The Phase Space of Gravity on Null Hypersurfaces

We construct the bulk kinematical Poisson structure of general relativity on a caustic-free null segment, prior to imposing the Raychaudhuri and Damour constraints. We first show that shifts of the Ehresmann connection, also known as Carroll boosts, are pure gauge in gravity. This allows the Ehresmann connection to be fixed as a background structure and leads to the prime phase space of null gravitational data. The resulting phase space comprises of a spin-0 pair that includes the area and its conjugate, a spin-1 pair including the null direction and its conjugate, and the spin-2 sector encoded in the unimodular transverse metric. We then construct the brackets through a three-stage Dirac reduction implementing a normalization, horizontality, and shear constraints. We find that the spin-2 bracket is non-local and involves an antisymmetric Green kernel for a first-order transport operator along the null generators. The self-brackets of the spin-0 and spin-1 momenta involve, respectively, the vertical and horizontal derivatives of the transverse metric contracted with the spin-2 propagator. We finally provide an independent derivation of the brackets from the explicit realization of the Hamiltonian vector fields of the symplectic form. These results provide the classical canonical arena for studying the null constraint algebra, observables, and quantization.

Weyl-Ambient Geometries

Weyl geometry is a natural extension of conformal geometry with Weyl covariance mediated by a Weyl connection. We generalize the Fefferman-Graham (FG) ambient construction for conformal manifolds to a corresponding construction for Weyl manifolds. We first introduce the Weyl-ambient metric motivated by the Weyl-Fefferman-Graham (WFG) gauge. From a top-down perspective, we show that the Weyl-ambient space as a pseudo-Riemannian geometry induces a codimension-2 Weyl geometry. Then, from a bottom-up perspective, we start from promoting a conformal manifold into a Weyl manifold by assigning a Weyl connection to the principal $\mathbb{R}_+$-bundle realizing a Weyl structure. We show that the Weyl structure admits a well-defined initial value problem, which determines the Weyl-ambient metric. Through the Weyl-ambient construction, we also investigate Weyl-covariant tensors on the Weyl manifold and define extended Weyl-obstruction tensors explicitly.

The Problem of Time and its Quantum Resolution

In this essay, we argue that the problem of time should not be regarded as an issue to be resolved within the prevailing framework for studying quantum gravity, but rather as an indication that there is an issue within the framework itself. We suggest a possible resolution inspired by the observation that the quantization of gravity on null hypersurfaces leads to an anomaly, in that the constraint algebra is projectively represented in the quantum theory. We describe how accommodating these anomalies forces the theory to replace the standard interpretation of canonical time evolution with a fully quantum, diffeomorphism invariant notion of time. The full theory admits states that can be interpreted as emergent geometric spacetime regions which we refer to as quantum diamonds.

Quantum Null Geometry and Gravity

In this work, we demonstrate that quantizing gravity on a null hypersurface leads to the emergence of a CFT associated with each null ray. This result stems from the ultralocal nature of null physics and is derived through a canonical analysis of the Raychaudhuri equation, interpreted as a constraint generating null time reparametrizations. The CFT exhibits a non-zero central charge, providing a mechanism for the quantum emergence of time in gravitational systems and an associated choice of vacuum state. Our analysis reveals that the central charge quantifies the degrees of freedom along each null ray. Throughout our investigation, the area element of a cut plays a crucial role, necessitating its treatment as a quantum operator due to its dynamic nature in phase space or because of quantum backreaction. Furthermore, we show that the total central charge diverges in a perturbative analysis due to the infinite number of null generators. This divergence is resolved if there is a discrete spectrum for the area form operator. We introduce the concept of `embadons' to denote these localized geometric units of area, the fundamental building blocks of geometry at a mesoscopic quantum gravity scale.

A Lindbladian for exact renormalization of density operators in QFT

In arXiv:1609.03493, the authors extended the exact renormalization group (ERG) to arbitrary wave-functionals in quantum field theory (QFT). Applying this formalism, we show that the ERG flow of density matrices is given by a Lindblad master equation. The Lindbladian consists of a "Hamiltonian" term which is the sum of a scaling and a coarse-graining (disentangling) operator, and a dissipative term with absorption and emission rates for each momentum mode. We consider as examples the flow of Gaussian states and the perturbative ground state of $λϕ^4$ theory, and highlight the role of the dissipative terms in generating the correct flow of couplings. Integrating the Lindblad master equation, we find that a finite ERG flow of density matrices is described by a quantum channel. It follows from the data processing inequality that any distinguishability measure of states is an ERG monotone.

