Phases of Dense Quarks at Large N_c

In the limit of a large number of colors, N_c, we suggest that gauge theories can exhibit several distinct phases at nonzero temperature and quark density. Two are familiar: a cold, dilute phase of confined hadrons, where the pressure is ~ 1, and a hot phase of deconfined quarks and gluons, with pressure ~ N_c^2. When the quark chemical potential mu ~ 1, the deconfining transition temperature, T_d, is independent of mu. For T < T_d, as mu increases above the mass threshold, baryons quickly form a dense phase where the pressure is ~ N_c. As illustrated by a Skyrme crystal, chiral symmetry can be both spontaneously broken, and then restored, in the dense phase. While the pressure is ~ N_c, like that of (non-ideal) quarks, the dense phase is still confined, with interactions near the Fermi surface those of baryons, and not of quarks. Thus in the chirally symmetric region, baryons near the Fermi surface are parity doubled. We suggest possible implications for the phase diagram of QCD.

Effective Theory of Wilson Lines and Deconfinement

To study the deconfining phase transition at nonzero temperature, I outline the perturbative construction of an effective theory for straight, thermal Wilson lines. Certain large, time dependent gauge transformations play a central role. They imply the existence of interfaces, which can be used to determine the form of the effective theory as a gauged, nonlinear sigma model of adjoint matrices. Especially near the transition, the Wilson line may undergo a Higgs effect. As an adjoint field, this can generate eigenvalue repulsion in the effective theory.

Fuzzy Bags and Wilson Lines

I start with an elementary observation about the pressure in the deconfined phase of a SU(3) gauge theory without quarks. This suggests a ``fuzzy'' bag model for the analogous pressure in QCD, with dynamical quarks. I then sketch how the deconfined phase might be described using an effective theory of Wilson lines. To leading order in weak coupling, the effective electric field appears in a form familiar from the lattice theory of Banks and Ukawa.

Beta-functions for a SU(2) Matrix Model in 2 + epsilon Dimensions

To investigate the non-perturbative, electric sector of a deconfined gauge theory at nonzero temperature, we consider a SU(2) matrix model. We compute beta-functions to one loop order for the simplest extension of the O(4) nonlinear sigma model, which involves three coupling constants. Computing in the ultraviolet limit in 2 + epsilon dimensions, we find that at least one coupling is not asymptotically free.

Cold, dense nuclear matter in a SU(2) parity doublet model

We study dense nuclear matter and the chiral phase transition in a SU(2) parity doublet model at zero temperature. The model is defined by adding the chiral partner of the nucleon, the N', to the linear sigma model, treating the mass of the N' as an unknown free parameter. The parity doublet model gives a reasonable description of the properties of cold nuclear matter, and avoids unphysical behaviour present in the standard SU(2) linear sigma model. If the N' is identified as the N'(1535), the parity doublet model shows a first order phase transition to a chirally restored phase at large densities, $ρ\approx 10 ρ_0$, defining the transition by the degeneracy of the masses of the nucleon and the N'. If the mass of the N' is chosen to be 1.2 GeV, then the critical density of the chiral phase transition is lowered to three times normal nuclear matter density, and for physical values of the pion mass, the first order transition turns into a smooth crossover.

Dense Quarks, and the Fermion Sign Problem, in a SU(N) Matrix Model

We study the effect of dense quarks in a SU(N) matrix model of deconfinement. For three or more colors, the quark contribution to the loop potential is complex. After adding the charge conjugate loop, the measure of the matrix integral is real, but not positive definite. In a matrix model, quarks act like a background Z(N) field; at nonzero density, the background field also has an imaginary part, proportional to the imaginary part of the loop. Consequently, while the expectation values of the loop and its complex conjugate are both real, they are not equal. These results suggest a possible approach to the fermion sign problem in lattice QCD.

Deconfinement in Matrix Models about the Gross--Witten Point

We study the deconfining phase transition in SU(N) gauge theories at nonzero temperature using a matrix model of Polyakov loops. The most general effective action, including all terms up to two spatial derivatives, is presented. At large N, the action is dominated by the loop potential: following Aharony et al., we show how the Gross--Witten model represents an ultra-critical point in this potential. Although masses vanish at the Gross--Witten point, the transition is of first order, as the fundamental loop jumps only halfway to its perturbative value. Comparing numerical analysis of the N=3 matrix model to lattice simulations, for three colors the deconfining transition appears to be near the Gross--Witten point. To see if this persists for N >= 4, we suggest measuring within a window ~1/N^2 of the transition temperature.

