Hairy planar black holes in higher dimensions

We construct exact hairy planar black holes in D-dimensional AdS gravity. These solutions are regular except at the singularity and have stress-energy that satisfies the null energy condition. We present a detailed analysis of their thermodynamical properties and show that the first law is satisfied. We also discuss these solutions in the context of AdS/CFT duality and construct the associated c-function.

Exact asymptotically flat charged hairy black holes with a dilaton potential

We find broad classes of exact 4-dimensional asymptotically flat black hole solutions in Einstein-Maxwell theories with a non-minimally coupled dilaton and its non-trivial potential. We consider a few interesting limits, in particular, a regular generalization of the dilatonic Reissner-Nordstr{ö}m solution and, also, smooth deformations of supersymmetric black holes. Further examples are provided for more general dilaton potentials. We discuss the thermodynamical properties and show that the first law is satisfied. In the non-extremal case the entropy depends, as expected, on the asymptotic value of the dilaton. In the extremal limit, the entropy is determined purely in terms of charges and is independent of the asymptotic value of the dilaton. The attractor mechanism can be used as a criterion for the existence of the regular solutions. Since there is a `competition' between the effective potential and dilaton potential, we also obtain regular extremal black hole solutions with just one U(1) gauge field turned on.

Entanglement and discord: accelerated observations of local and global modes

We investigate the amount of entanglement and quantum discord extractable from a two mode squeezed state as considered from the viewpoint of two observers, Alice (inertial) and Rob (accelerated). We find that using localized modes produces qualitatively different correlation properties for large accelerations than do Unruh modes. Specifically, the entanglement undergoes a sudden death as a function of acceleration and the discord asymptotes to zero in the limit of infinite acceleration. We conclude that the previous Unruh mode analyses do not determine the acceleration dependent entanglement and discord degradation of a given quantum state.

Bring out your codes! Bring out your codes! (Increasing Software Visibility and Re-use)

Progress is being made in code discoverability and preservation, but as discussed at ADASS XXI, many codes still remain hidden from public view. With the Astrophysics Source Code Library (ASCL) now indexed by the SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS), the introduction of a new journal, Astronomy & Computing, focused on astrophysics software, and the increasing success of education efforts such as Software Carpentry and SciCoder, the community has the opportunity to set a higher standard for its science by encouraging the release of software for examination and possible reuse. We assembled representatives of the community to present issues inhibiting code release and sought suggestions for tackling these factors. The session began with brief statements by panelists; the floor was then opened for discussion and ideas. Comments covered a diverse range of related topics and points of view, with apparent support for the propositions that algorithms should be readily available, code used to produce published scientific results should be made available, and there should be discovery mechanisms to allow these to be found easily. With increased use of resources such as GitHub (for code availability), ASCL (for code discovery), and a stated strong preference from the new journal Astronomy & Computing for code release, we expect to see additional progress over the next few years.

Singularities in Hyperscaling Violating Spacetimes

We examine spacetimes which generalize Lifshitz scaling to allow hyperscaling violation invariance (i.e. a constant conformal transformation) for the types of singularities frequently found in the Lifshitz case. We find that most of these spacetimes suffer either from a traditional naked curvature singularity or a null curvature singularity robust against stringy higher derivative corrections. We do find a one-parameter family that evades these issues but this family requires exotic matter, in particular involving a negative energy density that may not be interpreted as due to a cosmological constant.

IVOA Recommendation: An IVOA Standard for Unified Content Descriptors Version 1.1

This document describes the current understanding of the IVOA controlled vocabulary for describing astronomical data quantities, called Unified Content Descriptors (UCDs). The present document defines a new standard (named UCD1+) improving the first generation of UCDs (hereafter UCD1). The basic idea is to adopt a new syntax and vocabulary requiring little effort for people to adapt softwares already using UCD1. This document also addresses the questions of maintenance and evolution of the UCD1+. Examples of use cases within the VO, and tools for using UCD1+ are also described.

IVOA Recommendation: Maintenance of the list of UCD words Version 1.20

According to what is stated in the IVOA Recommendation "An IVOA standard for Unified Content Descriptors", a procedural document should be created in order to maintain (add, change, suppress words) the standard list of UCD1+ words "The UCD1+ Controlled Vocabulary". This document describes the procedure to maintain the standard list of UCD1+ words.

Lifshitz Solitons

We numerically obtain a class of soliton solutions for Einstein gravity in $(n+1)$ dimensions coupled to massive abelian gauge fields and with a negative cosmological constant with Lifshitz asymptotic behaviour. We find that for all $n\geq3$, a discrete set of magic values for the charge density at the origin (guaranteeing an asymptotically Lifshitz geometry) exists when the critical exponent associated with the Lifshitz scaling is $z=2$; moreover, in all cases, a single magic value is obtained for essentially every $1 2$ sufficiently.

Holographic Renormalization for Asymptotically Lifshitz Spacetimes

A variational formulation is given for a theory of gravity coupled to a massive vector in four dimensions, with Asymptotically Lifshitz boundary conditions on the fields. For theories with critical exponent z=2 we obtain a well-defined variational principle by explicitly constructing two actions with local boundary counterterms. As part of our analysis we obtain solutions of these theories on a neighborhood of spatial infinity, study the asymptotic symmetries, and consider different definitions of the boundary stress tensor and associated charges. A constraint on the boundary data for the fields figures prominently in one of our formulations, and in that case the only suitable definition of the boundary stress tensor is due to Hollands, Ishibashi, and Marolf. Their definition naturally emerges from our requirement of finiteness of the action under Hamilton-Jacobi variations of the fields. A second, more general variational principle also allows the Brown-York definition of a boundary stress tensor.

