Hot Topics in Cold Gases

Since the first experimental realization of Bose-Einstein condensation in cold atomic gases in 1995 there has been a surge of activity in this field. Ingenious experiments have allowed us to probe matter close to zero temperature and reveal some of the fascinating effects quantum mechanics has bestowed on nature. It is a challenge for mathematical physicists to understand these various phenomena from first principles, that is, starting from the underlying many-body Schrödinger equation. Recent progress in this direction concerns mainly equilibrium properties of dilute, cold quantum gases. We shall explain some of the results in this article, and describe the mathematics involved in understanding these phenomena. Topics include the ground state energy and the free energy at positive temperature, the effect of interparticle interaction on the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation, as well as the occurrence of superfluidity and quantized vortices in rapidly rotating gases.

Rigorous Upper Bound on the Critical Temperature of Dilute Bose Gases

We prove exponential decay of the off-diagonal correlation function in the two-dimensional homogeneous Bose gas when a^2 ρis small and the temperature T satisfies T > 4 πρ/ \ln |\ln(a^2ρ). Here, a is the scattering length of the repulsive interaction potential and ρis the density. To leading order in a^2 ρ, this bound agrees with the expected critical temperature for superfluidity. In the three-dimensional Bose gas, exponential decay is proved when ΔT_c / T_c^0 > 5 \sqrt{a ρ^{1/3}}, where T_c^0 is the critical temperature of the ideal gas. While this condition is not expected to be sharp, it gives a rigorous upper bound on the critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation.

Strongly correlated phases in rapidly rotating Bose gases

We consider a system of trapped spinless bosons interacting with a repulsive potential and subject to rotation. In the limit of rapid rotation and small scattering length, we rigorously show that the ground state energy converges to that of a simplified model Hamiltonian with contact interaction projected onto the Lowest Landau Level. This effective Hamiltonian models the bosonic analogue of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect (FQHE). For a fixed number of particles, we also prove convergence of states; in particular, in a certain regime we show convergence towards the bosonic Laughlin wavefunction. This is the first rigorous justification of the effective FQHE Hamiltonian for rapidly rotating Bose gases. We review previous results on this effective Hamiltonian and outline open problems.

The Yrast Line of a Rapidly Rotating Bose Gas: Gross-Pitaevskii Regime

We consider an ultracold rotating Bose gas in a harmonic trap close to the critical angular velocity so that the system can be considered to be confined to the lowest Landau level. With this assumption we prove that the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional accurately describes the ground state energy of the corresponding $N$-body Hamiltonian with contact interaction provided the total angular momentum $L$ is much less than $N^2$. While the Gross-Pitaevskii energy is always an obvious variational upper bound to the ground state energy, a more refined analysis is needed to establish it as an exact lower bound. We also discuss the question of Bose-Einstein condensation in the parameter range considered. Coherent states together with inequalities in spaces of analytic functions are the main technical tools.

Non-linear ground state representations and sharp Hardy inequalities

We determine the sharp constant in the Hardy inequality for fractional Sobolev spaces. To do so, we develop a non-linear and non-local version of the ground state representation, which even yields a remainder term. From the sharp Hardy inequality we deduce the sharp constant in a Sobolev embedding which is optimal in the Lorentz scale. In the appendix, we characterize the cases of equality in the rearrangement inequality in fractional Sobolev spaces.

The ground state energy of the weakly interacting Bose gas at high density

We prove the Lee-Huang-Yang formula for the ground state energy of the 3D Bose gas with repulsive interactions described by the exponential function, in a simultaneous limit of weak coupling and high density. In particular, we show that the Bogoliubov approximation is exact in an appropriate parameter regime, as far as the ground state energy is concerned.

