliders

We present a systematic comparison of doubly charged Higgs boson production mechanisms at hadron colliders in the context of the Type II Seesaw model, emphasizing the importance of higher-order corrections and subdominant channels. We consider the Drell-Yan channel at next-to-leading order in QCD, photon fusion at leading order, gluon fusion with resummation of threshold logarithms up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, and same-sign weak boson fusion at next-to-leading order in QCD. For Drell-Yan processes, we study the impact of a static jet veto at next-to-leading order matched to the resummation of jet veto scale logarithms at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. For the photon fusion channel, the dependence on modeling photon parton distribution functions is definitively assessed. To model vector boson fusion at next-to-leading order, we include all interfering topologies at $\mathcal{O}(α^4)$ and propose a method for introducing generator-level cuts within the MC@NLO formalism. Our results are obtained using a Monte Carlo tool chain linking the \textsc{FeynRules}, \textsc{NloCT} and \textsc{MadGraph5\_aMC@NLO} programs and have necessitated the development of new, publicly available, Universal FeynRules Output libraries that encode the interactions between the Type II Seesaw scalars and Standard Model particles. Libraries are compatible with both the normal and inverted ordering of Majorana neutrino masses.

Sleptons without Hadrons

Multilepton searches for electroweakino and slepton pair production at hadron colliders remain some of the best means to test weak-scale supersymmetry. Searches at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, however, are limited by large diboson and top quark pair backgrounds, despite the application of traditional, central jet vetoes. In this context, we report the impact of introducing dynamic jet vetoes in searches for colorless superpartners. As a representative scenario, we consider the Drell-Yan production of a pair of right-handed smuons decaying into a dimuon system accompanied with missing transverse energy. As an exploratory step, we consider several global and local measures of the leptonic and hadronic activity to construct the veto. In most all cases, we find that employing a dynamic jet veto improves the sensitivity, independently of the integrated luminosity. The inclusion of non-perturbative multiple particle interactions and next-to-leading order jet merging does not alter this picture. Directions for further improvements are discussed.

Heavy Neutrinos with Dynamic Jet Vetoes: Multilepton Searches at $\sqrt{s} = 14,~27,$ and $100$ TeV

Heavy neutrinos $(N)$ remain one of most promising explanations for the origin of neutrinos' tiny masses and large mixing angles. In light of broad advances in understanding and modeling of hadron collisions at large momentum transfer, we revisit the long-standard search strategy for heavy $N$ decaying to multiple charged leptons $(\ell)$, $pp \to N\ell X \to 3\ell νX$. For electroweak and TeV-scale $N$, we propose a qualitatively new collider analysis premised on a dynamic jet veto and discriminating, on an event-by-event basis, according to the relative amount of hadronic and leptonic activity. We report that the sensitivity to $N$ at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can be improved by roughly an order of magnitude over the collider's lifetime. At $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV with $\mathcal{L}=3~{\rm ab}^{-1}$, active-sterile mixing as small as $\vert V_{\ell N}\vert^2 = 10^{-2} ~(10^{-3})~[5\times10^{-4}]$ can be probed at $95\%$ CL for Dirac neutrinos masses $m_N \lesssim 1200~(300)~[200]$ GeV, well beyond present constraints for such heavy states. The improvement holds also for Majorana $N$, and is largely independent of whether charged lepton flavor is conserved or violated. The analysis, built almost entirely from inclusive, transverse observables, is designed to be robust across increasing collider energies, and hence serves as a basis for searches at future colliders: With $\mathcal{L}=15~{\rm ab}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=27$ TeV, one can probe mixing below $\vert V_{\ell N}\vert^2 = 10^{-2} ~(10^{-3})~[2\times10^{-4}]$ for $m_N \lesssim 3500~(700)~[200]$ GeV. At a hypothetical 100 TeV $pp$ collider with $\mathcal{L}=30~{\rm ab}^{-1}$, one can probe below $\vert V_{\ell N}\vert^2 = 9\times10^{-5}~(10^{-3})~[10^{-2}]$ for $m_N \lesssim 200$ GeV ($4$ TeV) [$15$ TeV]. We anticipate these results can be further improved with detector-specific tuning and application of machines learning techniques.

Safe Jet Vetoes

Central jet vetoes are powerful tools for reducing QCD background in measurements and searches for electroweak and colorless, new physics processes in hadron collisions. In this letter, we report the key findings of a new philosophy to designing searches for such phenomena at hadron colliders, one designed and centered around a dynamical jet veto instead a static veto applied independently of other selection criteria. Specifically, we investigate the theoretical and phenomenological consequences of setting the jet veto scale to the transverse momentum $(p_T)$ of the leading charged lepton $\ell$ in multi-lepton processes on an event-by-event basis. We consider the case of a TeV-scale heavy neutrino $N$ decaying to the trilepton final state and find the following: (i) Perturbative uncertainties associated with the veto greatly reduce due to tying the veto scale to the hard process scale. (ii) The signal efficiency for passing the veto jumps to $\gtrsim95\%$ and exhibits little-to-no dependence on the neutrino mass scale. (iii) Top quark and `fake' lepton rejection capabilities also improve compared to only vetoing heavy flavor-tagged jets above a fixed $p_T$. This results in an increased sensitivity to active-sterile neutrino mixing by approximately an order of magnitude over the LHC's lifetime. For a Dirac neutrino with mass $m_N = 150-1000$ GeV and the representative active-sterile mixing hypothesis $\vert V_{e4}\vert = \vert V_{τ4}\vert$ with $\vert V_{μ4}\vert=0$, we find that LHC experiments can probe $\vert V_{e4}\vert^2, \vert V_{τ4}\vert^2 \lesssim 6\times10^{-4} - 8\times10^{-3}$, surpassing the global upper limit for $m_N < 450$ GeV, with $\mathcal{L}=3$ ab$^{-1}$ of data at $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV. Due to the color structures of the heavy $N$ production mechanisms considered, we argue that our results hold broadly for other color-singlet processes.

