The Sinkhorn algorithm, parabolic optimal transport and geometric Monge-Ampère equations

We show that the discrete Sinkhorn algorithm - as applied in the setting of Optimal Transport on a compact manifold - converges to the solution of a fully non-linear parabolic PDE of Monge-Ampere type, in a large-scale limit. The latter evolution equation has previously appeared in different contexts (e.g. on the torus it can be be identified with the Ricci flow). This leads to algorithmic approximations of the potential of the Optimal Transport map, as well as the Optimal Transport distance, with explicit bounds on the arithmetic complexity of the construction and the approximation errors. As applications we obtain explicit schemes of nearly linear complexity, at each iteration, for optimal transport on the torus and the two-sphere, as well as the far-field antenna problem. Connections to Quasi-Monte Carlo methods are exploited.

Conical Calabi-Yau metrics on toric affine varieties and convex cones

It is shown that any affine toric variety Y, which is Q-Gorenstein, admits a conical Ricci flat Kahler metric, which is smooth on the regular locus of Y. The corresponding Reeb vector is the unique minimizer of the volume functional on the Reeb cone of Y. The case when the vertex point of Y is an isolated singularity was previously shown by Futaki-Ono-Wang. The proof is based on an existence result for the inhomogeneous Monge-Ampere equation in real Euclidean space with exponential right hand side and prescribed target given by a proper convex convex, combined with transversal a priori estimates on Y.

An invitation to Kähler-Einstein metrics and random point processes

This is an invitation to the probabilistic approach for constructing Kähler-Einstein metrics on complex projective algebraic manifolds X. The metrics in question emerge in the large N-limit from a canonical way of sampling N points on X, i.e. from random point processes on X, defined in terms of algebro-geometric data. The proof of the convergence towards Kähler-Einstein metrics with negative Ricci curvature is explained. In the case of positive Ricci curvature a variational approach is introduced to prove the conjectural convergence, which can be viewed as a probabilistic constructive analog of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture. The variational approach reveals, in particular, that the convergence holds under the hypothesis that there is no phase transition, which - from the algebro-geometric point of view - amounts to an analytic property of a certain Archimedean zeta function.

Sharp deviation inequalities for the 2D Coulomb gas and Quantum hall states, I

We establish sharp deviation inequalities for the linear statistics of the 2D Coulomb gas. These imply sub-Gaussian inequalities, where the variance is given by the Dirichlet norm. The proofs use complex geometry and potential theory on Riemann surfaces and apply more generally to beta-ensembles, which also include integer Quantum Hall states on Riemann surfaces. In a sequel of the paper we give applications to large and moderate deviation principles, local laws at mesoscopic scales, quantitative Bergman kernel asymptotics. In a series of companion papers applications to concentration of measure, Monte-Carlo methods for numerical integration and random matrices are given and relations to Kahler geometry are explored.

Statistical Mechanics of Interpolation Nodes, Pluripotential theory and Complex Geometry

This is mainly a survey, explaining how the probabilistic (statistical mechanical) construction of Kahler-Einstein metrics on compact complex manifolds, introduced in a series of works by the author, naturally arises from classical approximation and interpolation problems in complex n-space. A fair amount of background material is included. Along the way, the results are generalized to the non-compact setting of complex n-space. This yields a probabilistic construction of Kahler solutions to Einstein's equations in complex n-space, with cosmological constant -beta, from a gas of interpolation nodes in equilibrium at positive inverse temperature -beta. In the infinite temperature limit, solutions to the Calabi-Yau equation are obtained. In the opposite zero-temperature the results may be interpreted as "transcendental" analogs of classical asymptotics for orthogonal polynomials, with the inverse temperature playing the role of the degree of a polynomial.

