Weak synchronisation for McKean--Vlasov SDEs

Synchronisation by noise for McKean--Vlasov stochastic differential equations is investigated. A transfer principle is introduced by which synchronisation by noise and diagonal mixing can be transferred from an associated limiting frozen-diffusion SDE to a genuinely law-dependent McKean--Vlasov SDE. The usefulness of this principle is demonstrated through an application to ensemble Kalman sampling, thereby providing its first application in a sampling context. Synchronisation for SDEs with multiplicative noise is then revisited from the perspective of sampling. Existing general frameworks providing sufficient conditions for synchronisation by noise are refined and extended to a control-oriented setting on noncompact state spaces, and coefficient-level conditions are derived by which these criteria can be verified. Motivated by extrapolation schemes in sampling, the freedom in the construction of couplings for a fixed sampler is emphasised, together with the advantage of choosing couplings that exhibit favourable synchronisation properties.

Formation of clusters and coarsening in weakly interacting diffusions

This paper studies the clustering behavior of weakly interacting diffusions under the influence of sufficiently localized attractive interaction potentials on the one-dimensional torus. We describe how this clustering behavior is closely related to the presence of discontinuous phase transitions in the mean-field PDE. For local attractive interactions, we employ a new variant of the strict Riesz rearrangement inequality to prove that all global minimizers of the free energy are either uniform or single-cluster states, in the sense that they are symmetrically decreasing. We analyze different timescales for the particle system and the mean-field (McKean-Vlasov) PDE, arguing that while the particle system can exhibit coarsening by both coalescence and diffusive mass exchange between clusters, the clusters in the mean-field PDE are unable to move and coarsening occurs via the mass exchange of clusters. By introducing a new model for this mass exchange, we argue that the PDE exhibits dynamical metastability. We conclude by presenting careful numerical experiments that demonstrate the validity of our model.

Stochastic estimates for the thin-film equation with thermal noise

We construct and derive uniform stochastic estimates on the renormalised model for a class of fourth-order conservative quasilinear singular SPDEs in arbitrary dimension $d\geq 1$ and in the full subcritical regime of noise regularity. The prototype of the class of equations we study is the so-called thin-film equation with thermal noise, also commonly referred to in the literature as the stochastic thin-film equation. We derive an explicit expression for the form of the counterterm as a function of the film mobility which is in surprising agreement with the form conjectured in Remark 9.1 of Math. Comp. 92 (2023), 1931-976.

Sharp local sparsity of regularized optimal transport

In recent years, the use of entropy-regularized optimal transport with $L^p$-type entropies has become increasingly popular. In this setting, the solutions are sparse, in the sense that the support of the regularized optimal coupling, $\mathrm{supp}(π_\varepsilon)$, shrinks to the support of the original optimal transport problem as $\varepsilon \to 0$. The main open question concerns the rate of this convergence. In this paper, we obtain sharp local results away from the boundary. We prove that the supports $\mathrm{supp}(π_\varepsilon(\cdot \mid x))$ of the conditional measures, $π_\varepsilon(\cdot \mid x)$, behave like balls of radius $\varepsilon^\frac 1 {d(p-1)+2}$. This allows us to show that the regularized potentials are uniformly strongly convex and to derive the rate of convergence of these potentials toward their unregularized limit. Our results generalize the results of (González-Sanz and Nutz, SIAM J.~Math.~Anal.) and (Wiesel and Xu, Ibid.) to the multivariate case and beyond the case of self-transport.

Sparsity and uniform regularity for regularised optimal transport

We consider regularised quadratic optimal transport with subquadratic polynomial or entropic regularisation. In both cases, we prove interior Lipschitz-estimates on a transport-like map and interior gradient Lipschitz-estimates on the potentials, under the assumption that the transport map solving the unregularised problem is bi-$C^{1,α}$-regular. For strictly subquadratic and entropic regularisation, the estimates improve to interior $C^1$ and $C^2$ estimates for the transport-like map and the potentials, respectively. Our estimates are uniform in the regularisation parameter. As a consequence of this, we obtain convergence of the transport-like map (resp. the potentials) to the unregularised transport map (resp. Kantorovich potentials) in $C^{0,1-}_{\mathrm{loc}}$ (resp. $C^{1,1-}_{\mathrm{loc}}$). Central to our approach are sharp local bounds on the size of the support for regularised optimal transport which we derive for a general convex, superlinear regularisation term. These bounds are of independent interest and imply global bias bounds for the regularised transport plans. Our global bounds, while not necessarily sharp, improve on the best known results in the literature for quadratic regularisation.

Ergodicity for SPDEs driven by divergence-free transport noise

We study the ergodic behaviour of the McKean-Vlasov equations driven by common, divergence-free transport noise. In particular, we show that in dimension $d\geq 2$, if the noise is mixing and sufficiently strong it can enforce the uniqueness of invariant probability measures, even if the deterministic part of equation has multiple steady states.

