$Γ$-convergence and stochastic homogenization for functionals in the $\mathcal{A}$-free setting

We obtain a compactness result for $Γ$-convergence of integral functionals defined on $\mathcal{A}$-free vector fields. This is used to study homogenization problems for these functionals without periodicity assumptions. More precisely, we prove that the homogenized integrand can be obtained by taking limits of minimum values of suitable minimization problems on large cubes, when the side length of these cubes tends to $+\infty$, assuming that these limit values do not depend on the center of the cube. Under the usual stochastic periodicity assumptions, this result is then used to solve the stochastic homogenization problem by means of the subadditive ergodic theorem.

Weak-Strong Uniqueness for Second-Order Mean-Field Games

We extend the weak-strong uniqueness principle for mean-field game (MFG) systems to a broad class of second-order stationary and time-dependent problems. Under standard monotonicity, growth, and coercivity assumptions on the Hamiltonian, and relying strictly on the integrability exponents guaranteed by the existing theory for monotone MFG systems, we show that any weak solution must coincide with a given strong solution. Our analysis covers models with spatially dependent scalar diffusion coefficients, using monotonicity arguments and a coefficient-adapted mollification strategy to manage the variable diffusion terms. We extend this strategy to establish weak-strong uniqueness in the corresponding second-order, initial-terminal, time-dependent setting. Finally, to address the critical quadratic growth regime, we derive a new a priori second-order estimate for a stationary MFG system with logarithmic coupling. This estimate provides quantitative bounds on the solution in terms of the data, and yields weak-strong uniqueness in the range where the improved integrability yields $L^2$ control of the density. Since numerical and approximation methods for MFGs naturally yield weak solutions in the monotonicity sense, whereas strong solutions are known to exist in many settings, our results identify any weak limit produced by such methods with the strong solution whenever one exists.

Solving Mean-Field Games with Monotonicity Methods in Banach Spaces

This paper develops a unified framework for proving the existence of solutions to stationary first-order mean-field games (MFGs) based on the theory of monotone operators in Banach spaces. We cast the coupled MFG system as a variational inequality, overcoming the limitations of prior Hilbert-space approaches that relied on high-order regularization and typically yielded only weak solutions in the monotone operator sense. In contrast, with our low-order regularization, we obtain strong solutions. Our approach addresses the non-coercivity of the underlying MFG operator through two key regularization strategies. First, by adding a low-order $p$-Laplacian term, we restore coercivity, derive uniform a priori estimates, and pass to the limit via Minty's method. This establishes, for the first time via monotonicity methods, the existence of strong solutions for models with both standard power-growth and singular congestion, with the latter requiring a careful restriction of the operator's domain. Second, for Hamiltonians with only minimal growth hypotheses, we regularize the Hamiltonian itself via infimal convolution to prove the existence of weak solutions. Our Banach-space framework unifies and extends earlier existence results. By avoiding high-order smoothing, it not only provides a more direct theoretical path but is also ideally suited for modern numerical algorithms.

Monotonicity of the jump set and jump amplitudes in one-dimensional TV denoising

We revisit the classical problem of denoising a one-dimensional scalar-valued function by minimizing the sum of an $L^2$ fidelity term and the total variation, scaled by a regularization parameter. This study focuses on proving that the jump set of solutions, corresponding to discontinuities or edges, as well as the amplitude of the jumps are nonincreasing as the regularization parameter increases. Compared with previous works, our results apply to a strictly larger class of input functions, extending beyond the traditional setting of functions of bounded variation to any input in $L^\infty$ with left and right approximate limits everywhere. The proof leverages competitor constructions and convexity properties of the taut string problem, a well-known equivalent formulation of the TV model. This monotonicity property reflects that the extent to which geometric and topological features of the original signal are preserved is consistent with the amount of smoothing desired when formulating the denoising method.

Junction in a thin multi-domain for nonsimple grade two materials in BH

We consider a thin multi-domain of $\mathbb R^N$, with $N\geq 2$, consisting of a vertical rod upon a horizontal disk. In this thin multi-domain, we introduce a bulk energy density of the kind $W(D^2U)$, where $W$ is a continuous function with linear growth at $\infty$ and $D^2U$ denotes the Hessian tensor of a vector-valued function $U$ that represents a deformation of the multi-domain. Considering suitable boundary conditions on the admissible deformations and assuming that the two volumes tend to zero with same rate, we prove that the limit model is well posed in the union of the limit domains, with dimensions $1$ and $N-1$, respectively. Moreover, we show that the limit problem is uncoupled if $N\geq 3$, and ``partially" coupled if $N=2$.

Weak-strong uniqueness for solutions to mean-field games

This paper addresses the crucial question of solution uniqueness in stationary first-order Mean-Field Games (MFGs). Despite well-established existence results, establishing uniqueness, particularly for weaker solutions in the sense of monotone operators, remains an open challenge. Building upon the framework of monotonicity methods, we introduce a linearization method that enables us to prove a weak-strong uniqueness result for stationary MFG systems on the d-dimensional torus. In particular, we give explicit conditions under which this uniqueness holds.