Regularity of weak minimizers of the K-energy and applications to properness and K-stability

Let $(X,ω)$ be a compact Kähler manifold and $\mathcal H$ the space of Kähler metrics cohomologous to $ω$. If a cscK metric exists in $\mathcal H$, we show that all finite energy minimizers of the extended K-energy are smooth cscK metrics, partially confirming a conjecture of Y.A. Rubinstein and the second author. As an immediate application, we obtain that existence of a cscK metric in $\mathcal H$ implies J-properness of the K-energy, thus confirming one direction of a conjecture of Tian. Exploiting this properness result we prove that an ample line bundle $(X,L)$ admitting a cscK metric in $c_1(L)$ is $K$-polystable.

On the strict convexity of the K-energy

Let (X,L) be a polarized projective complex manifold. We show, by a simple toric one-dimensional example, that Mabuchi's K-energy functional on the geodesically complete space of bounded positive (1,1)-forms in the first Chern class of L, endowed with the Mabuchi metric, is not strictly convex modulo automorphisms. However, under some further assumptions the strict convexity in question does hold in the toric case. This leads to a uniqueness result saying that a finite energy minimizer of the K-energy (which exists on any toric polarized manifold (X,L) which is uniformly K-stable) is uniquely determined modulo automorphisms under the assumption that there exists some minimizer with strictly positive curvature current.

From Monge-Ampere equations to envelopes and geodesic rays in the zero temperature limit

Let X be a compact complex manifold equipped with a smooth (but not necessarily positive) closed form theta of one-one type. By a well-known envelope construction this data determines a canonical theta-psh function u which is not two times differentiable, in general. We introduce a family of regularizations of u, parametrized by a positive number beta, defined as the smooth solutions of complex Monge-Ampere equations of Aubin-Yau type. It is shown that, as beta tends to infinity, the regularizations converge to the envelope u in the strongest possible Holder sense. A generalization of this result to the case of a nef and big cohomology class is also obtained. As a consequence new PDE proofs are obtained for the regularity results for envelopes in [14] (which, however, are weaker than the results in [14] in the case of a non-nef big class). Applications to the regularization problem for quasi-psh functions and geodesic rays in the closure of the space of Kahler metrics are given. As briefly explained there is a statistical mechanical motivation for this regularization procedure, where beta appears as the inverse temperature. This point of view also leads to an interpretation of the regularizations as transcendental Bergman metrics.

Determinantal point processes and fermions on complex manifolds: Bulk universality

We consider determinantal point processes on a compact complex manifold X in the limit of many particles. The correlation kernels of the processes are the Bergman kernels associated to a a high power of a given Hermitian holomorphic line bundle L over X. The empirical measure on X of the process, describing the particle locations, converges in probability towards the pluripotential equilibrium measure, expressed in term of the Monge-Ampère operator. The asymptotics of the corresponding fluctuations in the bulk are shown to be asymptotically normal and described by a Gaussian free field and applies to test functions (linear statistics) which are merely Lipschitz continuous. Moreover, a scaling limit of the correlation functions in the bulk is shown to be universal and expressed in terms of (the higher dimensional analog of) the Ginibre ensemble. This geometric setting applies in particular to normal random matrix ensembles, the two dimensional Coulomb gas, free fermions in a strong magnetic field and multivariate orthogonal polynomials.

On large deviations for Gibbs measures, mean energy and Gamma-convergence

We consider the random point processes on a measure space X defined by the Gibbs measures associated to a given sequence of N-particle Hamiltonians H^{(N)}. Inspired by the method of Messer-Spohn for proving concentration properties for the laws of the corresponding empirical measures, we propose a number of hypotheses on H^{(N)} which are quite general, but still strong enough to extend the approach of Messer-Spohn. The hypotheses are formulated in terms of the asymptotics of the corresponding mean energy functionals. We show that in many situations the approach even yields a Large Deviation Principle (LDP) for the corresponding laws. Connections to Gamma-convergence of (free) energy type functionals at different levels are also explored. The focus is on differences between positive and negative temperature situations, motivated by applications to complex geometry. The results yield, in particular, large deviation principles at positive as well as negative temperatures for quite general classes of singular mean field models with pair interactions, generalizing the 2D vortex model and Coulomb gases. In a companion paper the results are illustrated in the setting of Coulomb and Riesz type gases on a Riemannian manifold X, comparing with the complex geometric setting.

