High-Temporal-Resolution Measurements of the Impacts of Ionizing Radiation on Superconducting Qubits

We measure the effect of ionizing radiation on superconducting qubits with a timing resolution of 1 $\mu s$ using microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) fabricated on the same substrate. We observe no correlation between two-level system (TLS) scrambling events and ionizing radiation events detected with the MKIDs, suggesting TLS scrambling events may not arise from ionizing radiation and instead the previously reported apparent correlation may be due to events without sufficient energy to trigger our MKIDs. We characterize the fast-time system recovery of transmons following a radiation event, where we observe the recovery of the enhanced qubit relaxation and excitation to be well-described by an exponential recovery to the baseline quasiparticle density, with a characteristic time of $13\pm1\ \mu$s, and a peak quasiparticle density at the junction per deposited energy of $240/\mu m^3/MeV$. The fast recovery is consistent with literature reported values for Nb-based devices with direct injection of 2$\Delta_{\text{Al}}$ phonons, demonstrating the recovery is strongly dependent on the proximity of niobium to the junction.

On the Dynamic Interplay between Positive and Negative Affects

Emotional disorders and psychological flourishing are the result of complex interactions between positive and negative affects that depend on external events and the subject's internal representations. Based on psychological data, we mathematically model the dynamical balance between positive and negative affects as a function of the response to external positive and negative events. This modeling allows the investigation of the relative impact of two leading forms of therapy on affect balance. The model uses a delay differential equation to analytically study the complete bifurcation diagram of the system. We compare the results of the model to psychological data on a single, recurrently depressed patient that was administered the two types of therapies considered (viz., coping-focused vs. affect-focused). The model leads to the prediction that stabilization at a normal state may rely on evaluating one's emotional state through an historical ongoing emotional state rather than in a narrow present window. The simple mathematical model proposed here offers a theoretically grounded quantitative framework for investigating the temporal process of change and parameters of resilience to relapse.

Simulation and Analysis of TE Wave Propagation as a Probe for Electron Clouds in Particle Accelerators

The use of transverse electric (TE) waves has proved to be a powerful, noninvasive method for estimating the densities of electron clouds formed in particle accelerators. Results from the plasma simulation program VORPAL have been a useful guide for experimental studies related to this method, which have been performed at various accelerator facilities. This paper provides results of the simulation and modeling work done in conjunction with experimental efforts carried out at CesrTA. The discussion starts from the phase shift induced by electron clouds in the transmission of the wave, followed by the effect of reflections along the beam-pipe, the simulation of the resonant wave method and the effects of external magnetic fields, namely dipoles and wigglers. A derivation of the dispersion relationship of wave propagation for arbitrary geometries in field free regions with a uniform cloud density is also provided.

New Permutation Representations of the Braid Group

We give a new infinite family of group homomorphisms from the braid group B_k to the symmetric group S_{mk} for all k and m \geq 2. Most known permutation representations of braids are included in this family. We prove that the homomorphisms in this family are non-cyclic and transitive. For any divisor l of m, 1\leq l < m, we prove in particular that if \frac{m}{l} is odd then there are 1 + \frac{m}{l} non-conjugate homomorphisms included in our family. We define a certain natural restriction on homomorphisms B_k to S_n, common to all homomorphisms in our family, which we term 'good', and of which there are two types. We prove that all good homomorphisms B_k to S_{mk} of type 1 are included in the infinite family of homomorphisms we gave. For m=3, we prove that all good homomorphisms B_k to S_{3k} of type 2 are also included in this family. Finally, we refute a conjecture made by Matei and Suciu regarding permutation representations of braids and give an updated conjecture.
