Tensor categories for vertex operator superalgebra extensions

Let $V$ be a vertex operator algebra with a category $\mathcal{C}$ of (generalized) modules that has vertex tensor category structure, and thus braided tensor category structure, and let $A$ be a vertex operator (super)algebra extension of $V$. We employ tensor categories to study untwisted (also called local) $A$-modules in $\mathcal{C}$, using results of Huang-Kirillov-Lepowsky showing that $A$ is a (super)algebra object in $\mathcal{C}$ and that generalized $A$-modules in $\mathcal{C}$ correspond exactly to local modules for the corresponding (super)algebra object. Both categories, of local modules for a $\mathcal{C}$-algebra and (under suitable conditions) of generalized $A$-modules, have natural braided monoidal category structure, given in the first case by Pareigis and Kirillov-Ostrik and in the second case by Huang-Lepowsky-Zhang. Our main result is that the Huang-Kirillov-Lepowsky isomorphism of categories between local (super)algebra modules and extended vertex operator (super)algebra modules is also an isomorphism of braided monoidal (super)categories. Using this result, we show that induction from a suitable subcategory of $V$-modules to $A$-modules is a vertex tensor functor. We give two applications. First, we derive Verlinde formulae for regular vertex operator superalgebras and regular $(1/2)\mathbb{Z}$-graded vertex operator algebras by realizing them as (super)algebra objects in the vertex tensor categories of their even and $\mathbb{Z}$-graded components, respectively. Second, we analyze parafermionic cosets $C=\mathrm{Com}(V_L,V)$ where $L$ is a positive definite even lattice and $V$ is regular. If the category of either $V$-modules or $C$-modules is understood, then our results classify all inequivalent simple modules for the other algebra and determine their fusion rules and modular character transformations. We illustrate both directions with several examples.

Tensor structure on the Kazhdan-Lusztig category for affine $\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)$

We show that the Kazhdan-Lusztig category $KL_k$ of level-$k$ finite-length modules with highest-weight composition factors for the affine Lie superalgebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)}$ has vertex algebraic braided tensor supercategory structure, and that its full subcategory $\mathcal{O}_k^{fin}$ of objects with semisimple Cartan subalgebra actions is a tensor subcategory. We show that every simple $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)}$-module in $KL_k$ has a projective cover in $\mathcal{O}_k^{fin}$, and we determine all fusion rules involving simple and projective objects in $\mathcal{O}_k^{fin}$. Then using Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations, we prove that $KL_k$ and $\mathcal{O}_k^{fin}$ are rigid. As an application of the tensor supercategory structure on $\mathcal{O}_k^{fin}$, we study certain module categories for the affine Lie superalgebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}(2|1)}$ at levels $1$ and $-\frac{1}{2}$. In particular, we obtain a tensor category of $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}(2|1)}$-modules at level $-\frac{1}{2}$ that includes relaxed highest-weight modules and their images under spectral flow.

On the tensor structure of modules for compact orbifold vertex operator algebras

Suppose $V^G$ is the fixed-point vertex operator subalgebra of a compact group $G$ acting on a simple abelian intertwining algebra $V$. We show that if all irreducible $V^G$-modules contained in $V$ live in some braided tensor category of $V^G$-modules, then they generate a tensor subcategory equivalent to the category $\mathrm{Rep}\,G$ of finite-dimensional representations of $G$, with associativity and braiding isomorphisms modified by the abelian $3$-cocycle defining the abelian intertwining algebra structure on $V$. Additionally, we show that if the fusion rules for the irreducible $V^G$-modules contained in $V$ agree with the dimensions of spaces of intertwiners among $G$-modules, then the irreducibles contained in $V$ already generate a braided tensor category of $V^G$-modules. These results do not require rigidity on any tensor category of $V^G$-modules and thus apply to many examples where braided tensor category structure is known to exist but rigidity is not known; for example they apply when $V^G$ is $C_2$-cofinite but not necessarily rational. When $V^G$ is both $C_2$-cofinite and rational and $V$ is a vertex operator algebra, we use the equivalence between $\mathrm{Rep}\,G$ and the corresponding subcategory of $V^G$-modules to show that $V$ is also rational. As another application, we show that a certain category of modules for the Virasoro algebra at central charge $1$ admits a braided tensor category structure equivalent to $\mathrm{Rep}\,SU(2)$, up to modification by an abelian $3$-cocycle.

