Information is not physical

The standard relations between information theory and thermodynamics are challenged. The Szilard engine is revisited and the bound proposed by Landauer is replaced by a different one which includes errors in information processing. Instead of equivalence, complementarity of information and thermodynamical entropy is advocated. Finally, the relations between error correction and self-replication of states which can carry information are discussed.

Work and energy gain of heat-pumped quantized amplifiers

We investigate heat-pumped single-mode amplifiers of quantized fields in high-Q cavities based on non-inverted two-level systems. Their power generation is shown to crucially depend on the capacity of the quantum state of the field to accumulate useful work. By contrast, the energy gain of the field is shown to be insensitive to its quantum state. Analogies and differences with masers are explored.

Work extraction via quantum nondemolition measurements of qubits in cavities: Non-Markovian effects

We show that frequent nondemolition measurements of a quantum system immersed in a thermal bath allow the extraction of work in a closed cycle from the system-bath interaction (correlation) energy, a hitherto unexploited work resource. It allows for work even if no information is gathered or the bath is at zero temperature, provided the cycle is within the bath memory time. The predicted work resource may be the basis of quantum engines embedded in a bath with long memory time, such as the electromagnetic bath of a high-Q cavity coupled to two-level systems.

Model of quantum measurement and thermodynamical cost of accuracy and stability of information processing

The quantum measurement problem is revisited and discussed in terms of a new solvable measurement model which basic ingredient is the quantum model of a controlled single-bit memory. The structure of this model involving strongly coupled spin and quantum harmonic oscillator allows to define stable pointer states as well-separated Gaussian states of the quantum oscillator and analyze the transition from quantum to classical regime. The relations between accuracy of measurement, stability of pointer states, effective temperature of joint thermal and quantum noise and minimal work needed to perform the bit-flip are derived. They differ from those based on the Landauer principle and are used to analyze thermodynamic efficiency of quantum Szilard engine and imply more realistic estimations of minimal amount of work needed to perform long computations.

Minimal universal quantum heat machine

In traditional thermodynamics the Carnot cycle yields the ideal performance bound of heat engines and refrigerators. We propose and analyze a minimal model of a heat machine that can play a similar role in quantum regimes. The minimal model consists of a single two-level system with periodically modulated energy splitting that is permanently, weakly, coupled to two spectrally-separated heat baths at different temperatures. The equation of motion allows to compute the stationary power and heat currents in the machine consistently with the second-law of thermodynamics. This dual-purpose machine can act as either an engine or a refrigerator (heat pump) depending on the modulation rate. In both modes of operation the maximal Carnot efficiency is reached at zero power. We study the conditions for finite-time optimal performance for several variants of the model. Possible realizations of the model are discussed.

Single-photon single-ion interaction in free space configuration in front of a parabolic mirror

The efficient interaction between single photons and single matter objects in free space is of key importance for quantum technologies. An experimental setup for testing this possibility involves single two-level ion trapped at the focus of a parabolic metallic mirror. We study the conditions for the setup, under which the assumption about the free-space mode structure of the radiation field in the vicinity of the atom is justified. In our analysis we apply vectorial properties of light by including polarization degree of freedom. We look for possible changes in the spontaneous emission rate of the atom resulting from the presence of the parabolic boundary conditions.

Extractable work from ensembles of quantum batteries. Entanglement helps

Motivated by the recent interest in thermodynamics of micro- and mesoscopic quantum systems we study the maximal amount of work that can be reversibly extracted from a quantum system used to store temporarily energy. Guided by the notion of passivity of a quantum state we show that entangling unitary controls extract in general more work than independent ones. In the limit of large number of copies one can reach the thermodynamical bound given by the variational principle for free energy.

Quantum memory as a perpetuum mobile? Stability v.s. reversibility of information processing

It is argued using a Gedankenexperiment that a scalable quantum memory could be used as a perpetuum mobile of the second kind and hence cannot be realized in Nature. The reasoning is based on the assumption that the Landauer's principle for measurements is a consequence of the second law of thermodynamics and not an independent postulate. This implies a modification of the Landauer's principle when applied for discrimination of equilibrium (metastable) states. While identification of the metastable state can be done at the infinitesimally low cost, a change of such a state involves dissipation of energy proportional to its stability factor.

Comments on "Cooling by Heating: Refrigerator Powered by Photons"

We comment that the model proposed in Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 120603 (2012) violates the dynamical version of the third law of thermodynamics. We discuses the different formulations of the third law of thermodynamics and suggest a possible reason for the violation.

