Geons and the Quantum Information Metric

We investigate the proposed duality between a quantum information metric in a $\mbox{CFT}_{d+1}$ and the volume of a maximum time slice in the dual $\mbox{AdS}_{d+2}$ for topological geons. Examining the specific cases of BTZ black holes and planar Schwarzschild-AdS black holes, along with their geon counterparts, we find that the proposed duality relation for geons is the same apart from a factor of 4. The information metric therefore provides a probe of the topology of the bulk spacetime.

Quintessential Quartic Quasi-topological Quartet

We construct the quartic version of generalized quasi-topological gravity, which was recently constructed to cubic order in arXiv: 1703.01631. This class of theories includes Lovelock gravity and a known form of quartic quasi-topological gravity as special cases and possess a number of remarkable properties: (i) In vacuum, or in the presence of suitable matter, there is a single independent field equation which is a total derivative. (ii) At the linearized level, the equations of motion on a maximally symmetric background are second order, coinciding with the linearized Einstein equations up to a redefinition of Newton's constant. Therefore, these theories propagate only the massless, transverse graviton on a maximally symmetric background. (iii) While the Lovelock and quasi-topological terms are trivial in four dimensions, there exist four new generalized quasi-topological terms (the quartet) that are nontrivial, leading to interesting higher curvature theories in $d \geq 4$ dimensions that appear well suited for holographic study. We construct four dimensional black hole solutions to the theory and study their properties. A study of black brane solutions in arbitrary dimensions reveals that these solutions are modified from the `universal' properties these solutions have. This result may lead to interesting consequences for the dual CFTs.

Holographic heat engines: general considerations and rotating black holes

We perform the first study of holographic heat engines where the working material is a rotating black hole, obtaining exact results for the efficiency of a rectangular engine cycle. We also make general considerations in the context of benchmarking these engines on circular cycles. We find an exact expression that is valid for black holes with vanishing specific heat at constant volume and derive an upper bound, below the Carnot efficiency and independent of spacetime dimension, which holds for any black hole of this kind. We illustrate our results with applications to a variety of black holes, noting the effects of spacetime dimension, rotation, and higher curvature corrections on the efficiency of the cycle.

Horizon avoidance in spherically-symmetric collapse

We study collapse of evaporating spherically-symmetric thin dust shells and dust balls assuming that quantum effects are encapsulated in a spherically-symmetric metric that satisfied mild regularity conditions. The evaporation may accelerate collapse, but for a generic metric the Schwarzschild radius is not crossed. Instead the shell (or the layer in the ball of dust) is always at a certain sub-Planckian distance from it.

Hairy black holes in cubic quasi-topological gravity

We construct a class of five dimensional black hole solutions to cubic quasi-topological gravity with conformal scalar hair and study their thermodynamics. We find these black holes provide the second example of black hole $λ$-lines: a line of second order (continuous) phase transitions, akin to the fluid/superfluid transition of $^4$He. Examples of isolated critical points are found for spherical black holes, marking the first in the literature to date. We also find various novel and interesting phase structures, including an isolated critical point occurring in conjunction with a double reentrant phase transition. The AdS vacua of the theory are studied, finding ghost-free configurations where the scalar field takes on a non-zero constant value, in notable contrast to the five dimensional Lovelock case.

Generalized quasi-topological gravity

We construct the most general, to cubic order in curvature, theory of gravity whose (most general) static spherically symmetric vacuum solutions are fully described by a single field equation. The theory possess the following remarkable properties: i) it has a well-defined Einstein gravity limit ii) it admits `Schwarzschild-like' solutions characterized by a single metric function iii) on maximally symmetric backgrounds it propagates the same degrees of freedom as Einstein's gravity iv) Lovelock and quasi-topological gravities, as well as the recently developed Einsteinian cubic gravity [ArXiv:1607.06463] in four dimensions, are recovered as special cases. We perform a brief analysis of asymptotically flat black holes in this theory and study their thermodynamics.

