Comprehensive Characterization of InGaAs/InP Avalanche Photodiodes at 1550 nm with an Active Quenching ASIC

We present an active quenching application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), for use in conjunction with InGaAs/InP avalanche photodiodes (APDs), for 1550 nm single-photon detection. To evaluate its performance, we first compare its operation with that of standard quenching electronics. We then test 4 InGaAs/InP APDs using the ASIC, operating both in the free-running and gated modes, to study more general behavior. We investigate not only the standard parameters under different working conditions but also parameters such as charge persistence and quenching time. We also use the multiple trapping model to account for the afterpulsing behavior in the gated mode, and further propose a model to take account of the afterpulsing effects in the free-running mode. Our results clearly indicate that the performance of APDs with an on-chip quenching circuit significantly surpasses the conventional quenching electronics, and makes them suitable for practical applications, e.g., quantum cryptography.

High speed coherent one-way quantum key distribution prototype

We report the first real world implementation of a Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) system over a 43dB-loss transmission line in the Swisscom fibre optic network. The QKD system is capable of continuous and autonomous operation and uses the coherent one-way (COW) protocol. This system brings together three key concepts for future QKD systems: a simple high-speed protocol; high performance detection; and integration, both at the component level as well for connectivity with standard fibre networks. Here, we show laboratory and field trial results for this system. The full prototype version uses InGaAs/InP avalanche photodiodes (APDs) and was laboratory tested up to 150km, with a 10-hour exchange averaging around 2kbps of real-time distilled secret bits over 100km. In the field trials, we obtained average distribution rates, during 3 hours, of 2.5bps over a 43dB-loss line of 150km, when using superconducting single photon detectors (SSPDs).

High resolution optical time domain reflectometer based on 1.55um up-conversion photon-counting module

We implement a photon-counting Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) at 1.55um which exhibits a high 2-point resolution and a high accuracy. It is based on a low temporal-jitter photon-counting module at 1.55um. This detector is composed of a periodically poled Lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide, which provides a wavelength conversion from near infrared to visible light, and a low jitter silicon photon-counting detector. With this apparatus, we obtain centimetre resolution over a measurement range of tens of kilometres.

Quantum Communication

Quantum communication, and indeed quantum information in general, has changed the way we think about quantum physics. In 1984 and 1991, the first protocol for quantum cryptography and the first application of quantum non-locality, respectively, attracted a diverse field of researchers in theoretical and experimental physics, mathematics and computer science. Since then we have seen a fundamental shift in how we understand information when it is encoded in quantum systems. We review the current state of research and future directions in this new field of science with special emphasis on quantum key distribution and quantum networks.