Direct limit completions of vertex tensor categories

We show that direct limit completions of vertex tensor categories inherit vertex and braided tensor category structures, under conditions that hold for example for all known Virasoro and affine Lie algebra tensor categories. A consequence is that the theory of vertex operator (super)algebra extensions also applies to infinite-order extensions. As an application, we relate rigid and non-degenerate vertex tensor categories of certain modules for both the affine vertex superalgebra of $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ and the $N=1$ super Virasoro algebra to categories of Virasoro algebra modules via certain cosets.

Vertex algebraic intertwining operators among generalized Verma modules for affine Lie algebras

We find sufficient conditions for the construction of vertex algebraic intertwining operators, among generalized Verma modules for an affine Lie algebra $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$, from $\mathfrak{g}$-module homomorphisms. When $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}_2$, these results extend previous joint work with J. Yang, but the method used here is different. Here, we construct intertwining operators by solving Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations for three-point correlation functions associated to $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$, and we identify obstructions to the construction arising from the possible non-existence of series solutions having a prescribed form.

Twisted modules and $G$-equivariantization in logarithmic conformal field theory

A two-dimensional chiral conformal field theory can be viewed mathematically as the representation theory of its chiral algebra, a vertex operator algebra. Vertex operator algebras are especially well suited for studying logarithmic conformal field theory (in which correlation functions have logarithmic singularities arising from non-semisimple modules for the chiral algebra) because of the logarithmic tensor category theory of Huang, Lepowsky, and Zhang. In this paper, we study not-necessarily-semisimple or rigid braided tensor categories $\mathcal{C}$ of modules for the fixed-point vertex operator subalgebra $V^G$ of a vertex operator (super)algebra $V$ with finite automorphism group $G$. The main results are that every $V^G$-module in $\mathcal{C}$ with a unital and associative $V$-action is a direct sum of $g$-twisted $V$-modules for possibly several $g\in G$, that the category of all such twisted $V$-modules is a braided $G$-crossed (super)category, and that the $G$-equivariantization of this braided $G$-crossed (super)category is braided tensor equivalent to the original category $\mathcal{C}$ of $V^G$-modules. This generalizes results of Kirillov and Müger proved using rigidity and semisimplicity. We also apply the main results to the orbifold rationality problem: whether $V^G$ is strongly rational if $V$ is strongly rational. We show that $V^G$ is indeed strongly rational if $V$ is strongly rational, $G$ is any finite automorphism group, and $V^G$ is $C_2$-cofinite.

Non-negative integral level affine Lie algebra tensor categories and their associativity isomorphisms

For a finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we use the vertex tensor category theory of Huang and Lepowsky to identify the category of standard modules for the affine Lie algebra $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$ at a fixed level $\ell\in\mathbb{N}$ with a certain tensor category of finite-dimensional $\mathfrak{g}$-modules. More precisely, the category of level $\ell$ standard $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$-modules is the module category for the simple vertex operator algebra $L_{\hat{\mathfrak{g}}}(\ell,0)$, and as is well known, this category is equivalent as an abelian category to $\mathbf{D}(\mathfrak{g},\ell)$, the category of finite-dimensional modules for the Zhu's algebra $A(L_{\hat{\mathfrak{g}}}(\ell,0))$, which is a quotient of $U(\mathfrak{g})$. Our main result is a direct construction using Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations of the associativity isomorphisms in $\mathbf{D}(\mathfrak{g},\ell)$ induced from the associativity isomorphisms constructed by Huang and Lepowsky in $L_{hat{\mathfrak{g}}}(\ell,0)-\mathbf{mod}$. This construction shows that $\mathbf{D}(\mathfrak{g},\ell)$ is closely related to the Drinfeld category of $U(\mathfrak{g})[[\hbar]]$-modules used by Kazhdan and Lusztig to identify categories of $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$-modules at irrational and most negative rational levels with categories of quantum group modules.

