A Numerical Approach to Scalar Nonlocal Conservation Laws

We address the study of a class of 1D nonlocal conservation laws from a numerical point of view. First, we present an algorithm to numerically integrate them and prove its convergence. Then, we use this algorithm to investigate various analytical properties, obtaining evidence that usual properties of standard conservation laws fail in the nonlocal setting. Moreover, on the basis of our numerical integrations, we are lead to conjecture the convergence of the nonlocal equation to the local ones, although no analytical results are, to our knowledge, available in this context.

Conservation laws in the modeling of moving crowds

This paper is a proceeding of the conference hyp2012 that was held in Padova in June 2012. Models for crowd dynamics are presented and compared. Well posedness results allow to exhibit the existence of optimal controls in various situations. A new approach not based on partial differential equations is also briefly considered.

Nonlocal Crowd Dynamics Models for several Populations

This paper develops the basic analytical theory related to some recently introduced crowd dynamics models. Where well posedness was known only locally in time, it is here extended to all of $\reali^+$. The results on the stability with respect to the equations are improved. Moreover, here the case of several populations is considered, obtaining the well posedness of systems of multi-D non-local conservation laws. The basic analytical tools are provided by the classical Kruzkov theory of scalar conservation laws in several space dimensions.

A Class of Non-Local Models for Pedestrian Traffic

We present a new class of macroscopic models for pedestrian flows. Each individual is assumed to move towards a fixed target, deviating from the best path according to the instantaneous crowd distribution. The resulting equation is a conservation law with a nonlocal flux. Each equation in this class generates a Lipschitz semigroup of solutions and is stable with respect to the functions and parameters defining it. Moreover, key qualitative properties such as the boundedness of the crowd density are proved. Specific models are presented and their qualitative properties are shown through numerical integrations.

An Analytical Framework to Describe the Interactions Between Individuals and a Continuum

We consider a discrete set of individual agents interacting with a continuum. Examples might be a predator facing a huge group of preys, or a few shepherd dogs driving a herd of sheeps. Analytically, these situations can be described through a system of ordinary differential equations coupled with a scalar conservation law in several space dimensions. This paper provides a complete well posedness theory for the resulting Cauchy problem. A few applications are considered in detail and numerical integrations are provided.

Coupling conditions for the 3x3 Euler system

This paper is devoted to the extension to the full $3\times3$ Euler system of the basic analytical properties of the equations governing a fluid flowing in a duct with varying section. First, we consider the Cauchy problem for a pipeline consisting of 2 ducts joined at a junction. Then, this result is extended to more complex pipes. A key assumption in these theorems is the boundedness of the total variation of the pipe's section. We provide explicit examples to show that this bound is necessary.

A 2-phase traffic model based on a speed bound

We extend the classical LWR traffic model allowing different maximal speeds to different vehicles. Then, we add a uniform bound on the traffic speed. The result, presented in this paper, is a new macro- scopic model displaying 2 phases, based on a non-smooth 2x2 system of conservation laws. This model is compared with other models of the same type in the current literature, as well as with a kinetic one. Moreover, we establish a rigorous connection between a microscopic Follow-The-Leader model based on ordinary differential equations and this macroscopic continuum model.

Smooth and discontinuous junctions in the p-system

Consider the p-system describing the subsonic flow of a fluid in a pipe with section a = a(x). We prove that the resulting Cauchy problem generates a Lipschitz semigroup, provided the total variation of the initial datum and the oscillation of a are small. An explicit estimate on the bound of the total variation of a is provided, showing that at lower fluid speeds, higher total variations of a are acceptable. An example shows that the bound on TV(a) is mandatory, for otherwise the total variation of the solution may grow arbitrarily.

On the 1D Modeling of Fluid Flowing through a Junction

Consider a fluid flowing through a junction between two pipes with different sections. Its evolution is described by the 2D or 3D Euler equations, whose analytical theory is far from complete and whose numerical treatment may be rather costly. This note compares different 1D approaches to this phenomenon.

Control of the Continuity Equation with a Non Local Flow

This paper focuses on the optimal control of weak (i.e. in general non smooth) solutions to the continuity equation with non local flow. Our driving examples are a supply chain model and an equation for the description of pedestrian flows. To this aim, we prove the well posedness of a class of equations comprising these models. In particular, we prove the differentiability of solutions with respect to the initial datum and characterize its derivative. A necessary condition for the optimality of suitable integral functionals then follows.

On General Balance Laws with Boundary

This paper is devoted to general balance laws (with a possibly non local source term) with a non-characteristic boundary. Basic well posedness results are obtained, trying to provide sharp estimates. In particular, bounds tend to blow up as the boundary tends to be characteristic. New uniqueness results for the solutions to conservation and/or balance laws with boundary are also provided.

Stability and Total Variation Estimates on General Scalar Balance Laws

Consider the general scalar balance law $\partial_t u + \Div f(t, x,u) = F(t,x,u)$ in several space dimensions. The aim of this note is to estimate the dependence of its solutions from the flow $f$ and from the source $F$. To this aim, a bound on the total variation in the space variables of the solution is obtained. This result is then applied to obtain well posedness and stability estimates for a balance law with a non local source.

Hyperbolic Balance Laws with a Dissipative Non Local Source

This paper considers systems of balance law with a dissipative non local source. A global in time well posedness result is obtained. Estimates on the dependence of solutions from the flow and from the source term are also provided. The technique relies on a recent result on quasidifferential equations in metric spaces.

On the Stability Functional for Conservation Laws

This note is devoted to the explicit construction of a functional defined on all pairs of $\L1$ functions with small total variation, which is equivalent to the $\L1$ distance and non increasing along the trajectories of a given system of conservation laws. Two different constructions are provided, yielding an extension of the original stability functional by Bressan, Liu and Yang.

Differential Equations in Metric Spaces with Applications

This paper proves the local well posedness of differential equations in metric spaces under assumptions that allow to comprise several different applications. We consider below a system of balance laws with a dissipative non local source, the Hille-Yosida Theorem, a generalization of a recent result on nonlinear operator splitting, an extension of Trotter formula for linear semigroups and the heat equation.

Hyperbolic Balance Laws with a Non Local Source

This paper is devoted to hyperbolic systems of balance laws with non local source terms. The existence, uniqueness and Lipschitz dependence proved here comprise previous results in the literature and can be applied to physical models, such as Euler system for a radiating gas and Rosenau regularization of the Chapman-Enskog expansion.

On the Stability of the Standard Riemann Semigroup

We consider the dependence of the entropic solution of a hyperbolic system of conservation laws \[ \{\{array}{c} u_t + f(u)_x = 0 u(0,\cdot) = u_0 \{array} \] on the flux function f. We prove that the solution in Lipschitz continuous w.r.t.~the $C^0$ norm of the derivative of the perturbation of f. We apply this result to prove the convergence of the solution of the relativistic Euler equation to the classical limit.