Propagation of chaos, Wasserstein gradient flows and toric Kahler-Einstein metrics

Motivated by a probabilistic approach to Kahler-Einstein metrics we consider a general non-equilibrium statistical mechanics model in Euclidean space consisting of the stochastic gradient flow of a given (possibly singular) quasi-convex N-particle interaction energy. We show that a deterministic "macroscopic" evolution equation emerges in the large N-limit of many particles. This is a strengthening of previous results which required a uniform two-sided bound on the Hessian of the interaction energy. The proof uses the theory of weak gradient flows on the Wasserstein space. Applied to the setting of permanental point processes at "negative temperature" the corresponding limiting evolution equation yields a drift-diffusion equation, coupled to the Monge-Ampere operator, whose static solutions correspond to toric Kahler-Einstein metrics. This drift-diffusion equation is the gradient flow on the Wasserstein space of probability measures of the K-energy functional in Kahler geometry and it can be seen as a fully non-linear version of various extensively studied dissipative evolution equations and conservations laws, including the Keller-Segel equation and Burger's equation. We also obtain a real probabilistic (and tropical) analog of the complex geometric Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture in this setting. In a companion paper applications to singular pair interactions are given.

Propagation of chaos for a class of first order models with singular mean field interactions

Dynamical systems of N particles in \R^{D} interacting by a singular pair potential of mean field type are considered. The systems are assumed to be of gradient type and the existence of a macroscopic limit in the many particle limit is established for a large class of singular interaction potentials in the stochastic as well as the deterministic settings. The main assumption on the potentials is an appropriate notion of quasi-convexity. When D=1 the convergence result is sharp when applied to strongly singular repulsive interactions and for a general dimension D the result applies to attractive interactions with Lipschitz singular interaction potentials, leading to stochastic particle solutions to the corresponding macroscopic aggregation equations. The proof uses the theory of gradient flows in Wasserstein spaces of Ambrosio-Gigli-Savaree.

Kahler-Einstein metrics, canonical random point processes and birational geometry

In the present paper and the companion paper [8] a probabilistic (statistical mechanical) approach to the study of canonical metrics and measures on a complex algebraic variety X is introduced. On any such variety with positive Kodaira dimension a canonical (birationally invariant) random point processes is defined and shown to converge in probability towards a canonical deterministic measure on X, coinciding with the canonical measure of Song-Tian and Tsuji. The proof is based on new large deviation principle for Gibbs measures with singular Hamiltonians which relies on an asymptotic submean inequality in large dimensions, proved in a companion paper. In the case of a variety X of general type we obtain as a corollary that the (possibly singular) Kähler-Einstein metric on X with negative Ricci curvature is the limit of a canonical sequence of quasi-explicit Bergman type metrics. In the opposite setting of a Fano variety X we relate the canonical point processes to a new notion of stability, that we call Gibbs stability, which admits a natural algebro-geometric formulation and which we conjecture is equivalent to the existence of a Kähler-Einstein metric on X and hence to K-stability as in the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture.

Large deviations for Gibbs measures with singular Hamiltonians and emergence of Kahler-Einstein metrics

In the present paper and the companion paper [9] a probabilistic (statistical-mechanical) approach to the construction of canonical metrics on a complex algebraic varieties X is introduced, by sampling "temperature deformed" determinantal point processes. The main new ingredient is a large deviation principle for Gibbs measures with singular Hamiltonians, which is proved in the present paper. As an application we show that the unique Kahler-Einstein metric with negative Ricci curvature on a canonically polarized algebraic manifold X emerges in the many particle limit of the canonical point processes on X. In the companion paper [9] the extension to algebraic varieties X with positive Kodaira dimension is given and a conjectural picture relating negative temperature states to the existence problem for Kahler-Einstein metrics with positive Ricci curvature is developed.