Relational Quantum Geometry

A common feature of the extended phase space of gauge theory, the crossed product of quantum theory, and quantum reference frames (QRFs) is the adjoining of degrees of freedom followed by a constraining procedure for the resulting total system. Building on previous work, we identify non-commutative or quantum geometry as a mathematical framework which unifies these three objects. We first provide a rigorous account of the extended phase space, and demonstrate that it can be regarded as a classical principal bundle with a Poisson manifold base. We then show that the crossed product is a trivial quantum principal bundle which both substantiates a conjecture on the quantization of the extended phase space and facilitates a relational interpretation. Combining several crossed products with possibly distinct structure groups into a single object, we arrive at a novel definition of a quantum orbifold. We demonstrate that change of frame maps within the quantum orbifold correspond to quantum gauge transformations, which are QRF preserving maps between crossed product algebras. Finally, we conclude that the quantum orbifold is equivalent to the G-framed algebra proposed in prior work, thereby placing systems containing multiple QRFs squarely in the context of quantum geometry.

Quantum Reference Frames from Top-Down Crossed Products

All physical observations are made relative to a reference frame, which is a system in its own right. If the system of interest admits a group symmetry, the reference frame observing it must transform commensurately under the group to ensure the covariance of the combined system. We point out that the crossed product is a way to realize quantum reference frames from the bottom-up; adjoining a quantum reference frame and imposing constraints generates a crossed product algebra. We provide a top-down specification of crossed product algebras and show that one cannot obtain inequivalent quantum reference frames using this approach. As a remedy, we define an abstract algebra associated to the system and symmetry group built out of relational crossed product algebras associated with different choices of quantum reference frames. We term this object the G-framed algebra, and show how potentially inequivalent frames are realized within this object. We comment on this algebra's analog of the classical Gribov problem in gauge theory, its importance in gravity where we show that it is relevant for semiclassical de Sitter and potentially beyond the semiclassical limit, and its utility for understanding the frame-dependence of physical notions like observables, density states, and entropies.

Crossed Products, Conditional Expectations and Constraint Quantization

Recent work has highlighted the importance of crossed products in correctly elucidating the operator algebraic approach to quantum field theories. In the gravitational context, the crossed product simultaneously promotes von Neumann algebras associated with subregions in diffeomorphism covariant quantum field theories from type III to type II, and provides the necessary ingredients to gravitationally dress operators, thereby enforcing the constraints of the theory. In this note we enhance the crossed product construction to the context of general gauge theories with arbitrary combinations of internal and spacetime local symmetries. This is done by leveraging the correspondence between the crossed product and the extended phase space. We then undertake a detailed study of constraint quantization from the perspective of a generic crossed product algebra. We study and compare four distinct approaches to constraint quantization from this point of view: refined algebraic quantization, BRST quantization, path integral quantization, and the commutation theorem for crossed products. Far from simply reproducing existing analyses, the operator algebraic viewpoint sheds new light on old problems by reformulating the dressing of operators in terms of conditional expectations and other closely related projection maps. We conclude by applying our approach to the constraint quantization of three distinct gauge theories including a discussion of gravity on null hypersurfaces.

Exact Renormalization of Wave Functionals yields Continuous MERA

The exact renormalization group (ERG) is a powerful tool for understanding the formal properties of field theories. By adapting generalized ERG schemes to the flow of wavefunctionals, we obtain a large class of continuous unitary networks, a special case of which includes a class of Gaussian continuous Multi-scale Renormalization Ansatzes (cMERAs). The novel feature of these generalized wavefunctional ERG schemes is allowing for modifications of the dispersion relation, which drastically changes the entanglement structure of the ultraviolet states. Through our construction, we demonstrate that cMERA can be derived from a more fundamental "microscopic" principle, which amounts to the usual RG principle of path integral independence, suitably adapted to quantum states of the field theory. The establishment of such a principle may provide a path forward for exploring cMERA beyond the free field regime, and for understanding the nature of entanglement renormalization intrinsically in the continuum.