Cosmological Perturbations in the 5D Holographic Big Bang Model

The 5D Holographic Big Bang is a novel model for the emergence of the early universe out of a 5D collapsing star (an apparent white hole), in the context of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) cosmology. The model does not have a big bang singularity, and yet can address cosmological puzzles that are traditionally solved within inflationary cosmology. In this paper, we compute the exact power spectrum of cosmological curvature perturbations due to the effect of a thin atmosphere accreting into our 3-brane. The spectrum is scale-invariant on small scales and red on intermediate scales, but becomes blue on scales larger than the height of the atmosphere. While this behaviour is broadly consistent with the non-parametric measurements of the primordial scalar power spectrum, it is marginally disfavoured relative to a simple power law (at 2.7$σ$ level). Furthermore, we find that the best fit nucleation temperature of our 3-brane is at least 3 orders of magnitude larger than the 5D Planck mass, suggesting an origin in a 5D quantum gravity phase.

Emergent dark energy via decoherence in quantum interactions

In this work we consider a recent proposal in which gravitational interactions are mediated via classical information and apply it to a relativistic context. We study a toy model of a quantized Friedman-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe with the assumption that any test particles must feel a classical metric. We show that such a model results in decoherence in the FRW state that manifests itself as a dark energy fluid that fills the spacetime. Analysis of the resulting fluid, shows the equation of state asymptotically oscillates around the value $w=-1/3$, regardless of the spatial curvature, which provides the bound between accelerating and decelerating expanding FRW cosmologies. Motivated by quantum-classical interactions this model is yet another example of theories with violation of energy-momentum conservation whose signature could have significant consequences for the observable universe.

Thermodynamics of hairy black holes in Lovelock gravity

We perform a thorough study of the thermodynamic properties of a class of Lovelock black holes with conformal scalar hair arising from coupling of a real scalar field to the dimensionally extended Euler densities. We study the linearized equations of motion of the theory and describe constraints under which the theory is free from ghosts/tachyons. We then consider, within the context of black hole chemistry, the thermodynamics of the hairy black holes in the Gauss-Bonnet and cubic Lovelock theories. We clarify the connection between isolated critical points and thermodynamic singularities, finding a one parameter family of these critical points which occur for well-defined thermodynamic parameters. We also report on a number of novel results, including `virtual triple points' and the first example of a `$λ$-line'---a line of second order phase transitions---in black hole thermodynamics.

Classicality of a quantum oscillator

Gaussian quantum systems exhibit many explicitly quantum effects but can be simulated classically. Using both the Hilbert space (Koopman) and the phase-space (Moyal) formalisms we investigate how robust this classicality is. We find failures of consistency of the dynamics of a hybrid classical-quantum systems from both perspectives. By demanding that no unobservable operators couple to the quantum sector in the Koopmanian formalism, we show that the classical equations of motion act on their quantum counterparts without experiencing any back-reaction, resulting in non-conservation of energy in the quantum system. Using the phase-space formalism we study the short time evolution of the moment equations of a hybrid classical-Gaussian quantum system and observe violations of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Relation in the quantum sector for a broad range of initial conditions. We estimate the time scale for these violations, which is generically rather short. This inconsistency indicates that while many explicitly quantum effects can be represented classically, quantum aspects of the system cannot be fully masked. We comment on the implications of our results for quantum gravity.

Cavities in curved spacetimes: the response of particle detectors

We introduce a method to compute particle detector transition probability in spacetime regions of general curved spacetimes provided that the curvature is not above a maximum threshold. In particular we use this method to compare the response of two detectors, one in a spherically symmetric gravitational field and the other one in Rindler spacetime to compare the Unruh and Hawking effects: We study the vacuum response of a detector freely falling through a stationary cavity in a Schwarzschild background as compared with the response of an equivalently accelerated detector traveling through an inertial cavity in the absence of curvature. We find that as we set the cavity in further radiuses from the black hole, the thermal radiation measured by the detector approaches the quantity recorded by the detector in Rindler background showing in which way and at what scales the equivalent principle is recovered in the Hawking-Unruh effect. I.e. when the Hawking effect in a Schwarzschild background becomes equivalent to the Unruh effect in Rindler spacetime.

Unitarity, Feedback, Interactions -- Dynamics Emergent from Repeated Measurements

Motivated by the recent efforts to describe the gravitational interaction as a classical channel arising from continuous quantum measurements, we study what types of dynamics can emerge from a collisional model of repeated interactions between a system and a set of ancillae. We show that contingent on the model parameters the resulting dynamics ranges from exact unitarity to arbitrarily fast decoherence (quantum Zeno effect). For a series of measurements the effective dynamics includes feedback-control, which for a composite system yields effective interactions between the subsystems. We quantify the amount of decoherence accompanying such induced interactions, generalizing the lower bound found for the gravitational example. However, by allowing multipartite measurements, we show that interactions can be induced with arbitrarily low decoherence. These results have implications for gravity-inspired decoherence models. Moreover, we show how the framework can include terms beyond the usual second-order approximation, which can spark new quantum control or simulation protocols. Finally, within our simple approach we re-derive the quantum filtering equations for the different regimes of effective dynamics, which can facilitate new connections between different formulations of open systems.