Vertex algebraic intertwining operators among generalized Verma modules for $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})}$

We construct vertex algebraic intertwining operators among certain generalized Verma modules for $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})}$ and calculate the corresponding fusion rules. Additionally, we show that under some conditions these intertwining operators descend to intertwining operators among one generalized Verma module and two (generally non-standard) irreducible modules. Our construction relies on the irreducibility of the maximal proper submodules of generalized Verma modules appearing in the Garland-Lepowsky resolutions of standard $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})}$-modules. We prove this irreducibility using the composition factor multiplicities of irreducible modules in Verma modules for symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebras of rank $2$, given by Rocha-Caridi and Wallach.

A motivated proof of the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities

We present what we call a "motivated proof" of the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities. A similar motivated proof of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities was previously given by G. E. Andrews and R. J. Baxter, and was subsequently generalized to Gordon's identities by J. Lepowsky and M. Zhu. We anticipate that the present proof of the Göllnitz-Gordon-Andrews identities will illuminate certain twisted vertex-algebraic constructions.

Integral forms for tensor powers of the Virasoro vertex operator algebra $L(\frac{1}{2},0)$ and their modules

We construct integral forms containing the conformal vector $ω$ in certain tensor powers of the Virasoro vertex operator algebra $L(\frac{1}{2},0)$, and we construct integral forms in certain modules for these algebras. When a triple of modules for a tensor power of $L(\frac{1}{2},0)$ have integral forms, we classify which intertwining operators among these modules respect the integral forms. As an application, we explore how these results might be used to obtain integral forms in framed vertex operator algebras.

Intertwining operators among modules for affine Lie algebra and lattice vertex operator algebras which respect integral forms

We define an integral intertwining operator among modules for a vertex operator algebra to be an intertwining operator which respects integral forms in the modules, and we show that an intertwining operator is integral if it is integral when restricted to generators of the integral forms in the modules. We apply this result to classify integral intertwining operators which respect certain natural integral forms in modules for affine Lie algebra and lattice vertex operator algebras.

Linear automorphisms of vertex operator algebras associated with formal changes of variable and Bernoulli-type numbers

We study a certain linear automorphism of a vertex operator algebra induced by the formal change of variable $f(x)=e^x-1$ and describe examples showing how this relates the theory of vertex operator algebras to Bernoulli numbers, Bernoulli polynomial values, and related numbers. We give a recursion for such numbers derived using vertex operator relations, and study the Jacobi identity for modified vertex operators that was introduced in work of Lepowsky.

On integral forms for vertex algebras associated with affine Lie algebras and lattices

We revisit the construction of integral forms for vertex (operator) algebras $V_L$ based on even lattices $L$ using generators instead of bases, and we construct integral forms for $V_L$-modules. We construct integral forms for vertex (operator) algebras based on highest-weight modules for affine Lie algebras and we exhibit natural generating sets. For vertex operator algebras in general, we give conditions showing when an integral form contains the standard conformal vector generating the Virasoro algebra. Finally, we study integral forms in contragredients of modules for vertex algebras.

Classification of hyperbolic Dynkin diagrams, root lengths and Weyl group orbits

We give a criterion for a Dynkin diagram, equivalently a generalized Cartan matrix, to be symmetrizable. This criterion is easily checked on the Dynkin diagram. We obtain a simple proof that the maximal rank of a Dynkin diagram of compact hyperbolic type is 5, while the maximal rank of a symmetrizable Dynkin diagram of compact hyperbolic type is 4. Building on earlier classification results of Kac, Kobayashi-Morita, Li and Saçlioglu, we present the 238 hyperbolic Dynkin diagrams in ranks 3-10, 142 of which are symmetrizable. For each symmetrizable hyperbolic generalized Cartan matrix, we give a symmetrization and hence the distinct lengths of real roots in the corresponding root system. For each such hyperbolic root system we determine the disjoint orbits of the action of the Weyl group on real roots. It follows that the maximal number of disjoint Weyl group orbits on real roots in a hyperbolic root system is 4.