An introduction to monotonicity methods in mean-field games

This chapter examines monotonicity techniques in the theory of mean-field games(MFGs). Originally, monotonicity ideas were used to establish the uniqueness of solutions for MFGs. Later, monotonicity methods and monotone operators were further exploited to build numerical methods and to construct weak solutions under mild assumptions. Here, after a brief discussion on the mean-field game formulation, we introduce the Minty method and regularization strategies for PDEs. These are then used to address typical stationary and time-dependent monotone MFGs and to establish the existence of weak solutions for such MFGs.

Dyadic partition-based training schemes for TV/TGV denoising

Due to their ability to handle discontinuous images while having a well-understood behavior, regularizations with total variation (TV) and total generalized variation (TGV) are some of the best-known methods in image denoising. However, like other variational models including a fidelity term, they crucially depend on the choice of their tuning parameters. A remedy is to choose these automatically through multilevel approaches, for example by optimizing performance on noisy/clean image pairs. In this work, we consider such methods with space-dependent parameters which are piecewise constant on dyadic grids, with the grid itself being part of the minimization. We prove existence of minimizers for fixed discontinuous parameters under mild assumptions on the data, which lead to existence of finite optimal partitions. We further establish that these assumptions are equivalent to the commonly used box constraints on the parameters. On the numerical side, we consider a simple subdivision scheme for optimal partitions built on top of any other bilevel optimization method for scalar parameters, and demonstrate its improved performance on some representative test images when compared with constant optimized parameters.

Structural changes in nonlocal denoising models arising through bi-level parameter learning

We introduce a unified framework based on bi-level optimization schemes to deal with parameter learning in the context of image processing. The goal is to identify the optimal regularizer within a family depending on a parameter in a general topological space. Our focus lies on the situation with non-compact parameter domains, which is, for example, relevant when the commonly used box constraints are disposed of. To overcome this lack of compactness, we propose a natural extension of the upper-level functional to the closure of the parameter domain via Gamma-convergence, which captures possible structural changes in the reconstruction model at the edge of the domain. Under two main assumptions, namely, Mosco-convergence of the regularizers and uniqueness of minimizers of the lower-level problem, we prove that the extension coincides with the relaxation, thus admitting minimizers that relate to the parameter optimization problem of interest. We apply our abstract framework to investigate a quartet of practically relevant models in image denoising, all featuring nonlocality. The associated families of regularizers exhibit qualitatively different parameter dependence, describing a weight factor, an amount of nonlocality, an integrability exponent, and a fractional order, respectively. After the asymptotic analysis that determines the relaxation in each of the four settings, we finally establish theoretical conditions on the data that guarantee structural stability of the models and give examples of when stability is lost.

A Potential Approach for Planning Mean-Field Games in One Dimension

This manuscript discusses planning problems for first- and second-order one-dimensional mean-field games (MFGs). These games are comprised of a Hamilton-Jacobi equation coupled with a Fokker-Planck equation. Applying Poincaré's Lemma to the Fokker-Planck equation, we deduce the existence of a potential. Rewriting the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in terms of the potential, we obtain a system of Euler-Lagrange equations for certain variational problems. Instead of the mean-field planning problem (MFP), we study this variational problem. By the direct method in the calculus of variations, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the variational problem. The variational approach has the advantage of eliminating the continuity equation. We also consider a first-order MFP with congestion. We prove that the congestion problem has a weak solution by introducing a potential and relying on the theory of variational inequalities. We end the paper by presenting an application to the one-dimensional Hughes' model.

Homogenization of quasi-crystalline functionals via two-scale-cut-and-project convergence

We consider a homogenization problem associated with quasi-crystalline multiple integrals of the form \begin{equation*} \begin{aligned} u_\varepsilon\in L^p(Ω;\mathbb{R}^d) \mapsto \int_Ωf_R\Big(x,\frac{x}{\varepsilon}, u_\varepsilon(x)\Big)\, dx, \end{aligned} \end{equation*} where $u_\varepsilon$ is subject to constant-coefficient linear partial differential constraints. The quasi-crystalline structure of the underlying composite is encoded in the dependence on the second variable of the Lagrangian, $f_R$, and is modeled via the cut-and-project scheme that interprets the heterogeneous microstructure to be homogenized as an irrational subspace of a higher-dimensional space. A key step in our analysis is the characterization of the quasi-crystalline two-scale limits of sequences of the vector fields $u_\varepsilon$ that are in the kernel of a given constant-coefficient linear partial differential operator, $\mathcal{A}$, that is, $\mathcal{A} u _\varepsilon =0$. Our results provide a generalization of related ones in the literature concerning the ${\rm \mathcal{A} =curl } $ case to more general differential operators $\mathcal{A}$ with constant coefficients, and without coercivity assumptions on the Lagrangian $f_R$.

