Shapes of unit lattices in $D_p$-number fields

The unit group of the ring of integers of a number field, modulo torsion, is a lattice via the logarithmic Minkowski embedding. We examine the shape of this lattice, which we call the unit shape, within the family of prime degree $p$ number fields whose Galois closure has dihedral Galois group $D_p$ and a unique real embedding. In the case $p = 5$, we prove that the unit shapes lie on a single hypercycle on the modular surface (in this case, the modular surface is the space of shapes of rank $2$ lattices). For general $p$, we show that the unit shapes are contained in a finite union of translates of periodic torus orbits in the space of shapes.

The shapes of Galois quartic fields

We determine the shapes of all degree $4$ number fields that are Galois. These lie in four infinite families depending on the Galois group and the tame versus wild ramification of the field. In the $V_4$ case, each family is a two-dimensional space of orthorhombic lattices and we show that the shapes are equidistributed, in a regularized sense, in these spaces as the discriminant goes to infinity (with respect to natural measures). We also show that the shape is a complete invariant in some natural families of $V_4$-quartic fields. For $C_4$-quartic fields, each family is a one-dimensional space of tetragonal lattices and the shapes make up a discrete subset of points in these spaces. We prove asymptotics for the number of fields with a given shape in this case.

Equidistribution of shapes of complex cubic fields of fixed quadratic resolvent

We show that the shape of a complex cubic field lies on the geodesic of the modular surface defined by the field's trace-zero form. We also prove a general such statement for all orders in étale Q-algebras. Applying a method of Manjul Bhargava and Piper H to results of Bhargava and Ariel Shnidman, we prove that the shapes lying on a fixed geodesic become equidistributed with respect to the hyperbolic measure as the discriminant of the complex cubic field goes to infinity. We also show that the shape of a complex cubic field is a complete invariant (within the family of all cubic fields).

Explicit computations of Hida families via overconvergent modular symbols

In [Pollack-Stevens 2011], efficient algorithms are given to compute with overconvergent modular symbols. These algorithms then allow for the fast computation of $p$-adic $L$-functions and have further been applied to compute rational points on elliptic curves (e.g. [Darmon-Pollack 2006, Trifković 2006]). In this paper, we generalize these algorithms to the case of families of overconvergent modular symbols. As a consequence, we can compute $p$-adic families of Hecke-eigenvalues, two-variable $p$-adic $L$-functions, $L$-invariants, as well as the shape and structure of ordinary Hida-Hecke algebras.

The shapes of pure cubic fields

We determine the shapes of pure cubic fields and show that they fall into two families based on whether the field is wildly or tamely ramified (of Type I or Type II in the sense of Dedekind). We show that the shapes of Type I fields are rectangular and that they are equidistributed, in a regularized sense, when ordered by discriminant, in the one-dimensional space of all rectangular lattices. We do the same for Type II fields, which are however no longer rectangular. We obtain as a corollary of the determination of these shapes that the shape of a pure cubic field is a complete invariant determining the field within the family of all cubic fields.

Iwasawa theory for symmetric powers of CM modular forms at nonordinary primes, II

Continuing the study of the Iwasawa theory of symmetric powers of CM modular forms at supersingular primes begun by the first author and Antonio Lei, we prove a Main Conjecture equating the "admissible" $p$-adic $L$-functions to characteristic ideals of "finite-slope" Selmer modules constructed by the second author. As a key ingredient, we improve Rubin's result on the Main Conjecture of Iwasawa theory for imaginary quadratic fields to an equality at inert primes.

Gauss-Manin connections for p-adic families of nearly overconvergent modular forms

We interpolate the Gauss-Manin connection in p-adic families of nearly overconvergent modular forms. This gives a family of Maass-Shimura type differential operators from the space of nearly overconvergent modular forms of type r to the space of nearly overconvergent modular forms of type r + 1 with p-adic weight shifted by 2. Our construction is purely geometric, using Andreatta-Iovita-Stevens and Pilloni's geometric construction of eigencurves, and should thus generalize to higher rank groups.

Counting elliptic curves with prescribed torsion

Mazur's theorem states that there are exactly 15 possibilities for the torsion subgroup of an elliptic curve over the rational numbers. We determine how often each of these groups actually occurs. Precisely, if $G$ is one of these 15 groups, we show that the number of elliptic curves up to height $X$ whose torsion subgroup is isomorphic to $G$ is on the order of $X^{1/d}$, for some number $d=d(G)$ which we compute.

On symmetric power L-invariants of Iwahori level Hilbert modular forms

We compute the arithmetic L-invariants (of Greenberg-Benois) of twists of symmetric powers of p-adic Galois representations attached to Iwahori level Hilbert modular forms (under some technical conditions). Our method uses the automorphy of symmetric powers and the study of analytic Galois representations on p-adic families of automorphic forms over symplectic and unitary groups. Combining these families with some explicit plethysm in the representation theory of GL(2), we construct global Galois cohomology classes with coefficients in the symmetric powers and provide formulae for the L-invariants in terms of logarithmic derivatives of Hecke eigenvalues.

Iwasawa theory for symmetric powers of CM modular forms at non-ordinary primes

Let f be a cuspidal newform with complex multiplication (CM) and let p be an odd prime at which f is non-ordinary. We construct admissible p-adic L-functions for the symmetric powers of f, thus verifying general conjectures of Dabrowski and Panchishkin in this special case. We also construct their "mixed" plus and minus counterparts and prove an analogue of Pollack's decomposition of the admissible p-adic L-functions into mixed plus and minus p-adic L-functions. On the arithmetic side, we define corresponding mixed plus and minus Selmer groups. We unite the arithmetic with the analytic by first formulating the Main Conjecture of Iwasawa Theory relating the plus and minus Selmer groups with the plus and minus p-adic L-functions, and then proving the exceptional zero conjecture for the admissible p-adic L-functions. The latter result takes advantage of recent work of Benois, while the former uses recent work of the second author, as well as the main conjecture of Mazur-Wiles.

On Greenberg's $L$-invariant of the symmetric sixth power of an ordinary cusp form

We derive a formula for Greenberg's $L$-invariant of Tate twists of the symmetric sixth power of an ordinary non-CM cuspidal newform of weight $\geq4$, under some technical assumptions. This requires a "sufficiently rich" Galois deformation of the symmetric cube which we obtain from the symmetric cube lift to $\GSp(4)_{/\QQ}$ of Ramakrishnan--Shahidi and the Hida theory of this group developed by Tilouine--Urban. The $L$-invariant is expressed in terms of derivatives of Frobenius eigenvalues varying in the Hida family. Our result suggests that one could compute Greenberg's $L$-invariant of all symmetric powers by using appropriate functorial transfers and Hida theory on higher rank groups.
