The dynamics of the HIV infection: a time-delay differential equation approach

In this work we introduce a differential equation model with time-delay that describes the three-stage dynamics and the two time scales observed in HIV infection. Assuming that the virus has high mutation and rapid reproduction rates that stress the immune system throughout the successive activation of new responses to new undetectable strains, the delay term describes the time interval necessary to mount new specific immune responses. This single term increases the number of possible solutions and changes the phase space dynamics if compared to the model without time delay. We observe very slow transits near the unstable fixed point, corresponding to a healthy state, and long time decay to the stable fixed point that corresponds to the infected state. In contrast to the results obtained for models using regular ODE, which only allow for partial descriptions of the course of the infection, our model describes the entire course of infection observed in infected patients: the primary infection, the latency period and the onset of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The model also describes other scenarios, such as the very fast progression to the disease and the less common outcome in which, although the patient is exposed to HIV, he/she does not develop the disease.

On the Aging Dynamics in an Immune Network Model

Recently we have used a cellular automata model which describes the dynamics of a multi-connected network to reproduce the refractory behavior and aging effects obtained in immunization experiments performed with mice when subjected to multiple perturbations. In this paper we investigate the similarities between the aging dynamics observed in this multi-connected network and the one observed in glassy systems, by using the usual tools applied to analyze the latter. An interesting feature we show here is that the model reproduces the biological aspects observed in the experiments during the long transient time it takes to reach the stationary state. Depending on the initial conditions, and without any perturbation, the system may reach one of a family of long-period attractors. The pertrubations may drive the system from its natural attractor to other attractors of the same family. We discuss the different roles played by the small random perturbations (noise) and by the large periodic perturbations (immunizations).

Phase-Transitions in a model for the formation of herpes simplex ulcers

The critical properties of a cellular automaton model describing the spreading of infection of the Herpes Simplex Virus in corneal tissue are investigated through the dynamic Monte Carlo method. The model takes into account different cell susceptibilities to the viral infection, as suggested by experimental findings. In a two-dimensional square lattice, the sites are associated to two distinct types of cells, namely, permissive and resistant to the infection. While a permissive cell becomes infected in the presence of a single infected cell in its neighborhood, a resistant cell needs to be surrounded by at least R>1 infected or dead cells in order to become infected. The infection is followed by the death of the cells resulting in ulcers whose forms may be dendritic (self-limited clusters) or amoeboid (percolating clusters) depending on the degree of resistance R of the resistant cells as well as on the density of permissive cells in the healthy tissue. We show that a phase transition between these two regimes occurs only for R>=5 and, in addition, that the phase-transition is in the universality class of the ordinary percolation.