Deconfining Phase Transition as a Matrix Model of Renormalized Polyakov Loops

We discuss how to extract renormalized from bare Polyakov loops in SU(N) lattice gauge theories at nonzero temperature in four spacetime dimensions. Single loops in an irreducible representation are multiplicatively renormalized without mixing, through a renormalization constant which depends upon both representation and temperature. The values of renormalized loops in the four lowest representations of SU(3) were measured numerically on small, coarse lattices. We find that in magnitude, condensates for the sextet and octet loops are approximately the square of the triplet loop. This agrees with a large $N$ expansion, where factorization implies that the expectation values of loops in adjoint and higher representations are just powers of fundamental and anti-fundamental loops. For three colors, numerically the corrections to the large $N$ relations are greatest for the sextet loop, $\leq 25%$; these represent corrections of $\sim 1/N$ for N=3. The values of the renormalized triplet loop can be described by an SU(3) matrix model, with an effective action dominated by the triplet loop. In several ways, the deconfining phase transition for N=3 appears to be like that in the $N=\infty$ matrix model of Gross and Witten.

Theory at Quark Matter '02

I summarize theory at Quark Matter 2002, stressing the continuing inability of a single model to describe all notable features of the data from $\sqrt{s}/A: 55 \to 200$ GeV.

Two-point functions for SU(3) Polyakov Loops near T_c

We discuss the behavior of two point functions for Polyakov loops in a SU(3) gauge theory about the critical temperature, T_c. From a Z(3) model, in mean field theory we obtain a prediction for the ratio of masses at T_c, extracted from correlation functions for the imaginary and real parts of the Polyakov loop. This ratio is m_i/m_r = 3 if the potential only includes terms up to quartic order in the Polyakov loop; its value changes as pentic and hexatic interactions become important. The Polyakov Loop Model then predicts how m_i/m_r changes above T_c.

Notes on the Deconfining Phase Transition

I review the deconfining phase transition in an SU(N) gauge theory without quarks. After computing the interface tension between Z(N) degenerate vacua deep in the deconfined phase, I follow Giovannangeli and Korthals Altes, and suggest a new model for (discrete) Polyakov loop spins. Effective theories for (continuous) Polyakov loop spins are constructed, including those with Z(N) charge greater than one, and compared with Lattice data. About the deconfining transition, the expectation values of Z(N) singlet fields (``quarkless baryons'') may change markedly. Speculations include: a possible duality between Polyakov loop and ordinary spins in four dimensions, and how Z(N) bubbles might be guaranteed to have positive pressure.

Tests of the Polyakov Loops Model

I give a brief review of the Polyakov Loops Model and tests thereof. I concentrate especially on how in a pure SU(N) gauge theory, Polyakov loops with Z(N) charges two and three affect the effective potential for charge-one loops.

Test of the Polyakov Loop Model

We discuss the two point functions for the real and imaginary parts of the Polyakov loop in a pure SU(3) gauge theory. The behavior of these correlation functions in the Polyakov Loop Model is markedly different from that in perturbation theory.

New Class of Compact Stars at High Density

We discuss the equation of state for cold, dense quark matter in perturbation theory, and how it might match onto that of hadronic matter. Certain choices of the renormalization scale correspond to a strongly first order chiral transition, and may generate a new class of small and very dense quark stars. The results for the mass-radius relation are compatible with the recent determination of the mass and the radius of an isolated neutron star by Pons et al.

Degrees of Freedom and the Deconfining Phase Transition

There is a sharp increase in the relative number of degrees of freedom at the deconfining phase transition. Characterizing this increase using the Polyakov Loop model, we find that for a nearly second order deconfining phase transition, the medium-induced energy loss turns on rapidly above T_c, proportional to the relative number of degrees of freedom. Further, energy loss is logarithmically dependent on the screening mass, and thus is sensitive to nearly critical scattering.

Event-by-Event Fluctuations from Decay of a Polyakov Loop Condensate

A model for particle production at the deconfining phase transition in QCD is developed, as the semi-classical decay of a condensate for the Polyakov loop. In such a model, generically particle production, as measured on an event-by-event basis, exhibits significant deviations from statistical behavior.

Explosive Collisions at RHIC?

Motivated by experimental results from RHIC, we suggest how a condensate for the Polyakov loop might produce explosive behavior at the QCD phase transition. This is due to a rapid rollover of the condensate field below the transition temperature.

Why the Quark-Gluon Plasma isn't a Plasma

An alternate picture of the deconfined phase of gauge theories is described. Instead of a plasma, the theory is viewed as a condensate of Polyakov lines. The pressure is determined by an elementary mean field theory.