Quantum bath refrigeration towards absolute zero: unattainability principle challenged

A minimal model of a quantum refrigerator (QR), i.e. a periodically phase-flipped two-level system permanently coupled to a finite-capacity bath (cold bath) and an infinite heat dump (hot bath), is introduced and used to investigate the cooling of the cold bath towards the absolute zero (T=0). Remarkably, the temperature scaling of the cold-bath cooling rate reveals that it does not vanish as T->0 for certain realistic quantized baths, e.g. phonons in strongly disordered media (fractons) or quantized spin-waves in ferromagnets (magnons). This result challenges Nernst's third-law formulation known as the unattainability principle.

Periodically driven quantum open systems: Tutorial

We present a short derivation and discussion of the master equation for an open quantum system weakly coupled to a heat bath and then its generalization to the case of with periodic external driving based on the Floquet theory. Further, a single heat bath is replaced by several ones. We present also the definition of heat currents which satisfies the second law of thermodynamics and apply the general results to a simple model of periodically modulated qubit.

Quantum Refrigerator and the III-law of Thermodynamics

The rate of temperature decrease of a cooled quantum bath is studied as its temperature is reduced to the absolute zero. The III-law of thermodynamics is then quantified dynamically by evaluating the characteristic exponent ζ of the cooling process dT(t)/dt \sim -T^ζ when approaching the absolute zero, T \rightarrow 0. A continuous model of a quantum refrigerator is employed consisting of a working medium composed either by two coupled harmonic oscillators or two coupled 2-level systems. The refrigerator is a nonlinear device merging three currents from three heat baths: a cold bath to be cooled, a hot bath as an entropy sink, and a driving bath which is the source of cooling power. A heat driven refrigerator (absorption refrigerator) is compared to a power driven refrigerator. When optimized both cases lead to the same exponent ζ, showing a lack of dependence on the form of the working medium and the characteristics of the drivers. The characteristic exponent is therefore determined by the properties of the cold reservoir and its interaction with the system. Two generic heat baths models are considered, a bath composed of harmonic oscillators and a bath composed from ideal Bose/Fermi gas. The restrictions on the interaction Hamiltonian imposed by the III-law are discussed. In the appendix the theory of periodicaly driven open systems and its implication to thermodynamics is outlined.

A resonance mechanism of efficient energy transfer mediated by Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex

The Wigner-Weisskopf-type model developed in [R. Alicki and F. Giraldi, J. Phys. B {\bf 44}, 154020 (2011)] is applied to the biological process of energy transfer from a large peripheral light harvesting antenna to the reaction center. This process is mediated by the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) photosynthetic complex with a remarkably high efficiency. The proposed model provides a simple resonance mechanism of this phenomenon employing exciton coherent motion and described by analytical formulas. A coupling to the vibrational environment is a necessary component of this mechanism as well as a fine tuning of the FMO complex Hamiltonian. The role of the relatively strong coupling to the energy sink in achieving the resonance condition and the absence of heating of the vibrational environment are emphasized.

A possible statistical mechanism of anomalous neutrino velocity in OPERA experiment?

The set of kinetic equations describing the process of conversion of a beam of protons into mesons and then to neutrinos is solved. The asymptotic evolution of the density profile of neutrinos is essentially the same as that obtained in the previous version of the note for a simple model of uniformly damped wave-packet. It shows again that the recently reported "superluminal neutrinos" could be considered as a purely statistical effect due to the fact that the detected neutrinos represent a biased sample of initial protons.

A quantum model of almost perfect energy transfer

The Wigner-Weisskopf-type model describing the energy transfer between two centers mediated by a continuum of energy levels is studied. This work is motivated by the recent interest in transport phenomena at nanoscale in biology and quantum engineering. The analytical estimation for the energy transfer efficiency is derived in the weak coupling regime and the conditions for the almost perfect transfer are discussed. The embedding of the standard tight-binding model into Wigner-Weisskopf one which includes the environmental noise is presented.

Flux qubits shed a new light on BCS theory and high-$T_c$ superconductivity

A simple microscopic model of a small superconducting loop interrupted by Josephson junction (flux qubit) allows to compute from the experimental data of Wal et.al \cite{Wal} an important parameter - the density of Cooper pairs at zero temperature. This density is determined by the cut-off energy in the BCS model and agrees with the original BCS suggestion but is lower by two orders of magnitude than the value accepted in the modern literature. The immediate consequences of this result are: the validity of the strong coupling BCS model, a plausible picture of electrons recombination into Cooper pairs, and a much weaker condition for the appearance of high-temperature superconductivity. Another consequence is that the popular interpretation of Josephson qubits as macroscopic quantum systems is replaced by a picture of qubit states being superpositions of the ground state and the state containing only a single excited Cooper pair.