Monojet Signatures from Heavy Colored Particles: Future Collider Sensitivities and Theoretical Uncertainties

In models with colored particle $\mathcal{Q}$ that can decay into a dark matter candidate $X$, the relevant collider process $pp\to \mathcal{Q}\bar{\mathcal{Q}}\rightarrow X\bar{X}+$jets gives rise to events with significant transverse momentum imbalance. When the masses of $\mathcal{Q}$ and $X$ are very close, the relevant signature becomes monojet-like, and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) search limits become much less constraining. In this paper, we study the current and anticipated experimental sensitivity to such particles at the High-Luminosity LHC at $\sqrt{s}=14\,\mathrm{TeV}$ with $\mathcal{L}=3\,\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data and the proposed High-Energy LHC at $\sqrt{s}=27\,\mathrm{TeV}$ with $\mathcal{L}=15\,\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data. We estimate the reach for various Lorentz and QCD color representations of $\mathcal{Q}$. Identifying the nature of $\mathcal{Q}$ is very important to understanding the physics behind the monojet signature. Therefore, we also study the dependence of the observables built from the $pp\to\mathcal{Q}\bar{\mathcal{Q}} + j $ process on $\mathcal{Q}$ itself. Using the state-of-the-art Monte Carlo suites MadGraph5_aMC@NLO+Pythia8 and Sherpa, we find that when these observables are calculated at NLO in QCD with parton shower matching and multijet merging, the residual theoretical uncertainties are comparable to differences observed when varying the quantum numbers of $\mathcal{Q}$ itself. We find, however, that the precision achievable with NNLO calculations, where available, can resolve this dilemma.

Lepton Number Violation: Seesaw Models and Their Collider Tests

The Majorana nature of neutrinos is strongly motivated from the theoretical and phenomenological point of view. A plethora of neutrino mass models, known collectively as Seesaw models, exist that could generate both a viable neutrino mass spectrum and mixing pattern. They can also lead to rich, new phenomenology, including lepton number non-conservation as well as new particles, that may be observable at collider experiments. It is therefore vital to search for such new phenomena and the mass scale associated with neutrino mass generation at high energy colliders. In this review, we consider a number of representative Seesaw scenarios as phenomenological benchmarks, including the characteristic Type I, II, and III Seesaw mechanisms, their extensions and hybridizations, as well as radiative constructions. We present new and updated predictions for analyses featuring lepton number violation and expected coverage in the theory parameter space at current and future colliders. We emphasize new production and decay channels, their phenomenological relevance and treatment across different facilities in $e^+e^-$, $e^-p$ and $pp$ collisions, as well as the available Monte Carlo tools available for studying Seesaw partners in collider environments.

Heavy neutrinos from gluon fusion

Heavy neutrinos, a key prediction of many standard model extensions, remain some of the most searched-for objects at collider experiments. In this context, we revisit the premise that the gluon fusion production mechanism, $gg \to Z^*/h^* \to Nν_\ell$, is phenomenologically irrelevant at the CERN LHC and report the impact of soft gluon corrections to the production cross section. We resum threshold logarithms up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy (N$^3$LL), thus capturing the dominant contributions to the inclusive cross section up to next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO). For $m_N > 150$ GeV and collider energies $\sqrt{s} = 7 - 100$ TeV, corrections to the Born rates span $+160$ to $+260\%$. At $\sqrt{s}$=14 TeV, the resummed channel is roughly equal in size to the widely-believed-to-be-dominant charged current Drell-Yan process and overtakes it outright at $\sqrt{s} \gtrsim 20-25$ TeV. Results are independent of the precise nature/mixing of $N$ and hold generically for other low-scale seesaws. Findings are also expected to hold for other exotic leptons and broken axial-vector currents, particularly as the $Z^*$ contribution identically reduces to that of a pseudoscalar.

Lepton Number Violation at Colliders from Kinematically Inaccessible Gauge Bosons

We reevaluate the necessity of $W_R$ gauge bosons being kinematically accessible to test the Left-Right Symmetric Model (LRSM) at hadron colliders. In the limit that $W_R$ are too heavy, resonant production of sub-TeV Majorana neutrinos $N$ can still proceed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) via the process $pp\rightarrow W_R^{\pm *}\rightarrow N \ell^\pm \to \ell^\pm \ell^\pm +nj $ if mediated by a far off-shell $W_R$. Traditional searches strategies are insensitive to this regime as they rely on momenta of final states scaling with TeV-scale $M_{W_R}$. For such situations, the process is actually kinematically and topologically identical to the direct production (DP) process $pp\rightarrow W_{\rm SM}^{\pm *} \rightarrow N \ell^\pm \rightarrow \ell^\pm \ell^\pm +nj$. In this context, we reinterpret $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV LHC constraints on DP rates for the minimal LRSM. For $m_N = 200-500$ GeV and right-left coupling ratio $κ_R = g_R/g_L$, we find $(M_{W_R} / κ_R) > {1.1-1.8}$ TeV at 95\% CLs. Expected sensitivities to DP at 14 (100) TeV are also recast: with $\mathcal{L}=1~(10)~\text{ab}^{-1}$, one can probe $(M_{W_R} / κ_R) < {7.9-8.9~(14-40)}$ TeV for $m_N = {100 - 700~(1200)}$ GeV. Findings in terms of gauge invariant dimension-six operators with heavy $N$ are also reported.
