Quantum nonlinear optics on the edge of a few-particle fractional quantum Hall fluid in a small lattice

We study the quantum dynamics in response to time-dependent external potentials of the edge modes of a small fractional quantum Hall fluid composed of few particles on a lattice in a bosonic Laughlin-like state at filling ν = 1/2. We show that the nonlinear chiral Luttinger liquid theory provides a quantitatively accurate description even for the small lattices that are available in state-of-the-art experiments, away from the continuum limit. Experimentally-accessible data related to the quantized value of the bulk transverse Hall conductivity are identified both in the linear and the non-linear response to an external excitation. The strong nonlinearity induced by the open boundaries is responsible for sizable quantum blockade effects, leading to the generation of nonclassical states of the edge modes.

Structure of the nearly-degenerate manifold of lattice quasiholes on a torus

We study the nearly-degenerate quasihole manifold of the bosonic Hofstadter-Hubbard model on a torus, known to host the lattice analog of the Laughlin state at filling fraction $ν= 1/2$. Away from $ν= 1/2$ and in the presence of both localized and delocalized quasiholes, the ratio between the numerically calculated many-body Chern number for certain groups of states and the number of states in the relevant group turns out to be constant for this manifold, which is also manifested in the density profile as the depleted charge of localized quasiholes. Inspired by a zero-mode counting formula derivable from a generalized Pauli principle, we employ a combinatorial scheme to account for the splittings in the manifold, allowing us to interpret some groups of states as the quasihole excitations corresponding to filling fractions lower than $ν= 1/2$. In this scheme, the many-body Chern number of subgroups appears as a simple combinatorial factor.

Autonomous stabilization of photonic Laughlin states through angular momentum potentials

We propose a method to stabilize Laughlin states of a large number of strongly interacting photons by combining a frequency-selective incoherent pump with a step-like potential in the angular momentum basis. Analytical expressions for the preparation efficiency and for the principal error sources are obtained. Direct extension of the preparation scheme to states containing single or multiple quasiholes is discussed.

Time-of-Flight Measurements as a Possible Method to Observe Anyonic Statistics

We propose a standard time-of-flight experiment as a method for observing the anyonic statistics of quasiholes in a fractional quantum Hall state of ultracold atoms. The quasihole states can be stably prepared by pinning the quasiholes with localized potentials and a measurement of the mean square radius of the freely expanding cloud, which is related to the average total angular momentum of the initial state, offers direct signatures of the statistical phase. Our proposed method is validated by Monte Carlo calculations for $ν=1/2$ and $1/3$ fractional quantum Hall liquids containing a realistic number of particles. Extensions to quantum Hall liquids of light and to non-Abelian anyons are briefly discussed.
