Nonlinear wave equations with slowly decaying initial data

New local smoothing estimates in Besov spaces adapted to the half-wave group are proved via $\ell^2$-decoupling. We apply these estimates to obtain new well-posedness results for the cubic nonlinear wave equation in two dimensions. The results are compared to new well-posedness results in $L^p$-based Sobolev spaces.

Strichartz estimates for Maxwell equations in media: The fully anisotropic case

We prove Strichartz estimates for Maxwell equations in media in the fully anisotropic case with Hölder-continuous coefficients. To this end, we use the FBI transform to conjugate the problem to phase space. After reducing to a scalar estimate by means of a matrix symmetrizer, we show oscillatory integral estimates for a variable-coefficient Fourier extension operator. The characteristic surface has conical singularities for any non-vanishing time frequency. Combined with energy estimates, we improve the local well-posedness for certain fully anisotropic quasilinear Maxwell equations.

Strichartz estimates for Maxwell equations in media: The partially anisotropic case

We prove Strichartz estimates for solutions to Maxwell equations in three dimensions with rough permittivities, which have less than three different eigenvalues. To this end, Maxwell equations are conjugated to half-wave equations in phase space. We use the Strichartz estimates in a known combination with energy estimates to show the new well-posedness results for quasilinear Maxwell equations.

Time-harmonic solutions for Maxwell's equations in anisotropic media and Bochner-Riesz estimates with negative index for non-elliptic surfaces

We solve time-harmonic Maxwell's equations in anisotropic, spatially homogeneous media in intersections of $L^p$-spaces. The material laws are time-independent. The analysis requires Fourier restriction-extension estimates for perturbations of Fresnel's wave surface. This surface can be decomposed into finitely many components of the following three types: smooth surfaces with non-vanishing Gaussian curvature, smooth surfaces with Gaussian curvature vanishing along one-dimensional submanifolds, but without flat points, and surfaces with conical singularities. Our estimates are based on new Bochner-Riesz estimates with negative index for non-elliptic surfaces.

Resolvent estimates for time-harmonic Maxwell's equations in the partially anisotropic case

We prove resolvent estimates in $L^p$-spaces for time-harmonic Maxwell's equations in two spatial dimensions and in three dimensions in the partially anisotropic case. In the two-dimensional case the estimates are sharp up to endpoints. We consider anisotropic permittivity and permeability, which are both taken to be time-independent and spatially homogeneous. For the proof we diagonalize time-harmonic Maxwell's equations to equations involving Half-Laplacians. We apply these estimates to infer a Limiting Absorption Principle in intersections of $L^p$-spaces and to localize eigenvalues for perturbations by potentials.

On smoothing estimates in modulation spaces and the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with slowly decaying initial data

We show new local $L^p$-smoothing estimates for the Schrödinger equation with initial data in modulation spaces via decoupling inequalities. Furthermore, we probe necessary conditions by Knapp-type examples for space-time estimates of solutions with initial data in modulation and $L^p$-spaces. The examples show sharpness of the smoothing estimates up to the endpoint regularity in a certain range. Moreover, the examples rule out global Strichartz estimates for initial data in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ for $d \geq 1$ and $p > 2$, which was previously known for $d \geq 2$. The estimates are applied to show new local and global well-posedness results for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the line. Lastly, we show $\ell^2$-decoupling inequalities for variable-coefficient versions of elliptic and non-elliptic Schrödinger phase functions.

On quasilinear Maxwell equations in two dimensions

New sharp Strichartz estimates for the Maxwell system in two dimensions with rough permittivity and non-trivial charges are proved. We use the FBI transform to carry out the analysis in phase space. For this purpose, the Maxwell equations are conjugated to a system of half-wave equations with rough coefficients. For this system, Strichartz estimates are similarly derived as in previous work by Tataru on scalar wave equations with rough coefficients. We use the estimates to improve the local well-posedness theory for quasilinear Maxwell equations in two dimensions.

Improved resolvent estimates for constant-coefficient elliptic operators in three dimensions

We prove new $L^p$-$L^q$-estimates for solutions to elliptic differential operators with constant coefficients in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We use the estimates for the decay of the Fourier transform of particular surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with vanishing Gaussian curvature due to Erdős--Salmhofer to derive new Fourier restriction--extension estimates. These allow for constructing distributional solutions in $L^q(\mathbb{R}^3)$ for $L^p$-data via limiting absorption by well-known means.

A priori estimates for the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We prove low regularity a priori estimates for the derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation in Besov spaces with positive regularity index conditional upon small $L^2$-norm. This covers the full subcritical range. We use the power series expansion of the perturbation determinant introduced by Killip--Vişan--Zhang for completely integrable PDE. This makes it possible to derive low regularity conservation laws from the perturbation determinant.

Fourier transform of surface--carried measures of two-dimensional generic surfaces and applications

We give a simple proof of the sharp decay of the Fourier-transform of surface-carried measures of two-dimensional generic surfaces. The estimates are applied to prove Strichartz and resolvent estimates for elliptic operators whose characteristic surfaces satisfy the generic assumptions. We also obtain new results on the spectral and scattering theory of discrete Schrödinger operators on the cubic lattice.

On Strichartz estimates from decoupling and applications

Strichartz estimates are derived from $\ell^2$-decoupling for phase functions satisfying a curvature condition. Bilinear refinements without loss in the high frequency are discussed. Estimates are established from uniform curvature generalizing Galilean invariance or from transversality in one dimension. The bilinear refinements are utilized to prove local well-posedness for generalized cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equations.

Low regularity well-posedness for generalized Benjamin-Ono equations on the circle

New low regularity well-posedness results for the generalized Benjamin-Ono equations with quartic or higher nonlinearity and periodic boundary conditions are shown. We use the short-time Fourier transform restriction method and modified energies to overcome the derivative loss. Previously, Molinet--Ribaud established local well-posedness in $H^{1}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$ via gauge transforms. We show local existence and a priori estimates in $H^{s}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$, $s>1/2$, and local well-posedness in $H^{s}(\mathbb{T},\mathbb{R})$, $s\geq3/4$ without using gauge transforms. In case of quartic nonlinearity we prove global existence of solutions conditional upon small initial data.

Eigenvalues of the normalized complex Laplacian on finite electrical networks

The spectrum of the normalized complex Laplacian for electrical networks is analyzed. We show that eigenvalues lie in a larger region compared to the case of the real Laplacian. We show the existence of eigenvalues with negative real part and absolute value greater than 2. An estimate from below for the first non-vanishing eigenvalue in modulus is provided. We supplement the estimates with examples, showing sharpness.

On a priori estimates and existence of periodic solutions to the modified Benjamin-Ono equation below $H^{1/2}(\mathbb{T})$

A priori estimates and existence of real-valued periodic solutions to the modified Benjamin-Ono equation with initial data in $H^s$ for $s>1/4$ are proved locally in time. The approach relies on frequency dependent time localization, after which dispersive properties from Euclidean space are recovered. The same regularity results are proved for the cubic derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation.