Critical Temperature and Energy Gap for the BCS Equation

We derive upper and lower bounds on the critical temperature $T_c$ and the energy gap $Ξ$ (at zero temperature) for the BCS gap equation, describing spin 1/2 fermions interacting via a local two-body interaction potential $λV(x)$. At weak coupling $λ\ll 1$ and under appropriate assumptions on $V(x)$, our bounds show that $T_c \sim A \exp(-B/λ)$ and $Ξ\sim C \exp(-B/λ)$ for some explicit coefficients $A$, $B$ and $C$ depending on the interaction $V(x)$ and the chemical potential $μ$. The ratio $A/C$ turns out to be a universal constant, independent of both $V(x)$ and $μ$. Our analysis is valid for any $μ$; for small $μ$, or low density, our formulas reduce to well-known expressions involving the scattering length of $V(x)$.

The BCS Critical Temperature for Potentials with Negative Scattering Length

We prove that the critical temperature for the BCS gap equation is given by $T_c = μ(8/πe^{γ-2} + o(1)) e^{π/(2\sqrt μa)}$ in the low density limit $μ\to 0$. The formula holds for a suitable class of interaction potentials with negative scattering length $a$ in the absence of bound states.

A Nonlinear Model for Relativistic Electrons at Positive Temperature

We study the relativistic electron-positron field at positive temperature in the Hartree-Fock-approximation. We consider both the case with and without exchange term, and investigate the existence and properties of minimizers. Our approach is non-perturbative in the sense that the relevant electron subspace is determined in a self-consistent way. The present work is an extension of previous work by Hainzl, Lewin, Séré, and Solovej where the case of zero temperature was considered.

Spectral properties of the BCS gap equation of superfluidity

We present a review of recent work on the mathematical aspects of the BCS gap equation, covering our results of [arXiv:0801.4159] as well our recent joint work with Hamza and Solovej [arXiv:math-ph/0703086] and with Frank and Naboko [arXiv:0704.3564], respectively. In addition, we mention some related new results.

Vortices and Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Rotating Bose Gases

We present a rigorous proof of the appearance of quantized vortices in dilute trapped Bose gases with repulsive two-body interactions subject to rotation, which was obtained recently in joint work with Elliott Lieb. Starting from the many-body Schroedinger equation, we show that the ground state of such gases is, in a suitable limit, well described by the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In the case of axially symmetric traps, our results show that the appearance of quantized vortices causes spontaneous symmetry breaking in the ground state.

Ground state energy of the low density Hubbard model

We derive a lower bound on the ground state energy of the Hubbard model for given value of the total spin. In combination with the upper bound derived previously by Giuliani, our result proves that in the low density limit, the leading order correction compared to the ground state energy of a non-interacting lattice Fermi gas is given by $8πa ρ_u ρ_d$, where $ρ_{u(d)}$ denotes the density of the spin-up (down) particles, and $a$ is the scattering length of the contact interaction potential. This result extends previous work on the corresponding continuum model to the lattice case.

The BCS Functional for General Pair Interactions

The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) functional has recently received renewed attention as a description of fermionic gases interacting with local pairwise interactions. We present here a rigorous analysis of the BCS functional for general pair interaction potentials. For both zero and positive temperature, we show that the existence of a non-trivial solution of the nonlinear BCS gap equation is equivalent to the existence of a negative eigenvalue of a certain linear operator. From this we conclude the existence of a critical temperature below which the BCS pairing wave function does not vanish identically. For attractive potentials, we prove that the critical temperature is non-zero and exponentially small in the strength of the potential.

The critical temperature for the BCS equation at weak coupling

For the BCS equation with local two-body interaction $λV(x)$, we give a rigorous analysis of the asymptotic behavior of the critical temperature as $λ\to 0$. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions on $V(x)$ for the existence of a non-trivial solution for all values of $λ>0$.

Probabilistic coherence and proper scoring rules

We provide self-contained proof of a theorem relating probabilistic coherence of forecasts to their non-domination by rival forecasts with respect to any proper scoring rule. The theorem appears to be new but is closely related to results achieved by other investigators.
