On Properties of the Ising Model for Complex Energy/Temperature and Magnetic Field

We study some properties of the Ising model in the plane of the complex (energy/temperature)-dependent variable $u=e^{-4K}$, where $K=J/(k_BT)$, for nonzero external magnetic field, $H$. Exact results are given for the phase diagram in the $u$ plane for the model in one dimension and on infinite-length quasi-one-dimensional strips. In the case of real $h=H/(k_BT)$, these results provide new insights into features of our earlier study of this case. We also consider complex $h=H/(k_BT)$ and $μ=e^{-2h}$. Calculations of complex-$u$ zeros of the partition function on sections of the square lattice are presented. For the case of imaginary $h$, i.e., $μ=e^{iθ}$, we use exact results for the quasi-1D strips together with these partition function zeros for the model in 2D to infer some properties of the resultant phase diagram in the $u$ plane. We find that in this case, the phase boundary ${\cal B}_u$ contains a real line segment extending through part of the physical ferromagnetic interval $0 \le u \le 1$, with a right-hand endpoint $u_{rhe}$ at the temperature for which the Yang-Lee edge singularity occurs at $μ=e^{\pm iθ}$. Conformal field theory arguments are used to relate the singularities at $u_{rhe}$ and the Yang-Lee edge.

Gauge-Invariant Quantities Characterizing Gauge Fields in Chromodynamics

We calculate Lorentz-invariant and gauge-invariant quantities characterizing the product $\sum_a D_R(T^a) F^a_{μν}$, where $D_R(T^a)$ denotes the matrix for the generator $T^a$ in the representation $R=$ fundamental and adjoint, for color SU(3). We also present analogous results for an SU(2) gauge theory.

Z Boson Propagator Correction in Technicolor Theories with ETC Effects Included

We calculate the Z boson propagator correction, as described by the S parameter, in technicolor theories with extended technicolor interactions included. Our method is to solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the requisite current-current correlation functions. Our results suggest that the inclusion of extended technicolor interactions has a relatively small effect on S.

Constraints on $N_c$ in Extensions of the Standard Model

We consider a class of theories involving an extension of the Standard Model gauge group to an {\it a priori} arbitrary number of colors, $N_c$, and derive constraints on $N_c$. One motivation for this is the string theory landscape. For two natural classes of embeddings of this $N_c$-extended Standard Model in a supersymmetric grand unified theory, we show that requiring unbroken electromagnetic gauge invariance, asymptotic freedom of color, and three generations of quarks and leptons forces one to choose $N_c=3$. Similarly, we show that for a theory combining the $N_c$-extended Standard Model with a one-family SU(2)$_{TC}$ technicolor theory, only the value $N_c=3$ is allowed.

Study of the Change from Walking to Non-Walking Behavior in a Vectorial Gauge Theory as a Function of N_f

Based on recent works [1,2], we present the results of calculations for several physical quantities (meson masses, the S parameter, etc.) in a vectorial gauge theory, as a function of the number of fermions, N_f. Solutions of the Schwinger-Dyson and the Bethe-Salpeter equations with the improved ladder approximation are used for the calculations. We focus on how the values of physical quantities change as one moves from the QCD-like (non-walking) to walking regimes.

Exact Potts Model Partition Functions for Strips of the Honeycomb Lattice

We present exact calculations of the Potts model partition function $Z(G,q,v)$ for arbitrary $q$ and temperature-like variable $v$ on $n$-vertex strip graphs $G$ of the honeycomb lattice for a variety of transverse widths equal to $L_y$ vertices and for arbitrarily great length, with free longitudinal boundary conditions and free and periodic transverse boundary conditions. These partition functions have the form $Z(G,q,v)=\sum_{j=1}^{N_{Z,G,λ}} c_{Z,G,j}(λ_{Z,G,j})^m$, where $m$ denotes the number of repeated subgraphs in the longitudinal direction. We give general formulas for $N_{Z,G,j}$ for arbitrary $L_y$. We also present plots of zeros of the partition function in the $q$ plane for various values of $v$ and in the $v$ plane for various values of $q$. Explicit results for partition functions are given in the text for $L_y=2,3$ (free) and $L_y=4$ (cylindrical), and plots of partition function zeros are given for $L_y$ up to 5 (free) and $L_y=6$ (cylindrical). Plots of the internal energy and specific heat per site for infinite-length strips are also presented.

Behavior of the S Parameter in the Crossover Region Between Walking and QCD-Like Regimes of an SU(N) Gauge Theory

We consider a vectorial, confining SU(N) gauge theory with a variable number, $N_f$, of massless fermions transforming according to the fundamental representation. Using the Schwinger-Dyson and Bethe-Salpeter equations, we calculate the $S$ parameter in terms of the current-current correlation functions. We focus on values of $N_f$ such that the theory is in the crossover region between the regimes of walking behavior and QCD-like (non-walking) behavior. Our calculations indicate that the contribution to $S$ from a given fermion decreases as one moves from the QCD-like to the walking regimes. The implications of this result for technicolor theories are discussed.

