The Shear Viscosity in an Anisotropic Unitary Fermi Gas

We consider a system consisting of a strongly interacting, ultracold unitary Fermi gas under harmonic confinement. Our analysis suggests the possibility of experimentally studying, in this system, an anisotropic shear viscosity tensor driven by the anisotropy in the trapping potential. In particular, we suggest that this experimental setup could mimic some features of anisotropic geometries that have recently been studied for strongly coupled field theories which have a gravitational dual. Results using the AdS/CFT correspondence in these theories show that in systems with a background linear potential, certain viscosity components can be made much smaller than the entropy density, parametrically violating the bound proposed by Kovtun, Son and Starinets (KSS). This intuition, along with results from a Boltzmann analysis that we perform, suggests that a violation of the KSS bound can perhaps occur in the unitary Fermi gas system when it is subjected to a suitable anisotropic trapping potential which may be approximated to be linear in a suitable range of parameters. We give a concrete proposal for an experimental setup where an anisotropic shear viscosity tensor may arise. In such situations, it may also be possible to observe a reduction in the spin one component of the shear viscosity from its lowest value observed so far in ultracold Fermi gases. In extreme anisotropic situations, the reduction may be enough to reduce the shear viscosity to entropy ratio below the proposed KSS bound, although this regime is difficult to analyze in a theoretically controlled manner.

On the Supersymmetry of Bianchi attractors in Gauged supergravity

Bianchi attractors are near horizon geometries with homogeneous symmetries in the spatial directions. We construct supersymmetric Bianchi attractors in $\mathcal{N}=2, d=4,5$ gauged supergravity. In $d=4$ we consider gauged supergravity coupled to vector and hypermultiplets. In $d=5$ we consider gauged supergravity coupled to vector multiplets with a generic gauging of symmetries of the scalar manifold and the $U(1)_R$ gauging of the $R$-symmetry. Analyzing the gaugino conditions we show that when the fermionic shifts do not vanish there are no supersymmetric Bianchi attractors. This is analogous to the known condition that for maximally supersymmetric solutions, all the fermionic shifts must vanish. When the central charge satisfies an extremization condition, some of the fermionic shifts vanish and supersymmetry requires that the symmetries of the scalar manifold do not be gauged. This allows supersymmetric Bianchi attractors sourced by massless gauge fields and a cosmological constant. In five dimensions in the Bianchi I class we show that the anisotropic $AdS_3\times\mathbb{R}^2$ solution is $1/2$ BPS. We also construct a new class of $1/2$ BPS Bianchi III geometries labeled by the central charge. When the central charge takes a special value the Bianchi III geometry reduces to the known $AdS_3\times\mathbb{H}^2$ solution. For the Bianchi V and VII classes the radial spinor breaks all of supersymmetry. We briefly discuss the conditions for possible massive supersymmetric Bianchi solutions by generalizing the matter content to include tensor, hypermultiplets and a generic gauging on the R symmetry.

Viscosity for Anisotropic Reissner Nordström Blackbranes

We investigate the behavior of shear viscosity in the presence of small anisotropy and a finite chemical potential. First, we construct an anisotropic Reissner Nordstr{ö}m blackbrane in 5 dimensions in a simple Einstein-Maxwell theory with a small linear dilaton. This solution is characterized by three mass scales : anisotropy $ρ$, temperature T and chemical potential $μ$. We find this solution upto second order in the dilaton anisotropy parameter $ρ$. This blackbrane solution corresponds to an anisotropic phase where the anisotropy is small compared to the temperature and chemical potential. We find that in this anisotropic phase, some components of the anisotropic shear viscosity tensor, which are spin one with respect to the residual symmetry after breaking rotational invariance, violates the KSS bound (${η\over s}\ge {1 \over 4 π} $) proposed by Kovtun, Son and Starinets. We identify the regions of the parameter space where these violations are significant. We carry out a similar analysis in 4 dimensions and find similar violation of the KSS bound for the spin one components to demonstrate the generality of the result. Our results are particularly relevant in the context of strongly coupled systems found in nature. We also provide an intuitive understanding of the results using dimensional reduction and a Boltzmann calculation in a weakly coupled version of a similar system. The Boltzmann analysis performed in a system of weakly interacting particles in a linear potential also shows that components of the viscosity tensor may be reduced. It is intriguing that the Boltzmann analysis also predicts the corrections to be negative and that too in a manner similar to the anisotropic strongly coupled theories with smooth gravity duals.

