I-surfaces with one T-singularity

We classify normal stable surfaces with $K_X^2 = 1$, $p_g = 2$ and $q=0$ with a unique singular point which is a non-canonical T-singularity, thus exhibiting two divisors in the main component and a new irreducible component of the moduli space of stable surfaces $\overline\gothM_{1,3}$.

Higher dimensional Clifford-Severi equalities

Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety, $a\colon X\rightarrow A$ a morphism to an abelian variety such that $\mathrm{Pic}^0(A)$ injects into $\mathrm{Pic}^0(X)$ and let $L$ be a line bundle on $X$; denote by $h^0_a(X,L)$ the minimum of $h^0(X,L\otimes a^*α)$ for $α\in \mathrm{Pic}^0(A)$. The so-called Clifford-Severi inequalities have been proven in arXiv:1303.3045 [math.AG] and arXiv:1606.03290 [math.AG]}; in particular, for any $L$ there is a lower bound for the volume given by: $$\mathrm{vol}(L)\ge n! h^0_a(X,L),$$ and, if $K_X-L$ is pseudoeffective, $$\mathrm{vol}(L)\ge 2n! h^0_a(X,L).$$ In this paper we characterize varieties and line bundles for which the above Clifford-Severi inequalities are equalities.

Linear systems on irregular varieties

Let $X$ be a normal complex projective variety, $T\subseteq X$ a subvariety, $a\colon X\rightarrow A$ a morphism to an abelian variety such that $\rm{Pic}^0(A)$ injects into $\rm{Pic}^0(T)$ and let $L$ be a line bundle on $X$. Denote by $X^{(d)}\to X$ the connected étale cover induced by the $d$-th multiplication map of $A$, by $T^{(d)} \subseteq X^{(d)}$ the preimage of $T$ and by $L^{(d)}$ the pull-back of $L$ to $X^{(d)}$. For $α\in \rm{Pic}^0(A)$ general, we study the restricted linear system $|L^{(d)}\otimes a^*α|_{|T^{(d)}}$: if for some $d$ this gives a generically finite map $φ^{(d)}$, we show that f $φ^{(d)}$ is independent of $α$ or $d$ sufficiently large and divisible, and is induced by the {\em eventual map} $φ\colon T\to Z$ such that $a_{|T}$ factorizes through $φ$. The generic value $h^0_a(X_{|T}, L)$ of $h^0(X_{|T}, L\otimesα)$ is called the {\em (restricted) continuous rank.} We prove that if $M$ is the pull back of an ample divisor of $A$, then $x\mapsto h^0_a(X_{|T}, L+xM)$ extends to a continuous function of $x\in\mathbb{R}$, which is differentiable except possibly at countably many points; when $X=T$ we compute the left derivative explicitly. In the case when $X$ and $T$ are smooth, combining the above results we prove Clifford-Severi type inequalities, i.e., geographical bounds of the form $$\rm{vol}_{X|T}(L)\geq C(m) h^0_a(X_{|T},L),$$ where $C(m)={\mathcal O}(m!)$.

$(p,d)$-elliptic curves of genus two

We study stable curves of arithmetic genus 2 which admit two morphisms of finite degree $p$, resp. $d$, onto smooth elliptic curves, with particular attention to the case $p$ prime.

The eventual paracanonical map of a variety of maximal Albanese dimension

Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety such that the Albanese map of $X$ is generically finite onto its image. Here we study the so-called eventual $m$-paracanonical map of $X$ (when $m=1$ we also assume $χ(K_X)>0$). We show that for $m=1$ this map behaves in a similar way to the canonical map of a surface of general type, while it is birational for $m>1$. We also describe it explicitly in several examples.

Gorenstein stable surfaces with $K_X^2 = 1$ and $p_g>0$

In this paper we consider Gorenstein stable surfaces with $K^2_X=1$ and positive geometric genus. Extending classical results, we show that such surfaces admit a simple description as weighted complete intersection. We exhibit a wealth of surfaces of all possible Kodaira dimensions that occur as normalisations of Gorenstein stable surfaces with $K_X^2=1$; for $p_g=2$ this leads to a rough stratification of the moduli space. Explicit non-Gorenstein examples show that we need further techniques to understand all possible degenerations.

Surfaces on the Severi line

Let S be a minimal complex surface of general type and of maximal Albanese dimension; by the Severi inequality one has $K^2_S\geq 4χ(\mathcal O_S)$. We prove that the equality $K^2_S=4χ(\mathcal O_S)$ holds if and only if $q(S):= h^1(\mathcal O_S)=2$ and the canonical model of $S$ is a double cover of the Albanese surface branched on an ample divisor with at most negligible singularities.

