Ab initio many-body calculation of the 7Be(p,gamma)8B radiative capture

We apply the ab initio no-core shell model/resonating group method (NCSM/RGM) approach to calculate the cross section of the 7Be(p,gamma)8B radiative capture. This reaction is important for understanding the solar neutrino flux. Starting from a selected similarity-transformed chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction that accurately describes two-nucleon data, we performed parameter-free many-body calculations that simultaneously predict both the normalization and the shape of the S-factor. We study the dependence on the number of 7Be eigenstates included in the coupled-channel equations and on the size of the harmonic oscillator basis used for the expansion of the eigenstates and of the localized parts of the integration kernels. Our S-factor result at zero energy is on the lower side of, but consistent with, the latest evaluation.

Similarity-Transformed Chiral NN+3N Interactions for the Ab Initio Description of 12-C and 16-O

We present first ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) calculations using similarity renormalization group (SRG) transformed chiral two-nucleon (NN) plus three-nucleon (3N) interactions for nuclei throughout the p-shell, particularly 12-C and 16-O. By introducing an adaptive importance truncation for the NCSM model space and an efficient JT-coupling scheme for the 3N matrix elements, we are able to surpass previous NCSM studies including 3N interactions regarding, both, particle number and model-space size. We present ground and excited states in 12-C and 16-O for model spaces up to N_max=12 including full 3N interactions, which is sufficient to obtain converged results for soft SRG-transformed interactions. We analyze the contributions of induced and initial 3N interactions and probe induced 4N terms through the sensitivity of the energies on the SRG flow parameter. Unlike for light p-shell nuclei, SRG-induced 4N contributions originating from the long-range two-pion terms of the chiral 3N interaction are sizable in 12-C and 16-O.

Ab Initio Theory of Light-ion Reactions

The exact treatment of nuclei starting from the constituent nucleons and the fundamental interactions among them has been a long-standing goal in nuclear physics. Above all nuclear scattering and reactions, which require the solution of the many-body quantum-mechanical problem in the continuum, represent a theoretical and computational challenge for ab initio approaches. After a brief overview of the field, we present a new ab initio many-body approach capable of describing simultaneously both bound and scattering states in light nuclei. By combining the resonating-group method with the ab initio no-core shell model, we complement a microscopic cluster technique with the use of realistic interactions and a microscopic and consistent description of the clusters. We show results for neutron and proton scattering on light nuclei, including p-7Be and n-8He. We also highlight the first results of the d-3He and d-3H fusion calculations obtained within this approach.

Ab initio many-body calculations of nucleon scattering on 4He, 7Li, 7Be, 12C and 16O

We combine a recently developed ab initio many-body approach capable of describing simultaneously both bound and scattering states, the ab initio NCSM/RGM, with an importance truncation scheme for the cluster eigenstate basis and demostrate its applicability to nuclei with mass numbers as high as 17. Using soft similarity renormalization group evolved chiral nucleon-nucleon interactions, we first calculate nucleon-4He phase shifts, cross sections and analyzing power. Next, we investigate nucleon scattering on 7Li, 7Be, 12C and 16O in coupled-channel NCSM/RGM calculations that include low-lying excited states of these nuclei. We check the convergence of phase shifts with the basis size and study A=8, 13, and 17 bound and unbound states. Our calculations predict low-lying resonances in 8Li and 8B that have not been experimentally clearly identified yet. We are able to reproduce reasonably well the structure of the A=13 low lying states. However, we find that A=17 states cannot be described without an improved treatment of 16O one-particle-one-hole excitations and alpha clustering.

Ab-initio phase diagram of ultracold 87-Rb in an one-dimensional two-color superlattice

We investigate the ab-initio phase diagram of ultracold 87-Rb atoms in an one-dimensional two-color superlattice. Using single-particle band structure calculations we map the experimental setup onto the parameters of the Bose-Hubbard model. This ab-initio ansatz allows us to express the phase diagrams in terms of the experimental control parameters, i.e., the intensities of the lasers that form the optical superlattice. In order to solve the many-body problem for experimental system sizes we adopt the density-matrix renormalization-group algorithm. A detailed study of convergence and finite-size effects for all observables is presented. Our results show that all relevant quantum phases, i.e., superfluid, Mott-insulator, and quasi Bose-glass, can be accessed through intensity variation of the lasers alone. However, it turns out that the phase diagram is strongly affected by the longitudinal trapping potential.