A Proposal for measuring Anisotropic Shear Viscosity in Unitary Fermi Gases

We present a proposal to measure anisotropic shear viscosity in a strongly interacting, ultra-cold, unitary Fermi gas confined in a harmonic trap. We introduce anisotropy in this setup by strongly confining the gas in one of the directions with relatively weak confinement in the remaining directions. This system has a close resemblance to anisotropic strongly coupled field theories studied recently in the context of gauge-gravity duality. Computations in such theories (which have gravity duals) revealed that some of the viscosity components of the anisotropic shear viscosity tensor can be made much smaller than the entropy density, thus parametrically violating the bound proposed by Kovtun, Son and Starinets (KSS): $\frac η {s} \geq \frac{1}{4 π}$. A Boltzmann analysis performed in a system of weakly interacting particles in a linear potential also shows that components of the viscosity tensor can be reduced. Motivated by these exciting results, we propose two hydrodynamic modes in the unitary Fermi gas whose damping is governed by the component of shear viscosity expected to violate the KSS bound. One of these modes is the well known scissor mode. We estimate trap parameters for which the reduction in the shear viscosity is of order unity and find that the trap geometry, the damping timescales, and mode amplitudes are within the range of existing experimental setups on ultra-cold Fermi gases.

The Shear Viscosity in Anisotropic Phases

We construct anisotropic black brane solutions and analyse the behaviour of some of their metric perturbations. These solutions correspond to field theory duals in which rotational symmetry is broken due an externally applied, spatially constant, force. We find, in several examples, that when the anisotropy is sufficiently big compared to the temperature, some components of the viscosity tensor can become very small in units of the entropy density, parametrically violating the KSS bound. We obtain an expression relating these components of the viscosity, in units of the entropy density, to a ratio of metric components at the horizon of the black brane. This relation is generally valid, as long as the forcing function is translationally invariant, and it directly connects the parametric violation of the bound to the anisotropy in the metric at the horizon. Our results suggest the possibility that such small components of the viscosity tensor might also arise in anisotropic strongly coupled fluids found in nature.

Looking for lepton flavour violation in supersymmetry at the LHC

We consider models of supersymmetry which can incorporate sizeable mixing between different generations of sfermions. While the mixing is constrained by the non-observation of various flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) processes, there exist regions of SUSY parameter space where the effects of such mixing can be probed at colliders. In this work, we explore this possibility by focussing on the slepton sector. The sleptons are produced through cascade decays in direct neutralino-chargino ($χ_2^0χ_1^\pm$) pair production at the LHC. The final state is characterized by 3 leptons and missing energy. We probe the lepton flavour violating (LFV) vertex originating from $χ_2^0$ decay and identify a distinct and unambiguous combination of the tri-lepton final state which include a lepton pair with same flavour and same sign (SFSS) in addition to a pair with opposite flavour and opposite sign (OFOS). This combination of tri-lepton final state containing both OFOS and SFSS pairs, can not only suppress the SM background but can also differentiate the flavour violating decays of $χ_2^0$ from its corresponding flavour conserving decays. We present results for various signal benchmark points taking into account background contributions assuming two luminosity options (100 fb$^{-1}$ and 1000 fb$^{-1}$) for LHC Run 2 experiment.

Stable Bianchi III attractor in $U(1)_R$ gauged supergravity

Bianchi attractors are homogeneous but anisotropic extremal black brane horizons. We study the $AdS_3 \times \mathbb{H}^2$ solution which is a special case of Bianchi type III in a $U(1)_R$ gauged supergravity. For a wide range of values for certain free parameters in gauged supergravity, there exist a large class of solutions that satisfy conditions for the attractor mechanism to hold. We investigate the response of the solution against linearized fluctuations of the scalar field. The sufficient conditions for the attractor mechanism ensure that there exist a solution for the scalar fluctuation which dies out at the horizon. Furthermore, we solve for the gauge field and metric fluctuations that are sourced by scalar fluctuations and show that they are well behaved near the horizon. Thus, we have an example of a stable Bianchi attractor in gauged supergravity. We also analyze the Killing spinor equations of gauged supergravity in the background of our solution. We find that a radial Killing spinor consistent with the Bianchi III symmetry breaks supersymmetry.

Interpolating from Bianchi Attractors to Lifshitz and AdS Spacetimes

We construct classes of smooth metrics which interpolate from Bianchi attractor geometries of Types II, III, VI and IX in the IR to Lifshitz or $AdS_2 \times S^3$ geometries in the UV. While we do not obtain these metrics as solutions of Einstein gravity coupled to a simple matter field theory, we show that the matter sector stress-energy required to support these geometries (via the Einstein equations) does satisfy the weak, and therefore also the null, energy condition. Since Lifshitz or $AdS_2 \times S^3$ geometries can in turn be connected to $AdS_5$ spacetime, our results show that there is no barrier, at least at the level of the energy conditions, for solutions to arise connecting these Bianchi attractor geometries to $AdS_5$ spacetime. The asymptotic $AdS_5$ spacetime has no non-normalizable metric deformation turned on, which suggests that furthermore, the Bianchi attractor geometries can be the IR geometries dual to field theories living in flat space, with the breaking of symmetries being either spontaneous or due to sources for other fields. Finally, we show that for a large class of flows which connect two Bianchi attractors, a C-function can be defined which is monotonically decreasing from the UV to the IR as long as the null energy condition is satisfied. However, except for special examples of Bianchi attractors (including AdS space), this function does not attain a finite and non-vanishing constant value at the end points.