Uniform estimates for the planning problem with potential

In this paper, we study a priori estimates for a first-order mean-field planning problem with a potential. In the theory of mean-field games (MFGs), a priori estimates play a crucial role to prove the existence of classical solutions. In particular, uniform bounds for the density of players' distribution and its inverse are of utmost importance. Here, we investigate a priori bounds for those quantities for a planning problem with a non-vanishing potential. The presence of a potential raises non-trivial difficulties, which we overcome by exploring a displacement-convexity property for the mean-field planning problem with a potential together with Moser's iteration method. We show that if the potential satisfies a certain smallness condition, then a displacement-convexity property holds. This property enables $L^q$ bounds for the density. In the one-dimensional case, the displacement-convexity property also gives $L^q$ bounds for the inverse of the density. Finally, using these $L^q$ estimates and Moser's iteration method, we obtain $L^\infty$ estimates for the density of the distribution of the players and its inverse.

Existence of weak solutions to time-dependent mean-field games

Here, we establish the existence of weak solutions to a wide class of time-dependent monotone mean-field games (MFGs). These MFGs are given as a system of degenerate parabolic equations with initial and terminal conditions. To construct these solutions, we consider a high-order elliptic regularization in space-time. Then, using Schaefer's fixed-point theorem, we obtain the existence and uniqueness for this regularized problem. Using Minty's method, we prove the existence of a weak solution to the original MFG. Finally, the paper ends with a discussion on congestion problems and density constrained MFGs.

Two-scale homogenization of a stationary mean-field game

In this paper, we characterize the asymptotic behavior of a first-order stationary mean-field game (MFG) with a logarithm coupling, a quadratic Hamiltonian, and a periodically oscillating potential. This study falls into the realm of the homogenization theory, and our main tool is the two-scale convergence. Using this convergence, we rigorously derive the two-scale homogenized and the homogenized MFG problems, which encode the so-called macroscopic or effective behavior of the original oscillating MFG. Moreover, we prove existence and uniqueness of the solution to these limit problems.

Homogenization in $BV$ of a model for layered composites in finite crystal plasticity

In this work, we study the effective behavior of a two-dimensional variational model within finite crystal plasticity for high-contrast bilayered composites. Precisely, we consider materials arranged into periodically alternating thin horizontal strips of an elastically rigid component and a softer one with one active slip system. The energies arising from these modeling assumptions are of integral form, featuring linear growth and non-convex differential constraints. We approach this non-standard homogenization problem via Gamma-convergence. A crucial first step in the asymptotic analysis is the characterization of rigidity properties of limits of admissible deformations in the space $BV$ of functions of bounded variation. In particular, we prove that, under suitable assumptions, the two-dimensional body may split horizontally into finitely many pieces, each of which undergoes shear deformation and global rotation. This allows us to identify a potential candidate for the homogenized limit energy, which we show to be a lower bound on the Gamma-limit. In the framework of non-simple materials, we present a complete Gamma-convergence result, including an explicit homogenization formula, for a regularized model with an anisotropic penalization in the layer direction.

Existence of weak solutions to first-order stationary mean-field games with Dirichlet conditions

In this paper, we study first-order stationary monotone mean-field games (MFGs) with Dirichlet boundary conditions. While for Hamilton--Jacobi equations Dirichlet conditions may not be satisfied, here, we establish the existence of solutions of MFGs that satisfy those conditions. To construct these solutions, we introduce a monotone regularized problem. Applying Schaefer's fixed-point theorem and using the monotonicity of the MFG, we verify that there exists a unique weak solution to the regularized problem. Finally, we take the limit of the solutions of the regularized problem and using Minty's method, we show the existence of weak solutions to the original MFG.

Bending-torsion moments in thin multi-structures in the context of nonlinear elasticity

Here, we address a dimension-reduction problem in the context of nonlinear elasticity where the applied external surface forces induce bending-torsion moments. The underlying body is a multi-structure in $\mathbb{R}^3$ consisting of a thin tube-shaped domain placed upon a thin plate-shaped domain. The problem involves two small parameters, the radius of the cross-section of the tube-shaped domain and the thickness of the plate-shaped domain. We characterize the different limit models, including the limit junction condition, in the membrane-string regime according to the ratio between these two parameters as they converge to zero.

First-order, stationary mean-field games with congestion

Mean-field games (MFGs) are models for large populations of competing rational agents that seek to optimize a suitable functional. In the case of congestion, this functional takes into account the difficulty of moving in high-density areas. Here, we study stationary MFGs with congestion with quadratic or power-like Hamiltonians. First, using explicit examples, we illustrate two main difficulties: the lack of classical solutions and the existence of areas with vanishing density. Our main contribution is a new variational formulation for MFGs with congestion. This formulation was not previously known, and, thanks to it, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions. Finally, we consider applications to numerical methods.