Scattering of light nuclei

The exact treatment of nuclei starting from the constituent nucleons and the fundamental interactions among them has been a long-standing goal in nuclear physics. Above all nuclear scattering and reactions, which require the solution of the many-body quantum-mechanical problem in the continuum, represent an extraordinary theoretical as well as computational challenge for {\em ab initio} approaches. We present a new {\em ab initio} many-body approach which derives from the combination of the {\em ab initio} no-core shell model with the resonating-group method [4]. By complementing a microscopic cluster technique with the use of realistic interactions, and a microscopic and consistent description of the nucleon clusters, this approach is capable of describing simultaneously both bound and scattering states in light nuclei. We will discuss applications to neutron and proton scattering on $s$- and light $p$-shell nuclei using realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials, and outline the progress toward the treatment of more complex reactions.

Nuclear Structure in the Framework of the Unitary Correlation Operator Method

Correlations play a crucial role in the nuclear many-body problem. We give an overview of recent developments in nuclear structure theory aiming at the description of these interaction-induced correlations by unitary transformations. We focus on the Unitary Correlation Operator Method (UCOM), which offers a very intuitive, universal and robust approach for the treatment of short-range correlations. We discuss the UCOM formalism in detail and highlight the connections to other methods for the description of short-range correlations and the construction of effective interactions. In particular, we juxtapose UCOM with the Similarity Renormalization Group (SRG) approach, which implements the unitary transformation of the Hamiltonian through a very flexible flow-equation formulation. The UCOM- and SRG-transformed interactions are compared on the level of matrix elements and in many-body calculations within the no-core shell model and with Hartree-Fock plus perturbation theory for a variety of nuclei and observables. These calculations provide a detailed picture of the similarities and differences as well as the advantages and limitations of unitary transformation methods.

Pade-resummed high-order perturbation theory for nuclear structure calculations

We apply high-order many-body perturbation theory for the calculation of ground-state energies of closed-shell nuclei using realistic nuclear interactions. Using a simple recursive formulation, we compute the perturbative energy contributions up to 30th order and compare to exact no-core shell model calculations for the same model space and Hamiltonian. Generally, finite partial sums of this perturbation series do not show convergence with increasing order, but tend to diverge exponentially. Nevertheless, through a simple resummation via Pade approximants it is possible to extract rapidly converging and highly accurate results for the ground state energy.

Center-of-mass problem in truncated configuration interaction and coupled-cluster calculations

The problem of center-of-mass (CM) contaminations in ab initio nuclear structure calculations using configuration interaction (CI) and coupled-cluster (CC) approaches is analyzed. A rigorous and quantitative scheme for diagnosing the CM contamination of intrinsic observables is proposed and applied to ground-state calculations for He-4 and O-16. The CI and CC calculations for O-16 based on model spaces defined via a truncation of the single-particle basis lead to sizable CM contaminations, while the importance-truncated no-core shell model based on the $N_{\max}\hbarΩ$ space is virtually free of CM contaminations.

Phase Diagram of Bosons in Two-Color Superlattices from Experimental Parameters

We study the zero-temperature phase diagram of a gas of bosonic 87-Rb atoms in two-color superlattice potentials starting directly from the experimental parameters, such as wavelengths and intensities of the two lasers generating the superlattice. In a first step, we map the experimental setup to a Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian with site-dependent parameters through explicit band-structure calculations. In the second step, we solve the many-body problem using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) approach and compute observables such as energy gap, condensate fraction, maximum number fluctuations and visibility of interference fringes. We study the phase diagram as function of the laser intensities s_2 and s_1 as control parameters and show that all relevant quantum phases, i.e. superfluid, Mott-insulator, and quasi Bose-glass phase, and the transitions between them can be investigated through a variation of these intensities alone.