Kähler-Einstein metrics on stable varieties and log canonical pairs

Let $X$ be a canonically polarized variety, i.e. a complex projective variety such that its canonical class $K_{X}$ defines an ample $\Q-$line bundle, and satisfying the conditions $G_1$ and $S_2$. Our main result says that $X$ admits a Kähler-Einstein metric iff $X$ has semi-log canonical singularities i.e. iff $X$ is a stable variety in the sense of Kollár-Shepherd-Barron and Alexeev (whose moduli spaces are known to be compact). By definition a Kähler-Einstein metric in this singular context simply means a Kähler-Einstein on the regular locus of $X$ with volume equal to the algebraic volume of $K_{X},$ i.e. the top intersection number of $K_{X}.$ We also show that such a metric is uniquely determined and extends to define a canonical positive current in $c_{1}(K_{X}).$ Combined with recent results of Odaka our main result shows that $X$ admits a Kähler-Einstein metric iff $X$ is K-stable, which thus confirms the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture in this general setting of (possibly singular) canonically polarized varieties. More generally, our results are shown to hold in the setting of log minimal varieties and they also generalize some prior results concerning Kähler-Einstein metrics on quasi-projective varieties.

From the Kähler-Ricci flow to moving free boundaries and shocks

We show that the twisted Kähler-Ricci flow on a complex manifold X converges to a flow of moving free boundaries, in a certain scaling limit. This leads to a new phenomenon of singularity formation and topology change which can be seen as a complex generalization of the extensively studied formation of shocks in Hamilton-Jacobi equations and hyperbolic conservation laws (notably, in the adhesion model in cosmology). In particular we show how to recover the Hele-Shaw flow (Laplacian growth) of growing 2D domains from the Ricci flow. As we briefly indicate the scaling limit in question arises as the zero-temperature limit of a certain many particle system on X.

Convexity of the extended K-energy and the large time behaviour of the weak Calabi flow

Let $(X,ω)$ be a compact connected Kähler manifold and denote by $(\mathcal E^p,d_p)$ the metric completion of the space of Kähler potentials $\mathcal H_ω$ with respect to the $L^p$-type path length metric $d_p$. First, we show that the natural analytic extension of the (twisted) Mabuchi K-energy to $\mathcal E^p$ is a $d_p$-lsc functional that is convex along finite energy geodesics. Second, following the program of J. Streets, we use this to study the asymptotics of the weak (twisted) Calabi flow inside the CAT(0) metric space $(\mathcal E^2,d_2)$. This flow exists for all times and coincides with the usual smooth (twisted) Calabi flow whenever the latter exists. We show that the weak (twisted) Calabi flow either diverges with respect to the $d_2$-metric or it $d_1$-converges to some minimizer of the K-energy inside $\mathcal E^2$. This gives the first concrete result about the long time convergence of this flow on general Kähler manifolds, partially confirming a conjecture of Donaldson. Finally, we investigate the possibility of constructing destabilizing geodesic rays asymptotic to diverging weak (twisted) Calabi trajectories, and give a result in the case when the twisting form is Kähler. If the twisting form is only smooth, we reduce this problem to a conjecture on the regularity of minimizers of the K-energy on $\mathcal E^1$, known to hold in case of Fano manifolds.

Kähler-Einstein metrics and the Kähler-Ricci flow on log Fano varieties

We prove the existence and uniqueness of Kähler-Einstein metrics on Q-Fano varieties with log terminal singularities (and more generally on log Fano pairs) whose Mabuchi functional is proper. We study analogues of the works of Perelman on the convergence of the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow, and of Keller, Rubinstein on its discrete version, Ricci iteration. In the special case of (non-singular) Fano manifolds, our results on Ricci iteration yield smooth convergence without any additional condition, improving on previous results. Our result for the Kähler-Ricci flow provides weak convergence independently of Perelman's celebrated estimates.