Crossed Products, Extended Phase Spaces and the Resolution of Entanglement Singularities

We identify a direct correspondence between the crossed product construction which plays a crucial role in the theory of Type III von Neumann algebras, and the extended phase space construction which restores the integrability of non-zero charges generated by gauge symmetries in the presence of spatial substructures. This correspondence provides a blue-print for resolving singularities which are encountered in the computation of entanglement entropy for subregions in quantum field theories. The extended phase space encodes quantities that would be regarded as `pure gauge' from the perspective of the full theory, but are nevertheless necessary for gluing together, in a path integral sense, physics in different subregions. These quantities are required in order to maintain gauge covariance under such gluings. The crossed product provides a consistent method for incorporating these necessary degrees of freedom into the operator algebra associated with a given subregion. In this way, the extended phase space completes the subregion algebra and subsequently allows for the assignment of a meaningful, finite entropy to states therein.

Null Raychaudhuri: Canonical Structure and the Dressing Time

We initiate a study of gravity focusing on generic null hypersurfaces, non-perturbatively in the Newton coupling. We present an off-shell account of the extended phase space of the theory, which includes the expected spin-2 data as well as spin-0, spin-1 and arbitrary matter degrees of freedom. We construct the charges and the corresponding kinematic Poisson brackets, employing a Beltrami parameterization of the spin-2 modes. We explicitly show that the constraint algebra closes, the details of which depend on the non-perturbative mixing between spin-0 and spin-2 modes. Finally we show that the spin zero sector encodes a notion of a clock, called dressing time, which is dynamical and conjugate to the constraint. It is well-known that the null Raychaudhuri equation describes how the geometric data of a null hypersurface evolve in null time in response to gravitational radiation and external matter. Our analysis leads to three complementary viewpoints on this equation. First, it can be understood as a Carrollian stress tensor conservation equation. Second, we construct spin-$0$, spin-$2$ and matter stress tensors that act as generators of null time reparametrizations for each sector. This leads to the perspective that the null Raychaudhuri equation can be understood as imposing that the sum of CFT-like stress tensors vanishes. Third, we solve the Raychaudhuri constraint non-perturbatively. The solution relates the dressing time to the spin-$2$ and matter boost charge operators. Finally we establish that the corner charge corresponding to the boost operator in the dressing time frame is monotonic. These results show that the notion of an observer can be thought of as emerging from the gravitational degrees of freedom themselves. We briefly mention that the construction offers new insights into focusing conjectures.

BRST Cohomology is Lie Algebroid Cohomology

In this paper we demonstrate that the exterior algebra of an Atiyah Lie algebroid generalizes the familiar notions of the physicist's BRST complex. To reach this conclusion, we develop a general picture of Lie algebroid isomorphisms as commutative diagrams between algebroids preserving the geometric structure encoded in their brackets. We illustrate that a necessary and sufficient condition for such a diagram to define a morphism of Lie algebroid brackets is that the two algebroids possess gauge-equivalent connections. This observation indicates that the aforementioned set of Lie algebroid isomorphisms should be regarded as equivalent to the set of local diffeomorphisms and gauge transformations. Moreover, a Lie algebroid isomorphism being a chain map in the exterior algebra sense ensures that isomorphic algebroids are cohomologically equivalent. The Atiyah Lie algebroids derived from principal bundles with common base manifolds and structure groups may therefore be divided into equivalence classes of isomorphic algebroids. Each equivalence class possesses a local representative which we refer to as the trivialized Lie algebroid, and we show that the exterior algebra of the trivialized algebroid gives rise to the BRST complex. We conclude by illustrating the usefulness of Lie algebroid cohomology in computing quantum anomalies, including applications to the chiral and Lorentz-Weyl (LW) anomalies. In particular, we pay close attention to the fact that the geometric intuition afforded by the Lie algebroid (which was absent in the naive BRST complex) provides hints of a deeper picture that simultaneously geometrizes the consistent and covariant forms of the anomaly. In the algebroid construction, the difference between the consistent and covariant anomalies is simply a different choice of basis.

Extended Phase Space in General Gauge Theories

In a recent paper, it was shown that in diffeomorphism-invariant theories, Noether charges associated with a given codimension-2 surface become integrable if one introduces an extended phase space. In this paper we extend the notion of extended phase space to all gauge theories with arbitrary combinations of internal and spacetime local symmetries. We formulate this in terms of a corresponding Atiyah Lie algebroid, a geometric object derived from a principal bundle which features internal symmetries and diffeomorphisms on an equal footing. In this language, gauge transformations are understood as morphisms between Atiyah Lie algebroids that preserve the geometric structures encoded therein. The extended configuration space of a gauge theory can subsequently be understood as the space of pairs $(φ, Φ)$, where $φ$ is a Lie algebroid morphism and $Φ$ is a field configuration in the non-extended sense. Starting from this data, we outline a very powerful, manifestly geometric approach to the extended phase space. Using this approach, we find that the action of the group of gauge transformations and diffeomorphisms on the symplectic geometry of any covariant theory is integrable. We motivate our construction by carefully examining the need for extended phase space in Chern-Simons gauge theories and display its usefulness by re-computing the charge algebra. We also describe the implementation of the configuration algebroid in Einstein-Yang-Mills theories.