Godeaux surfaces with an Enriques involution and some stable degenerations

We give an explicit description of the Godeaux surfaces that admit an involution such that the quotient surface is birational to an Enriques surface; these surfaces give a 6-dimensional unirational irreducible subset of the moduli space of surfaces of general type. In addition, we describe the Enriques surfaces that are birational to the quotient of a Godeaux surface by an involution and we show that they give a 5-dimensional unirational irreducible subset of the moduli space of Enriques surfaces. Finally, by degenerating our description we obtain some examples of non-normal stable Godeaux surfaces.

Computing invariants of semi-log-canonical surfaces

We describe some methods to compute fundamental groups, (co)homology, and irregularity of semi-log-canonical surfaces. As an application, we show that there are exactly two irregular Gorenstein stable surfaces with $K^2=1$, both of which have $χ(X) = 0$ and $\mathrm{Pic}^0(X)=\mathbb{C}^*$ but different homotopy type.

Abelian varieties in Brill--Noether loci

In this paper, improving on results of Abramovich- Harris and Debarre- Fahlaoui we give the full classification of curves C of genus g such that a Brill--Noether locus W^ s_d(C), strictly contained in the jacobian J(C) of C, contains a variety Z stable under translations by the elements of a positive dimensional abelian subvariety A contained in J(C) and such that dim(Z)=d-dim(A)-2s, i.e., the maximum possible for such a Z.

Brill-Noether loci for divisors on irregular varieties

For a projective variety X, a line bundle L on X and r a natural number we consider the r-th Brill-Noether locus W^r(L,X):={η\in Pic^0(X)|h^0(L+η)\geq r+1}: we describe its natural scheme structure and compute the Zariski tangent space. If X is a smooth surface of maximal Albanese dimension and C is a curve on X, we define a Brill-Noether number ρ(C, r) and we prove, under some mild additional assumptions, that if ρ(C, r) is non negative then W^r(C,X) is nonempty of dimension bigger or equal to ρ(C,r). As an application, we derive lower bounds for h^0(K_D) for a divisor D that moves linearly on a smooth projective variety X of maximal Albanese dimension and inequalities for the numerical invariants of curves that do not move linearly on a surface of maximal Albanese dimension.

Continuous families of divisors, paracanonical systems and a new inequality for varieties of maximal Albanese dimension

Given a smooth complex projective variety X, a line bundle L of X an element v of H^1(O_X) and a section s in H^0(L) that deforms to first order in the direction v, we give a sufficient condition on v in terms of Koszul cohomology for this first order deformation to extend to an analytic deformation. We apply this result to improve known results on the paracanonical system of a variety of maximal Albanese dimension, due to Beauville in the case of surfaces and to Lazarsfeld-Popa in higher dimension. In particular, we prove the inequality p_g(X)>=χ(K_X)+q(X)-1 for a variety X of maximal Albanese dimension without irregular fibrations of Albanese general type.

A uniform bound on the canonical degree of Albanese defective curves on surfaces

Let S be a minimal complex surface of general type with irregularity q>=2 and let C be an irreducible curve of geometric genus g contained in S. Assume that C is "Albanese defective", i.e., that the image of C via the Albanese map does not generate the Albanese variety Alb(S); we obtain a linear upper bound in terms of K^2_S and g for the canonical degree K_SC of C. As a corollary, we obtain a bound for the canonical degree of curves with g<= q-1, thereby generalizing and sharpening the main result of [S.Y. Lu, On surfaces of general type with maximal Albanese dimension, J. Reine Angew. Math. 641 (2010), 163-175].

Non-normal abelian covers

An abelian cover is a finite morphism $X\to Y$ of varieties which is the quotient map for a generically faithful action of a finite abelian group $G$. Abelian covers with $Y$ smooth and $X$ normal were studied in \cite{Pardini_AbelianCovers}. Here we study the non-normal case, assuming that $X$ and $Y$ are $S_2$ varieties that have at worst normal crossings outside a subset of codimension $\ge 2$. Special attention is paid to the case of $\Z_2^r$-covers of surfaces, which is used in arxiv:0901.4431 to construct explicitly compactifications of some components of the moduli space of surfaces of general type.

On the canonical map of surfaces with q>=6

We carry out an analysis of the canonical system of a minimal complex surface of general type with irregularity q>0. Using this analysis we are able to sharpen in the case q>0 the well known Castelnuovo inequality K^2>=3p_g+q-7. Then we turn to the study of surfaces with p_g=2q-3 and no fibration onto a curve of genus >1. We prove that for q>=6 the canonical map is birational. Combining this result with the analysis of the canonical system, we also prove the inequality: K^2>=7χ+2. This improves an earlier result of the first and second author [M.Mendes Lopes and R.Pardini, On surfaces with p_g=2q-3, Adv. in Geom. 10 (3) (2010), 549-555].