Mode-Invisibility as a non-Destructive Probe of Entangled QUBIT-CAT States

We investigate the dynamics for a two level atomic system entangled to coherent states using the recently developed mode invisibility technique. Using a quantum 2-level probe, we demonstrate a way to non-destructively measure a number of properties between a qubit entangled with a generalized CAT state, including the amplitude of the coherent state, the location and relative excitation of the qubit, and the von Neumann entropy. Our results indicate a connection between this last quantity and the interferometric phase shift of the probe, thereby suggesting a possible way to experimentally measure entanglement non-destructively.

Purification in Rapid Repeated Interaction Systems

We investigate the open dynamics of a quantum system when it is rapidly repeatedly updated by a quantum channel. Specifically, we analyze when this dynamics can purify the system. We develop a necessary and sufficient condition for such purification effects to occur and characterize their strength. We thoroughly analyze the specific scenario of a quantum system undergoing rapid unitary interactions with a sequence of ancillary quantum systems. We find that while the purification effects are generally present, in order for these effects to be strong compared to the decoherence effects the interaction Hamiltonian must have a minimum degree of complexity. Specifically, a tensor product interaction $\hat{Q}_\text{S}\otimes\hat{R}_\text{A}$, as well as many common light-matter interactions cannot purify efficiently.

Effect of relativistic acceleration on localized two-mode Gaussian quantum states

We study how an arbitrary Gaussian state of two localized wave packets, prepared in an inertial frame of reference, is described by a pair of uniformly accelerated observers. We explicitly compute the resulting state for arbitrarily chosen proper accelerations of the observers and independently tuned distance between them. To do so, we introduce a generalized Rindler frame of reference and analytically derive the corresponding state transformation as a Gaussian channel. Our approach provides several new insights into the phenomenon of vacuum entanglement such as the highly non-trivial effect of spatial separation between the observers including sudden death of entanglement. We also calculate the fidelity of the two-mode channel for non-vacuum Gaussian states and obtain bounds on classical and quantum capacities of a single-mode channel. Our framework can be directly applied to any continuous variable quantum information protocol in which the effects of acceleration or gravity cannot be neglected.

Critical points in Lovelock Black Holes

We review some of the results obtained by introducing a thermodynamic pressure via the cosmological constant in a class of higher curvature theories known as Lovelock gravity. In particular, we focus on a specific relation between the higher-order Lovelock couplings that introduces a peculiar isolated critical point for hyperbolic black holes characterized by non-standard critical exponents.

Black holes in Einsteinian cubic gravity

Using numerical and perturbative methods, we construct the first examples of black hole solutions in Einsteinian cubic gravity and study their thermodynamics. Focusing first on four dimensional solutions, we show that these black holes have a novel equation of state in which the pressure is a quadratic function of the temperature. Despite this, they undergo a first order phase transition with associated van der Waals behaviour. We then construct perturbative solutions for general $D \ge 5$ and study the properties of these solutions for $D=5$ and $D=6$ in particular. We note that for $D >4$ the solutions are described by two independent metric functions. We find novel examples of super-entropic behaviour over a large portion of the parameter space. We analyse the specific heat, determining that the black holes are thermodynamically stable over large regions of parameter space.

Thermodynamic Volume of Cosmological Solitons

We present explicit expressions of the thermodynamic volume inside and outside the cosmological horizon of Eguchi-Hanson solitons in general odd dimensions. These quantities are calculable and well-defined regardless of whether or not the regularity condition for the soliton is imposed. For the inner case, we show that the reverse isoperimetric inequality is not satisfied for general values of the soliton parameter $a$, though a narrow range exists for which the inequality does hold. For the outer case, we find that the mass $M_{out}$ satisfies the maximal mass conjecture and the volume is positive. We also show that, by requiring $M_{out}$ to yield the mass of dS spacetime when the soliton parameter vanishes, the associated cosmological volume is always positive.