The Vacuum Energy Density and Gravitational Entropy

The failure to calculate the vacuum energy is a central problem in theoretical physics. Presumably the problem arises from the insistent use of effective field theory reasoning in a context that is well beyond its intended scope. If one follows this path, one is led inevitably to statistical or anthropic reasoning for observations. It appears that a more palatable resolution of the vacuum energy problem requires some form of UV/IR feedback. In this paper we take the point of view that such feedback can be thought of as arising by defining a notion of quantum space-time. We reformulate the regularized computation of vacuum energy in such a way that it can be interpreted in terms of a sum over elementary phase space volumes, that we identify with a ground state degeneracy. This observation yields a precise notion of UV/IR feedback, while leaving a scale unfixed. Here we argue that holography can be thought to provide a key piece of information: we show that equating this microscopic ground state degeneracy with macroscopic gravitational entropy yields a prediction for the vacuum energy that can easily be consistent with observations. Essentially, the smallness of the vacuum energy is tied to the large size of the Universe. We discuss how within this scenario notions of effective field theory can go so wrong.

On the Inevitable Lightness of Vacuum

In this essay, we present a new understanding of the cosmological constant problem, built upon the realization that the vacuum energy density can be expressed in terms of a phase space volume. We introduce a UV-IR regularization which implies a relationship between the vacuum energy and entropy. Combining this insight with the holographic bound on entropy then yields a bound on the cosmological constant consistent with observations. It follows that the universe is large, and the cosmological constant is naturally small, because the universe is filled with a large number of degrees of freedom.

Universal Corner Symmetry and the Orbit Method for Gravity

A universal symmetry algebra organizing the gravitational phase space has been recently found. It corresponds to the subset of diffeomorphisms that become physical at corners -- codimension-$2$ surfaces supporting Noether charges. It applies to both finite distance and asymptotic corners. In this paper, we study this algebra and its representations, via the coadjoint orbit method. We show that generic orbits of the universal algebra split into sub-orbits spanned by finite distance and asymptotic corner symmetries, such that the full universal symmetry algebra gives rise to a unified treatment of corners in a manifold. We then identify the geometric structure that captures these algebraic properties on corners, which is the Atiyah Lie algebroid associated to a principal $GL(2,\mathbb{R})\ltimes \mathbb{R}^2$-bundle. This structure is suggestive of the existence of a novel quantum gravitational theory which would unitarily glue such geometric structures, with spacetime geometries appearing as semi-classical configurations.

Quantum Gravity Phenomenology in the Infrared

Quantum gravity effects are traditionally tied to short distances and high energies. In this essay we argue that, perhaps surprisingly, quantum gravity may have important consequences for the phenomenology of the infrared. We center our discussion around a conception of quantum gravity involving a notion of quantum spacetime that arises in metastring theory. This theory allows for an evolution of a cosmological Universe in which string-dual degrees of freedom decouple as the Universe ages. Importantly such an implementation of quantum gravity allows for the inclusion of a fundamental length scale without introducing the fundamental breaking of Lorentz symmetry. The mechanism seems to have potential for an entirely novel source for dark matter/energy. The simplest observational consequences of this scenario may very well be residual infrared modifications that emerge through the evolution of the Universe.

Embeddings and Integrable Charges for Extended Corner Symmetry

We revisit the problem of extending the phase space of diffeomorphism-invariant theories to account for embeddings associated with the boundary of sub-regions. We do so by emphasizing the importance of a careful treatment of embeddings in all aspects of the covariant phase space formalism. In so doing we introduce a new notion of the extension of field space associated with the embeddings which has the important feature that the Noether charges associated with all extended corner symmetries are in fact integrable, but not necessarily conserved. We give an intuitive understanding of this description. We then show that the charges give a representation of the extended corner symmetry via the Poisson bracket, without central extension.