Random dynamical systems for McKean--Vlasov SDEs via rough path theory

The existence of random dynamical systems for McKean--Vlasov SDEs is established. This is approached by considering the joint dynamics of the corresponding nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation governing the law of the system and the underlying stochastic differential equation (SDE) as a dynamical system on the product space $\RR^d \times \mathcal{P}(\RR^d)$. The proof relies on two main ingredients: At the level of the SDE, a pathwise rough path-based solution theory for SDEs with time-dependent coefficients is implemented, while at the level of the PDE a well-posedness theory is developed, for measurable solutions and allowing for degenerate diffusion coefficients. The results apply in particular to the so-called ensemble Kalman sampler (EKS), proving the existence of an associated RDS under some assumptions on the posterior, as well as to the Lagrangian formulation of the Landau equation with Maxwell molecules. As a by-product of the main results, the uniqueness of solutions non-linear Fokker--Planck equations associated to the EKS is shown.

Sharp mean-field estimates for the repulsive log gas in any dimension

We prove sharp estimates for the mean-field limit of weakly interacting diffusions with repulsive logarithmic interaction in arbitrary dimension. More precisely, we show that the associated partition function is uniformly bounded in the number of particles $N$ for an arbitrary bounded base measure. Combined with the modulated free energy method, this amounts to a logarithmic improvement in $N$ of the current best available closeness estimates in the literature. Our arguments are inspired by and borrow ideas from Nelson's classical construction of the $φ^4_2$ Euclidean quantum field theory.

Separation of time scales in weakly interacting diffusions

We study metastable behaviour in systems of weakly interacting Brownian particles with localised, attractive potentials which are smooth and globally bounded. In this particular setting, numerical evidence suggests that the particles converge on a short time scale to a "droplet state" which is $metastable$, i.e. persists on a much longer time scale than the time scale of convergence, before eventually diffusing to $0$. In this article, we provide rigorous evidence and a quantitative characterisation of this separation of time scales. Working at the level of the empirical measure, we show that (after quotienting out the motion of the centre of mass) the rate of convergence to the quasi-stationary distribution, which corresponds with the droplet state, is $O(1)$ as the inverse temperature $β\to \infty$. Meanwhile the rate of leakage away from its centre of mass is $O(e^{-β})$. Futhermore, the quasi-stationary distribution is localised on a length scale of order $O(β^{-\frac12})$. We thus provide a partial answer to a question posed by Carrillo, Craig, and Yao (Aggregation-Diffusion Equations: Dynamics, Asymptotics, and Singular Limits. In: Active Particles, Volume 2, 2019) in the microscopic setting.

Uniform large-scale $\varepsilon$-regularity for entropic optimal transport

We study the regularity properties of the minimisers of entropic optimal transport providing a natural analogue of the $\varepsilon$-regularity theory of quadratic optimal transport in the entropic setting. More precisely, we show that if the minimiser of the entropic problem satisfies a gradient BMO-type estimate at some scale, the same estimate holds all the way down to the natural length-scale associated to the entropic regularisation. Our result follows from a more general $\varepsilon$-regularity theory for optimal transport costs which can be viewed as perturbations of quadratic optimal transport. We consider such a perturbed cost and require that, under a certain class of admissible affine rescalings, the minimiser remains a local quasi-minimiser of the quadratic problem (in an appropriate sense) and that the cost of "long trajectories" of minimisers (and their rescalings) is small. Under these assumptions, we show that the minimiser satisfies an appropriate $C^{2,α}$ Morrey$\unicode{x2013}$Campanato-type estimate which is valid up to the scale of quasi-minimality.

Statistically self-similar mixing by Gaussian random fields

We study the passive transport of a scalar field by a spatially smooth but white-in-time incompressible Gaussian random velocity field on $\mathbb{R}^d$. If the velocity field $u$ is homogeneous, isotropic, and statistically self-similar, we derive an exact formula which captures non-diffusive mixing. For zero diffusivity, the formula takes the shape of $\mathbb{E}\ \| θ_t \|_{\dot{H}^{-s}}^2 = \mathrm{e}^{-λ_{d,s} t} \| θ_0 \|_{\dot{H}^{-s}}^2$ with any $s\in (0,d/2)$ and $\frac{λ_{d,s}}{D_1}:= s(\frac{λ_{1}}{D_1}-2s)$ where $λ_1/D_1 = d$ is the top Lyapunov exponent associated to the random Lagrangian flow generated by $u$ and $ D_1$ is small-scale shear rate of the velocity. Moreover, the mixing is shown to hold $\textit{uniformly}$ in diffusivity.

Conservative SPDEs as fluctuating mean field limits of stochastic gradient descent

The convergence of stochastic interacting particle systems in the mean-field limit to solutions of conservative stochastic partial differential equations is established, with optimal rate of convergence. As a second main result, a quantitative central limit theorem for such SPDEs is derived, again, with optimal rate of convergence. The results apply, in particular, to the convergence in the mean-field scaling of stochastic gradient descent dynamics in overparametrized, shallow neural networks to solutions of SPDEs. It is shown that the inclusion of fluctuations in the limiting SPDE improves the rate of convergence, and retains information about the fluctuations of stochastic gradient descent in the continuum limit.

