Self-Supervised Multi-Modal World Model with 4D Space-Time Embedding

We present DeepEarth, a self-supervised multi-modal world model with Earth4D, a novel planetary-scale 4D space-time positional encoder. Earth4D extends 3D multi-resolution hash encoding to include time, efficiently scaling across the planet over centuries with sub-meter, sub-second precision. Multi-modal encoders (e.g. vision-language models) are fused with Earth4D embeddings and trained via masked reconstruction. We demonstrate Earth4D's expressive power by achieving state-of-the-art performance on an ecological forecasting benchmark. Earth4D with learnable hash probing surpasses a multi-modal foundation model pre-trained on substantially more data. Derangements in finite classical groups and characteristic polynomials of random matrices

We first obtain explicit upper bounds for the proportion of elements in a finite classical group G with a given characteristic polynomial. We use this to complete the proof that the proportion of elements of a finite classical group G which lie in a proper irreducible subgroup tends to 0 as the dimension of the natural module goes to infinity. This result is analogous to the result of Luczak and Pyber [15] that the proportion of elements of the symmetric group S_n which are contained in a proper transitive subgroup other than the alternating group goes to 0 as n goes to infinity. We also show that the probability that 3 random elements of SL(n,q) invariably generate goes to 0 as n goes to infinity.

Characters, Hall subgroups, and Normal Complements

If $H$ is a Hall subgroup of a finite group $G$, it was proven in 1989 using the classification of finite simple groups that all the irreducible complex characters of $H$ extend to $G$ if and only if there is $N\trianglelefteq G$ such that $HN=G$ and $H\cap N=1$. In this note we offer a modular version of this result under more general hypothesis.

Closure of Certain Matrix Varieties and Applications

We prove some results about closures of certain matrix varieties consisting of elements with the same centralizer dimension. This generalizes a result of Dixmier and has applications to topological generation of simple algebraic groups.

Strongly dense free subgroups of semisimple algebraic groups II

It was shown in Part I that there exist strongly dense free subgroups in any semisimple algebraic group over a large enough field. These are nonabelian free subgroups all of whose subgroups are either cyclic or Zariski-dense. Here we show that the same is true for as long as the transcendence degree of the field is at least $1$ in characteristic zero and at least $2$ in positive characteristic. We also consider related questions for surface groups.

Enumeration of conjugacy classes in affine groups

We study the conjugacy classes of the classical affine groups. We derive generating functions for the number of classes analogous to formulas of Wall and the authors for the classical groups. We use these to get good upper bounds for the number of classes. These naturally come up as difficult cases in the study of the non-coprime k(GV) problem of Brauer.

Cohen Lenstra Partitions and Mutually Annihilating Matrices over a Finite Field

Motivated by questions in algebraic geometry, Yifeng Huang recently derived generating functions for counting mutually annihilating matrices and mutually annihilating nilpotent matrices over a finite field. We give a different derivation of his results using statistical properties of random partitions chosen from the Cohen-Lenstra measure.

Real Constituents of Permutation Characters

We prove a broad generalization of a theorem of W. Burnside on real characters using permutation characters. Under a necessary hypothesis, We can give some control on multiplicities (a result that needs the Classification of Finite Simple Groups). Along the way, we also give a new characterization of the 2-closed finite groups using odd-order real elements of the group. All this can be seen as a contribution to Brauer's Problem 11. We also obtain similar results for 2-Brauer characters. We also classify finite primitive permutation groups in which every real element has a fixed point.

Centers of Sylow Subgroups and Automorphisms

Suppose that p is an odd prime and G is a finite group having no normal non-trivial p'-subgroup. We show that if a is an automorphism of G of p-power order centralizing a Sylow p-group of G, then a is inner. This answers a conjecture of Gross. An easy corollary is that if p is an odd prime and P is a Sylow p-subgroup of G, then the center of P is contained in the generalized Fitting subgroup of G. We give two proofs both requiring the classification of finite simple groups. For p=2, the result fails but Glauberman in 1968 proved that the square of a is inner. This answered a problem of Kourovka posed in 1999.

