The Fiber of $Sq^n$

A colleague asked about the Adams filtrations of the homotopy classes in the homotopy of the fiber of a particular map between GEMs. The theorem proved in arXiv:2105.02601v3 [math.AT] proves to be effective in answering this (Theorem 4.4). We show that this and some related Adams spectral sequences all collapse at $E_3$ and we determine the value of $E_3 = E_\infty$. Notably, we do not need to determine the cohomology of the fiber or the $E_2$ term of the Adams spectral sequence to do this.

Symmetric A actions on $\mathcal{A}(2)$

We describe the variety of `symmetric' left actions of the mod 2 Steenrod algebra $\mathcal{A}$ on its subalgebra $\mathcal{A}(2)$. These arise as the cohomology of $\text{v}_2$ self maps $Σ^7 Z \longrightarrow Z$, as in arXiv:1608.06250 [math.AT]. There are $256$ $\mathbb{F}_2$ points in this variety, arising from $16$ such actions of $Sq^8$ and, for each such, $16$ actions of $Sq^{16}$. We describe in similar fashion the 1600 $\mathcal{A}$ actions on $\mathcal{A}(2)$ found by Roth(1977) and the inclusion of the variety of symmetric actions into the variety of all actions. We also describe two related varieties of $\mathcal{A}$ actions, the maps between these and the behavior of Spanier-Whitehead duality on these varieties. Finally, we note that the actions which have been used in the literature correspond to the simplest choices, in which all the coordinates equal zero.

Jeff Smith's Theory of Ideals

In 2006, Jeff Smith proposed a theory of ideals for rings in a triangulated symmetric monoidal category such as ring spectra or DGAs. We show that his definition is equivalent to a `central' $R$-$R$-bimodule map $ I \to R$.

The cohomology of the mod 2 Steenrod algebra

A minimal resolution of the mod 2 Steenrod algebra in the range $0 \leq s \leq 128$, $0 \leq t \leq 200$, together with chain maps for each cocycle in that range and for the squaring operation $Sq^0$ in the cohomology of the Steenrod algebra.

The Adams spectral sequence for the image-of-$J$ spectrum

We show that if we factor the long exact sequence in cohomology of a cofiber sequence of spectra into short exact sequences, then the $d_2$-differential in the Adams spectral sequence of any one term is related in a precise way to Yoneda composition with the 2-extension given by the complementary terms in the long exact sequence. We use this to give a complete analysis of the Adams spectral sequence for the connective image-of-$J$ spectrum, finishing a calculation that was begun by D. Davis in 1975.

A Counterexample for Lightning Flash Modules over E(e1,e2)

We give a counterexample to Theorem 5 in Section 18.2 of Margolis' book, "Spectra and the Steenrod Algebra", and make remarks about the proofs of some later theorems in the book that depend on it. The counterexample is a module which does not split as a sum of lightning flash modules and free modules.

On cyclic fixed points of spectra

For a finite p-group G and a bounded below G-spectrum X of finite type mod p, the G-equivariant Segal conjecture for X asserts that the canonical map X^G --> X^{hG} is a p-adic equivalence. Let C_{p^n} be the cyclic group of order p^n. We show that if the C_p Segal conjecture holds for a C_{p^n} spectrum X, as well as for each of its C_{p^e} geometric fixed points for 0 < e < n, then then C_{p^n} Segal conjecture holds for X. Similar results hold for weaker forms of the Segal conjecture, asking only that the canonical map induces an equivalence in sufficiently high degrees, on homotopy groups with suitable finite coefficients.

Koszul duality complexes for the cohomology of iterated loop spaces of spheres

The goal of this article is to make explicit a structured complex whose homology computes the cohomology of the p-profinite completion of the n-fold loop space of a sphere of dimension d=n-m<n. This complex is defined purely algebraically, in terms of characteristic structures of E_n-operads. Our construction involves: the free complete algebra in one variable associated to any E_n-operad; and an element in this free complete algebra, which is associated to a morphism from the operad of L-infinity algebras to an operadic suspension of our E_n-operad. We deduce our main theorem from: a connection between the cohomology of iterated loop spaces and the cohomology of algebras over E_n-operads; and a Koszul duality result for E_n-operads.

On the Postnikov towers for real and complex connective K-theory

Complexification, from real connective K-theory to complex connective K-theory, sits in a well-known cofiber sequence between multiplication by eta and a map related to realification. We show how this cofiber sequence factors as one goes up the Postnikov towers of ko and ku. There are 5 distinct cofiber sequences which then repeat under Bott periodicity.

Differentials in the homological homotopy fixed point spectral sequence

We analyze in homological terms the homotopy fixed point spectrum of a T-equivariant commutative S-algebra R. There is a homological homotopy fixed point spectral sequence with E^2_{s,t} = H^{-s}_{gp}(T; H_t(R; F_p)), converging conditionally to the continuous homology H^c_{s+t}(R^{hT}; F_p) of the homotopy fixed point spectrum. We show that there are Dyer-Lashof operations beta^epsilon Q^i acting on this algebra spectral sequence, and that its differentials are completely determined by those originating on the vertical axis. More surprisingly, we show that for each class x in the $^{2r}-term of the spectral sequence there are 2r other classes in the E^{2r}-term (obtained mostly by Dyer-Lashof operations on x) that are infinite cycles, i.e., survive to the E^infty-term. We apply this to completely determine the differentials in the homological homotopy fixed point spectral sequences for the topological Hochschild homology spectra R = THH(B) of many S-algebras, including B = MU, BP, ku, ko and tmf. Similar results apply for all finite subgroups C of T, and for the Tate- and homotopy orbit spectral sequences. This work is part of a homological approach to calculating topological cyclic homology and algebraic K-theory of commutative S-algebras.

On behavior of the algebraic transfer

Let V be a mod 2 vector space of rank k. W. Singer defined a transfer homomorphism from the GL(k,2) coinvariants of the primitives in the homology of BV to the cohomology of the Steenrod algebra, as an algebraic version of the geometric transfer from the stable homotopy of BV to the stable homotopy of spheres. It has been shown that the algebraic transfer is highly nontrivial and, more precisely, that it is an isomorphism for k=1, 2, or 3. However, Singer showed that it is not an epimorphism for k=5. In this paper, we prove that it also fails to be an epimorphism when k=4. Precisely, it does not detect the non zero elements in the g family, in stems 20, 44, 92, and in general, 12*2^s - 4, for each s > 0. The transfer still fails to be an epimorphism even after inverting Sq^0, thereby giving a negative answer to a prediction by Minami.