Ergodicity and random dynamical systems for conservative SPDEs

The dynamics of the solutions to a class of conservative SPDEs are analysed from two perspectives: Firstly, a probabilistic construction of a corresponding random dynamical system is given for the first time. Secondly, the existence and uniqueness of invariant measures, as well as mixing for the associated Markov process is shown.

Exponential mixing for random dynamical systems and an example of Pierrehumbert

We consider the question of exponential mixing for random dynamical systems on arbitrary compact manifolds without boundary. We put forward a robust, dynamics-based framework that allows us to construct space-time smooth, uniformly bounded in time, universal exponential mixers. The framework is then applied to the problem of proving exponential mixing in a classical example proposed by Pierrehumbert in 1994, consisting of alternating periodic shear flows with randomized phases. This settles a longstanding open problem on proving the existence of a space-time smooth (universal) exponentially mixing incompressible velocity field on a two-dimensional periodic domain while also providing a toolbox for constructing such smooth universal mixers in all dimensions.

Thermodynamically consistent and positivity-preserving discretization of the thin-film equation with thermal noise

In micro-fluidics not only does capillarity dominate but also thermal fluctuations become important. On the level of the lubrication approximation, this leads to a quasi-linear fourth-order parabolic equation for the film height $h$ driven by space-time white noise. The gradient flow structure of its deterministic counterpart, the thin-film equation, which encodes the balance between driving capillary and limiting viscous forces, provides the guidance for the thermodynamically consistent introduction of fluctuations. We follow this route on the level of a spatial discretization of the gradient flow structure. Starting from an energetically conformal finite-element (FE) discretization, we point out that the numerical mobility function introduced by Grün and Rumpf can be interpreted as a discretization of the metric tensor in the sense of a mixed FE method with lumping. While this discretization was devised in order to preserve the so-called entropy estimate, we use this to show that the resulting high-dimensional stochastic differential equation (SDE) preserves pathwise and pointwise strict positivity, at least in case of the physically relevant mobility function arising from the no-slip boundary condition. As a consequence, this discretization gives rise to a consistent invariant measure, namely a discretization of the Brownian excursion (up to the volume constraint), and thus features an entropic repulsion. The price to pay over more naive discretizations is that when writing the SDE in Itô's form, which is the basis for the Euler-Mayurama time discretization, a correction term appears. To conclude, we perform various numerical experiments to compare the behavior of our discretization to that of the more naive finite difference discretization of the equation.

Phase transitions, logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, and uniform-in-time propagation of chaos for weakly interacting diffusions

In this article, we study the mean field limit of weakly interacting diffusions for confining and interaction potentials that are not necessarily convex. We explore the relationship between the large $N$ limit of the constant in the logarithmic Sobolev inequality (LSI) for the $N$-particle system and the presence or absence of phase transitions for the mean field limit. The non-degeneracy of the LSI constant is shown to have far reaching consequences, especially in the context of uniform-in-time propagation of chaos and the behaviour of equilibrium fluctuations. Our results extend previous results related to unbounded spin systems and recent results on propagation of chaos using novel coupling methods. As incidentals, we provide concise and, to our knowledge, new proofs of a generalised form of Talagrand's inequality and of quantitative propagation of chaos by employing techniques from the theory of gradient flows, specifically the Riemannian calculus on the space of probability measures.

Barriers of the McKean--Vlasov energy via a mountain pass theorem in the space of probability measures

We show that the empirical process associated with a system of weakly interacting diffusion processes exhibits a form of noise-induced metastability. The result is based on an analysis of the associated McKean--Vlasov free energy, which, for suitable attractive interaction potentials, has at least two distinct global minimisers at the critical parameter value $β=β_c$. On the torus, one of these states is the spatially homogeneous constant state, and the other is a clustered state. We show that a third critical point exists at this value. As a result, we obtain that the probability of transition of the empirical process from the constant state scales like $\exp(-N Δ)$, with $Δ$ the energy gap at $β=β_c$. The proof is based on a version of the mountain pass theorem for lower semicontinuous and $λ$-geodesically convex functionals on the space of probability measures $\mathcal{P}_2(M)$ equipped with the $2$-Wasserstein metric, where $M$ is a complete, connected, and smooth Riemannian manifold.

Phase transitions for nonlinear nonlocal aggregation-diffusion equations

We are interested in studying the stationary solutions and phase transitions of aggregation equations with degenerate diffusion of porous medium-type, with exponent $1 < m < \infty$. We first prove the existence of possibly infinitely many bifurcations from the spatially homogeneous steady state. We then focus our attention on the associated free energy proving existence of minimisers and even uniqueness for sufficiently weak interactions. In the absence of uniqueness, we show that the system exhibits phase transitions: we classify values of $m$ and interaction potentials $W$ for which these phase transitions are continuous or discontinuous. Finally, we comment on the limit $m \to \infty$ and the influence that the presence of a phase transition has on this limit.
