Lattice study of the critical bubble in $\mathrm{SU(8)}$ deconfinement transition

Strongly coupled theories are of phenomenological interest, for example as dark matter candidates. Theories that can undergo first order thermal phase transitions are particularly appealing as potential sources of a stochastic gravitational wave background. Determining the expected gravitational wave signal from a first order phase transition requires accurate information on the bubble nucleation rate, but thus far for strongly coupled models these have relied on semiclassical methods. As a first step towards determining the nucleation rate, in this paper we study the confinement-deconfinement phase transition in a 4D SU(8) pure gauge model, using multicanonical Monte Carlo. Resolving the critical bubble for the first time in a pure Yang-Mills model, we determine the critical bubble probability and compare it to results from thin wall calculations. We also compare the effectiveness of different lattice pseudo-order parameters at resolving the condensation transition between the metastable phase and critical bubble branch, and point out the choice of order parameter is crucial to accurately resolve the critical configurations.

Numerical simulations of magnetic monopole evolution in an expanding universe

Magnetic monopoles are an inevitable feature of post-inflation symmetry-breaking phase transitions in grand unified theories. Analytic estimates of their density indicate that they are compatible with standard cosmology only if their mass is less than $10^{11}$ GeV. We initiate a programme of numerical studies of monopole dynamics by simulating a gas of 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles formed by the Kibble mechanism after a phase transition. In this paper we simulate monopoles in a radiation background, but without interactions with the radiation, in order to resolve differences between analytical models. We find that during the radiation era, the monopoles find each other and annihilate efficiently enough to keep their density fraction constant, which supports the modelling of Zel'dovich and Khlopov and Preskill in the epoch when plasma interactions can be neglected. In the matter era the density fraction decreases logarithmically. Further work is needed to quantify the effect of the thermal bath, which is expected to reduce the annihilation rate at later times.

Resolving the critical bubble in SU(8) deconfinement transition

Strongly coupled confining models with a first order phase transition present an interesting DM candidate. Near the critical temperature these models are strongly non-perturbative, and the critical bubble nucleation rate has so far only been estimated via approximative methods. As a model of a strong first order deconfinement transition, we simulate 4D SU(8) pure gauge model with multicanonical Monte Carlo. We demonstrate that resolving the critical bubble is possible in a strongly coupled model. We calculate the free energy of a critical bubble, which gives a rough upper limit for the nucleation rate. For the parameter points we investigated, the thin-wall approximation for the critial bubble free energy is off by a factor of 2, overestimating the rate at least by a factor of $e^{10}$.

Infrared physics of the 3D SU(2) adjoint Higgs model at the crossover transition

We study the crossover phase transition of the SU(2) Georgi-Glashow model in three dimensions. In this model, a confining condensate of topological 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles exists in the Higgs regime. We use lattice Monte Carlo simulations to study the monopole gas across a crossover transition, and demonstrate that gradient flow can be used to renormalize the otherwise divergent monopole number density. The condensation of the monopoles means that the theory admits also a massive photon-like excitation. We show that the renormalized monopole number density is approximately proportional to the square of the photon mass, in agreement with semiclassical results. Our results give insight into behaviour of the Higgs regime near crossover, which has boarder implications for beyond the Standard Model theories containing adjoint scalar fields.

Infrared physics of the $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ Georgi-Glashow crossover transition

We perform a lattice study of the phase transition in the $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ Georgi-Glashow model in three dimensions, where the gauge symmetry is broken to $\mathrm{U}(1)$ by the Higgs mechanism and a photon-like state appears. Due to condensation of monopoles the photon acquires a mass, which depends on the number density of the monopoles. We show that the monopole density can be renormalised on the lattice using gradient flow. Our preliminary results suggest that Polyakov's semiclassical relation between the photon mass and the renormalised monopole density is valid also at the nonperturbative level.