Endomorphism fields of abelian varieties

We give a sharp divisibility bound, in terms of g, for the degree of the field extension required to realize the endomorphisms of an abelian variety of dimension g over an arbitrary number field; this refines a result of Silverberg. This follows from a stronger result giving the same bound for the order of the component group of the Sato-Tate group of the abelian variety, which had been proved for abelian surfaces by Fite-Kedlaya-Rotger-Sutherland. The proof uses Minkowski's reduction method, but with some care required in the extremal cases when p equals 2 or a Fermat prime.

On base sizes for algebraic groups

Let $G$ be a permutation group on a set $Ω$. A subset of $Ω$ is a base for $G$ if its pointwise stabilizer is trivial; the base size of $G$ is the minimal cardinality of a base. In this paper we initiate the study of bases for algebraic groups defined over an algebraically closed field. In particular, we calculate the base size for all primitive actions of simple algebraic groups, obtaining the precise value in almost all cases. We also introduce and study two new base measures, which arise naturally in this setting. We give an application concerning the essential dimension of simple algebraic groups, and we establish several new results on base sizes for the corresponding finite groups of Lie type. The latter results are an important contribution to the classical study of bases for finite primitive permutation groups. We also indicate some connections with generic stabilizers for representations of simple algebraic groups.

Adequate subgroups and indecomposable modules

The notion of adequate subgroups was introduced by Jack Thorne [59]. It is a weakening of the notion of big subgroups used by Wiles and Taylor in proving automorphy lifting theorems for certain Galois representations. Using this idea, Thorne was able to strengthen many automorphy lifting theorems. It was shown in [22] and [23] that if the dimension is smaller than the characteristic then almost all absolutely irreducible representations are adequate. We extend the results by considering all absolutely irreducible modules in characteristic p of dimension p. This relies on a modified definition of adequacy, provided by Thorne in [60], which allows p to divide the dimension of the module. We prove adequacy for almost all irreducible representations of SL_2(p^a) in the natural characteristic and for finite groups of Lie type as long as the field of definition is sufficiently large. We also essentially classify indecomposable modules in characteristic p of dimension less than 2p-2 and answer a question of Serre concerning complete reducibility of subgroups in classical groups of low dimension.

Asymptotics of the number of involutions in finite classical groups

Answering a question of Geoff Robinson, we compute the large n limiting proportion of i(n,q)/q^[n^2/2], where i(n,q) denotes the number of involutions in GL(n,q). We give similar results for the finite unitary, symplectic, and orthogonal groups, in both odd and even characteristic. At the heart of this work are certain new "sum=product" identities. Our self-contained treatment of the enumeration of involutions in even characteristic symplectic and orthogonal groups may also be of interest.

Enumeration of Commuting Pairs in Lie Algebras over Finite Fields

Feit and Fine derived a generating function for the number of ordered pairs of commuting n by n matrices over the finite field F_q. This has been reproved and studied by Bryan and Morrison from the viewpoint of motivic Donaldson-Thomas theory. In this note we give a new proof of the Feit-Fine result, and generalize it to the Lie algebra of finite unitary groups and to the Lie algebra of odd characteristic finite symplectic groups. We extract some asymptotic information from these generating functions. Finally, we derive generating functions for the number of commuting nilpotent elements for the Lie algebras of the finite general linear and unitary groups, and of odd characteristic symplectic groups.

A lower bound for the dimension of a highest weight module

For each integer $t>0$ and each complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we determine the least dimension of an irreducible highest weight representation of $\mathfrak{g}$ whose highest weight has height $t$. As a corollary, we classify all irreducible modules whose dimension equals a product of two primes.

Global Oort Groups

We study the Oort groups for a prime p, i.e. finite groups G such that every G-Galois branched cover of smooth curves over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p lifts to a G-cover of curves in characteristic 0. We prove that all Oort groups lie in a particular class of finite groups that we characterize, with equality of classes under a conjecture about local liftings. We prove this equality unconditionally if the order of G is not divisible by 2p^2. We also treat the local lifting problem and relate it to the global problem.

Rigidity for F_4(p)

We prove the existence of certain rationally rigid triples in F_4(p) for good primes p (i.e., p>3), thereby showing that these groups occur as regular Galois groups over Q(t) and so also over Q. We show that these triples give rise to rigid triples in the algebraic group and prove that they generate an interesting subgroup in characteristic 0.