Pathologies in Asymptotically Lifshitz Spacetimes

There has been significant interest in the last several years in studying possible gravitational duals, known as Lifshitz spacetimes, to anisotropically scaling field theories by adding matter to distort the asymptotics of an AdS spacetime. We point out that putative ground state for the most heavily studied example of such a spacetime, that with a flat spatial section, suffers from a naked singularity and further point out this singularity is not resolvable by any known stringy effect. We review the reasons one might worry that asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes are unstable and employ the initial data problem to study the stability of such systems. Rather surprisingly this question, and even the initial value problem itself, for these spacetimes turns out to generically not be well-posed. A generic normalizable state will evolve in such a way to violate Lifshitz asymptotics in finite time. Conversely, enforcing the desired asymptotics at all times puts strong restrictions not just on the metric and fields in the asymptotic region but in the deep interior as well. Generically, even perturbations of the matter field of compact support are not compatible with the desired asymptotics.

Stability of self-dual black holes

We study the stability properties of the Cauchy horizon for two different self-dual black hole solutions obtained in a model inspired by Loop Quantum Gravity. The self-dual spacetimes depend on a free dimensionless parameter called a polymeric parameter P. For the first metric the Cauchy horizon is stable for supermassive black holes only if this parameter is sufficiently small. For small black holes, however the stability is easily implemented. The second metric analyzed is not only self-dual but also "form-invariant" under the transformation r -> r*^2/r and r* = 2 m P. We find that this symmetry protects the Cauchy horizon for any value of the polymeric parameter.

New instabilities of de Sitter spacetimes

We construct an instanton describing the pair production of non-Kaluza Klein bubbles of nothing in higher odd dimensional de Sitter spaces. In addition to showing that higher dimensional de Sitter spaces have a nonzero probability to become topologically nontrivial, this process provides direct evidence for the association of entropy with cosmological horizons and that non-Kaluza Klein bubbles of nothing are a necessary ingredient in string theory or any other consistent quantum theory of gravity in higher dimensions.

Phase Transitions Between Solitons and Black Holes in Asymptotically AdS/$Z_k$ Spaces

We employ a thermodynamic analysis to determine the phase structure of Eguchi-Hanson solitons, Schwarzschild-AdS/$\mathbb{Z}_k$ black holes and thermal AdS/$\mathbb{Z}_k$. The Euclidean actions are calculated by two equable means: the first uses the Eguchi-Hanson soliton as the thermal background while the second makes use of minimal boundary counterterms in the action necessary to render individual actions finite. The Euclidean actions are then utilised to determine the phase structure in arbitrary odd dimension; it is found that there is a Hawking-Page phase transition and also a phase transition between the black hole and soliton. There is found to be no smooth phase transition governed by an order parameter between AdS/$\mathbb{Z}_k$ and the soliton but nevertheless AdS/$\mathbb{Z}_k$ changes phase by tunneling to the lower energy soliton configuration.

Charging Black Saturn?

We construct new charged static solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell field equations in five dimensions via a solution generation technique utilizing the symmetries of the reduced Lagrangian. By applying our method on the multi-Reissner-Nordstrom solution in four dimensions, we generate the multi-Reissner-Nordstrom solution in five dimensions. We focus on the five-dimensional solution describing a pair of charged black objects with general masses and electric charges. This solution includes the double Reissner-Nordstrom solution as well as the charged version of the five-dimensional static black Saturn. However, all the black Saturn configurations that we could find present either a conical singularity or a naked singularity. We also obtain a non-extremal configuration of charged black strings that reduces in the extremal limit to a Majumdar-Papapetrou like solution in five dimensions.

Supergravity on an Atiyah-Hitchin Base

We construct solutions to five dimensional minimal supergravity using an Atiyah-Hitchin base space. In examining the structure of solutions we show that they generically contain a singularity either on the Atiyah-Hitchin bolt or at larger radius where there is a singular solitonic boundary. However for most points in parameter space the solution exhibits a velocity of light surface (analogous to what appears in a Goedel space-time) that shields the singularity. For these solutions, all closed time-like curves are causally disconnected from the rest of the space-time in that they exist within the velocity of light surface, which null geodesics are unable to cross. The singularities in these solutions are thus found to be hidden behind the velocity of light surface and so are not naked despite the lack of an event horizon. Outside of this surface the space-time is geodesically complete, asymptotically flat and can be arranged so as not to contain closed time-like curves at infinity. The rest of parameter space simply yields solutions with naked singularities.

Accelerating Taub-NUT and Eguchi-Hanson solitons in four dimensions

We construct new solutions of the vacuum Einstein field equations in four dimensions via a solution generating method utilizing the SL(2,R) symmetry of the reduced Lagrangian. We apply the method to an accelerating version of the Zipoy-Voorhees solution and generate new solutions which we interpret to be the accelerating versions of the Zipoy-Voorhees generalisation of the Taub-NUT solution (with Lorentzian signature) and the Zipoy-Voorhees generalisation of the Eguchi-Hanson solitons (with Euclidean signature). As an intermediary in the solution-generating process we obtain charged versions of the accelerated Zipoy-Voorhees-like families of solutions. Finally we present the accelerating version of the Taub-NUT solution and discuss its properties.
