Sailing League Problems

We describe a class of combinatorial design problems which typically occur in professional sailing league competitions. We discuss connections to resolvable block designs and equitable coverings and to scheduling problems in operations research. We in particular give suitable boolean quadratic and integer linear optimization problem formulations, as well as further heuristics and restrictions, that can be used to solve sailing league problems in practice. We apply those techniques to three case studies obtained from real sailing leagues and compare the results with previously used tournament plans.

Bounds on polarization problems on compact sets via mixed integer programming

Finding point configurations, that yield the maximum polarization (Chebyshev constant) is gaining interest in the field of geometric optimization. In the present article, we study the problem of unconstrained maximum polarization on compact sets. In particular, we discuss necessary conditions for local optimality, such as that a locally optimal configuration is always contained in the convex hull of the respective darkest points. Building on this, we propose two sequences of mixed-integer linear programs in order to compute lower and upper bounds on the maximal polarization, where the lower bound is constructive. Moreover, we prove the convergence of these sequences towards the maximal polarization.

Formal self duality

We study the notion of formal self duality in finite abelian groups. Formal duality in finite abelian groups has been proposed by Cohn, Kumar, Reiher and Schürmann. In this paper we give a precise definition of formally self dual sets and discuss results from the literature in this perspective. Also, we discuss the connection to formally dual codes. We prove that formally self dual sets can be reduced to primitive formally self dual sets similar to a previously known result on general formally dual sets. Furthermore, we describe several properties of formally self dual sets. Also, some new examples of formally self dual sets are presented within this paper. Lastly, we study formally self dual sets of the form $\{(x,F(x)) \ : \ x\in\mathbb{F}_{2^n}\}$ where $F$ is a vectorial Boolean function mapping $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ to $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$.

$f$-vectors of $3$-polytopes symmetric under rotations and rotary reflections

The $f$-vector of a polytope consists of the numbers of its $i$-dimensional faces. An open field of study is the characterization of all possible $f$-vectors. It has been solved in three dimensions by Steinitz in the early 19th century. We state a related question, i.e. to characterize $f$-vectors of three dimensional polytopes respecting a symmetry, given by a finite group of matrices. We give a full answer for all three dimensional polytopes that are symmetric with respect to a finite rotation or rotary reflection group. We solve these cases constructively by developing tools that generalize Steinitz's approach.

Formal Duality in Finite Abelian Groups

Inspired by an experimental study of energy-minimizing periodic configurations in Euclidean space, Cohn, Kumar and Schürmann proposed the concept of formal duality between a pair of periodic configurations, which indicates an unexpected symmetry possessed by the energy-minimizing periodic configurations. Later on, Cohn, Kumar, Reiher and Schürmann translated the formal duality between a pair of periodic configurations into the formal duality of a pair of subsets in a finite abelian group. This insight suggests to study the combinatorial counterpart of formal duality, which is a configuration named formally dual pair. In this paper, we initiate a systematic investigation on formally dual pairs in finite abelian groups, which involves basic concepts, constructions, characterizations and nonexistence results. In contrast to the belief that primitive formally dual pairs are very rare in cyclic groups, we construct three families of primitive formally dual pairs in noncyclic groups. These constructions enlighten us to propose the concept of even sets, which reveals more structural information about formally dual pairs and leads to a characterization of rank three primitive formally dual pairs. Finally, we derive some nonexistence results about primitive formally dual pairs, which are in favor of the main conjecture that except two small examples, no primitive formally dual pair exists in cyclic groups.

Formal-dual subsets of cyclic groups of prime power order

We study the notion of formal-duality over finite cyclic groups of prime power order as introduced by Cohn, Kumar, Reiher and Schürmann. We will prove that for any cyclic group of odd prime power order, as well as for any cyclic group of order $2^{2l+1}$, there is no primitive pair of formally-dual subsets. This partially proves a conjecture, made by the priorly mentioned authors, that the only cyclic groups with a pair of primitive formally-dual subsets are $\{0\}$ and $\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z}$.