Importance Truncation for Large-Scale Configuration Interaction Approaches

We introduce an iterative importance truncation scheme which aims at reducing the dimension of the model space of configuration interaction approaches by an a priori selection of the physically most relevant basis states. Using an importance measure derived from multiconfigurational perturbation theory in combination with an importance threshold, we construct a model space optimized for the description of individual eigenstates of a given Hamiltonian. We discuss in detail various technical aspects and refinements of the importance truncation, such as perturbative corrections for excluded basis states, threshold extrapolation techniques, and different iterative model-space update schemes. We apply the idea of the importance truncation in the context of the no-core shell model (NCSM) for the ab initio description of nuclear ground states. In a series of benchmark calculations for closed- and open-shell nuclei up to O-16 we compare the ground-state energies obtained in the importance truncated NCSM to the full NCSM. All calculations show an excellent agreement of importance truncated and full NCSM for all cases where the latter is feasible. The results demonstrate that the importance truncated NCSM, while preserving most of the advantages of the full NCSM, gives access to much larger N_max*hbar*Omega spaces and heavier nuclei. In this way we are able to perform importance truncated NCSM calculations for nuclei like C-12 and O-16 up to N_max=22.

Ultracold Bose gases in time-dependent 1D superlattices: response and quasimomentum structure

The response of ultracold atomic Bose gases in time-dependent optical lattices is discussed based on direct simulations of the time-evolution of the many-body state in the framework of the Bose-Hubbard model. We focus on small-amplitude modulations of the lattice potential as implemented in several recent experiment and study different observables in the region of the first resonance in the Mott-insulator phase. In addition to the energy transfer we investigate the quasimomentum structure of the system which is accessible via the matter-wave interference pattern after a prompt release. We identify characteristic correlations between the excitation frequency and the quasimomentum distribution and study their structure in the presence of a superlattice potential.

Nuclear Structure - "ab initio"

An ab-initio description of atomic nuclei that solves the nuclear many-body problem for realistic nuclear forces is expected to possess a high degree of predictive power. In this contribution we treat the main obstacle, namely the short-ranged repulsive and tensor correlations induced by the realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction, by means of a unitary correlation operator. This correlator applied to uncorrelated many-body states imprints short-ranged correlations that cannot be described by product states. When applied to an observable it induces the correlations into the operator, creating for example a correlated Hamiltonian suited for Slater determinants. Adding to the correlated realistic interaction a correction for three-body effects, consisting of a momentum-dependent central and spin-orbit two-body potential we obtain an effective interaction that is successfully used for all nuclei up to mass 60. Various results are shown.

Bogoliubov approach to superfluidity of atoms in an optical lattice

We use the Bogoliubov theory of atoms in an optical lattice to study the approach to the Mott-insulator transition. We derive an explicit expression for the superfluid density based on the rigidity of the system under phase variations. This enables us to explore the connection between the quantum depletion of the condensate and the quasi-momentum distribution on the one hand and the superfluid fraction on the other. The approach to the insulator phase may be characterized through the filling of the band by quantum depletion, which should be directly observable via the matter wave interference patterns. We complement these findings by self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov-Popov calculations for one-dimensional lattices including the effects of a parabolic trapping potential.

Structure and stability of trapped atomic boson-fermion mixtures

The structure of binary mixtures of bosonic and fermionic atoms in an external trapping potential at zero temperature is studied on the basis of a modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the bosonic component which self-consistently includes the mean-field interaction generated by the fermionic cloud. The density of the fermionic component is described within the Thomas-Fermi approximation. The influence of the boson-boson and the boson-fermion s-wave interaction on the density profiles and the stability of the mixture is investigated systematically. Critical particle numbers for the mean-field collapse caused either by attractive boson-boson or by attractive boson-fermion interactions and for the onset of spatial component separation are discussed. It is shown that the interplay between the boson-boson and the boson-fermion interaction generates a rich and complex phase diagram. Finally, the specific properties and prospects of the boson-fermion mixtures available in present experiments are addressed.
