Uniaxial-Stress-Induced Magnetic Transitions in the Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnet PdCrO2

Uniaxial stress is a promising method to tune magnetic frustration, allowing its effects to be studied in a precise way. In this work, uniaxial stress is applied to the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet PdCrO2. The Cr-Cr magnetic interaction is very sensitive to interatomic separation, so laboratory-achievable stress can induce substantial changes in magnetic structure. Results from three types of measurement are presented: X-ray diffraction, the stress-strain relationship, and neutron diffraction. The combined data show that the elastic moduli of PdCrO2 are strongly affected by stress-induced changes in magnetic structure. A new, first-order stress-induced magnetic transition is observed, at which the lattice constant shrinks by 0.21%. The lattice stiffens dramatically across this transition: the Young's modulus increases by about 80 GPa, and the Poisson ratio falls from about 1 to about 0.4. This stiffening indicates that the magnetic order "locks," that is, becomes insensitive to lattice strain. This locking might occur because the new stress-induced magnetic order nests the Fermi surface of the Pd sheets. Other frustrated magnets, including candidate spin liquids, may show similarly strong coupling between magnetic and elastic degrees of freedom.

Atypical Ferrimagnetism in Ni$_4$Nb$_2$O$_9$

Ferrimagnetism typically emerges from chemically distinct magnetic ions or the same element at two inequivalent crystallographic sites, rendering unequal moments. In contrast, Ni4Nb2O9 has been recently discovered to show a different mechanism, where identical Ni2 ions with the same ligand coordination develop unequal magnetic moments purely due to differences in local environments. Here, we investigate the microscopic origin of this emergent mechanism through a synergy of powder neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, and first principle based calculations. We demonstrate that the NiA and NiB sublattices, while sharing the same nominal valence, differ in their magnetic dimensionality NiA forms quasi one dimensional chains with enhanced p d hybridization and a reduced magnetic moment, whereas NiB retains a nearly two-dimensional geometry and a full S 1 moment. Our results underscore the pivotal role of spin dimensionality and local structural distortions in stabilizing ferrimagnetism in systems with electronically equivalent magnetic ions.

Heisenberg spins on an anisotropic triangular lattice: PdCrO2 under uniaxial stress

When Heisenberg spins interact antiferromagnetically on a triangular lattice and nearest-neighbor interactions dominate, the ground state is 120$^{\circ}$ antiferromagnetism. In this work, we probe the response of this state to lifting the triangular symmetry, through investigation of the triangular antiferromagnet PdCrO$_2$ under uniaxial stress by neutron diffraction and resistivity measurements. The periodicity of the magnetic order is found to change rapidly with applied stress; the rate of change indicates that the magnetic anisotropy is roughly forty times the stress-induced bond length anisotropy. At low stress, the incommensuration period becomes extremely long, on the order of 1000 lattice spacings; no locking of the magnetism to commensurate periodicity is detected. Separately, the magnetic structure is found to undergo a first-order transition at a compressive stress of $\sim$0.4 GPa, at which the interlayer ordering switches from a double- to a single-q structure.
