Sub-kpc scale gas density histograms of the nearby barred spiral galaxy M83: Multi-component molecular gas structure reflecting the galactic environment

We investigate the sub-kiloparsec (sub-kpc) molecular ISM structure and its relation to the galactic environment and star formation in the barred spiral galaxy M83 (NGC 5236). We employ the gas density histogram (GDH), which quantifies molecular gas surface density within $550~\mathrm{pc}\times550~\mathrm{pc}\times100~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$ cells. The GDHs are well described by one or two log-normal components, corresponding to the lower and higher-surface-density molecular components, referred to as L-LN and H-LN, respectively. The L-LN mass ($M_{\rm L}$) is relatively uniform across the disk, whereas the H-LN mass ($M_{\rm H}$) is highly structured and traces spiral arms. The fractional contribution of the H-LN component ($f^{\prime}_{\rm H}$) shows coherent structures across the disk and is enhanced along spiral arms, consistent with our previous Milky Way results. Moreover, while the L-LN correlates only weakly with star formation rate surface density ($Σ_{\rm SFR}$) and shows a steep Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation with surface-density saturation reminiscent of atomic gas, the H-LN exhibits a tighter, nearly linear correlation similar to the conventional molecular KS relation. These results provide direct evidence that the molecular gas in M83 consists of multiple components. Star formation is more closely linked to the H-LN component, whereas the L-LN component appears to represent a more spatially extended molecular gas. Overall, our results suggest that galactic environments control the relative contribution of the two LN components, and that enhanced H-LN contribution is associated with elevated star formation activity.

Gas Kinematics and Cosmic-Ray Acceleration in the Gamma-ray SNRs W41 and G22.7-0.2

We present a study of the interstellar medium associated with the two middle-aged supernova remnants (SNRs) W41 and G22.7-0.2, both detected in TeV gamma-rays. Using high-angular-resolution $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0) data from the Nobeyama 45-m telescope and HI data from the VLA, we investigated the spatial and kinematic properties of molecular and atomic gas that interact with the SNRs. We identified associated clouds in the velocity ranges of +50-+80 km s$^{-1}$ for W41 and +76-+110 km s$^{-1}$ for G22.7-0.2. Column density analysis indicates that target protons are dominated by molecular hydrogen, while atomic hydrogen contributes less than $\sim$10-15% even after correction for self-absorption. The mean proton densities are $\sim$1.2$\times$10$^{3}$ cm$^{-3}$ for W41 and $\sim$5.3$\times$10$^{2}$ cm$^{-3}$ for G22.7-0.2. From the gamma-ray luminosities, we estimate the total energy of accelerated cosmic-ray protons as $W_\mathrm{p}$ $\sim$3$\times$10$^{47}$~erg for W41 and $\sim$1$\times$10$^{48}$ erg for G22.7-0.2, corresponding to 0.03-0.1% of the canonical supernova explosion energy. hese $W_\mathrm{p}$ values agree with the decreasing trend in $W_\mathrm{p}$ observed in the middle-aged SNRs within the previously reported SNR age-$W_\mathrm{p}$ relation.

FLASHING: Project Overview

This paper describes the overview of the FLASHING (Finest Legacy Acquisitions of SiO-/ H$_2$O-maser Ignitions by the Nobeyama Generation) project promoted using the 45 m telescope of Nobeyama Radio Observatory, which aims to intensively monitor H$_2$O (22 GHz) and SiO (43 GHz) masers associated with so-called "water fountain" sources. Here we show scientific results on the basis of the data taken in for the first five seasons of FLASHING, from 2018 December to 2023 April). We have found the evolution of the H$_2$O maser spectra, such as new spectral components breaking the record of the jet's top speed and/or systematic velocity drifts in the spectrum indicating acceleration or deceleration of the maser gas clumps. For the 43 GHz SiO maser emission, we have found its new detection in a source while its permanent disappearance in other source. Our finding may imply that the jets from these water fountains can be accelerated or decelerated, and show how cicumstellar envelopes have been destroyed.