Study of the Change from Walking to Non-Walking Behavior in a Vectorial Gauge Theory as a Function of Nf

We study a vectorial gauge theory with gauge group SU(Nc) and a variable number, Nf, of massless fermions in the fundamental representation of this group. Using approximate solutions of Schwinger-Dyson and Bethe-Salpeter equations, we calculate meson masses and investigate how these depend on Nf. We focus on the range of Nf extending from near the boundary with a non-Abelian Coulomb phase, where the theory exhibits a slowly running ("walking") gauge coupling, toward smaller values where the theory has non-walking behavior. Our results include determinations of the masses of the lowest-lying flavor-adjoint mesons with J^{PC} = 0^{-+}, 1^{--}, 0^{++}, and 1^{++} (the generalized π, ρ, a0, and a1). Related results are given for flavor-singlet mesons and for the generalization of f_π. These results give insight into the change from walking to non-walking behavior in a gauge theory, as a function of Nf .

Extended Technicolor Models with Two ETC Groups

We construct extended technicolor (ETC) models that can produce the large splitting between the masses of the $t$ and $b$ quarks without necessarily excessive contributions to the $ρ$ parameter or to neutral flavor-changing processes. These models make use of two different ETC gauge groups, such that left- and right-handed components of charge $Q=2/3$ quarks transform under the same ETC group, while left- and right-handed components of charge -1/3 quarks and charged leptons transform under different ETC groups. The models thereby suppress the masses $m_b$ and $m_τ$ relative to $m_t$, and $m_s$ and $m_μ$ relative to $m_c$ because the masses of the $Q=-1/3$ quarks and charged leptons require mixing between the two ETC groups, while the masses of the $Q=2/3$ quarks do not. A related source of the differences between these mass splittings is the effect of the two hierarchies of breaking scales of the two ETC groups. We analyze a particular model of this type in some detail. Although we find that this model tends to suppress the masses of the first two generations of down-type quarks and charged leptons too much, it gives useful insights into the properties of theories with more than one ETC group.

Some Exact Results for Spanning Trees on Lattices

For $n$-vertex, $d$-dimensional lattices $Λ$ with $d \ge 2$, the number of spanning trees $N_{ST}(Λ)$ grows asymptotically as $\exp(n z_Λ)$ in the thermodynamic limit. We present an exact closed-form result for the asymptotic growth constant $z_{bcc(d)}$ for spanning trees on the $d$-dimensional body-centered cubic lattice. We also give an exact integral expression for $z_{fcc}$ on the face-centered cubic lattice and an exact closed-form expression for $z_{488}$ on the $4 \cdot 8 \cdot 8$ lattice.

Partition Function Zeros of a Restricted Potts Model on Lattice Strips and Effects of Boundary Conditions

We calculate the partition function $Z(G,Q,v)$ of the $Q$-state Potts model exactly for strips of the square and triangular lattices of various widths $L_y$ and arbitrarily great lengths $L_x$, with a variety of boundary conditions, and with $Q$ and $v$ restricted to satisfy conditions corresponding to the ferromagnetic phase transition on the associated two-dimensional lattices. From these calculations, in the limit $L_x \to \infty$, we determine the continuous accumulation loci ${\cal B}$ of the partition function zeros in the $v$ and $Q$ planes. Strips of the honeycomb lattice are also considered. We discuss some general features of these loci.

Partition Function Zeros of a Restricted Potts Model on Self-Dual Strips of the Square Lattice

We calculate the partition function $Z(G,Q,v)$ of the $Q$-state Potts model exactly for self-dual cyclic square-lattice strips of various widths $L_y$ and arbitrarily great lengths $L_x$, with $Q$ and $v$ restricted to satisfy the relation $Q=v^2$. From these calculations, in the limit $L_x \to \infty$, we determine the continuous accumulation locus ${\cal B}$ of the partition function zeros in the $v$ and $Q$ planes. A number of interesting features of this locus are discussed and a conjecture is given for properties applicable for arbitrarily great width. Relations with the loci ${\cal B}$ for general $Q$ and $v$ are analyzed.

Zeros of the Potts Model Partition Function in the Large-$q$ Limit

We study the zeros of the $q$-state Potts model partition function $Z(Λ,q,v)$ for large $q$, where $v$ is the temperature variable and $Λ$ is a section of a regular $d$-dimensional lattice with coordination number $κ_Λ$ and various boundary conditions. We consider the simultaneous thermodynamic limit and $q \to \infty$ limit and show that when these limits are taken appropriately, the zeros lie on the unit circle $|x_Λ|=1$ in the complex $x_Λ$ plane, where $x_Λ=v q^{-2/κ_Λ}$. For large finite sections of some lattices we also determine the circular loci near which the zeros lie for large $q$.

Technifermion Representations and Precision Electroweak Constraints

We discuss the selection of fermion representations in technicolor models with a view toward minimizing technicolor contributions to the precision electroweak $S$ parameter. We present and analyze models that involve one technifermion SU(2)$_L$ doublet with standard-model singlet technifermion sectors that lead to walking behavior, which further reduces $S$. We also consider models that have technifermions in higher-dimensional representations and study embeddings in extended technicolor theories.

On the Unification of Gauge Symmetries in Theories with Dynamical Symmetry Breaking

We analyze approaches to the partial or complete unification of gauge symmetries in theories with dynamical symmetry breaking. Several types of models are considered, including those that (i) involve sufficient unification to quantize electric charge, (ii) attempt to unify the three standard-model gauge interactions in a simple Lie group that forms a direct product with an extended technicolor group, and, most ambitiously, (iii) attempt to unify the standard-model gauge interactions with (extended) technicolor in a simple Lie group.

Transfer Matrices for the Partition Function of the Potts Model on Toroidal Lattice Strips

We present a method for calculating transfer matrices for the $q$-state Potts model partition functions $Z(G,q,v)$, for arbitrary $q$ and temperature variable $v$, on strip graphs $G$ of the square (sq), triangular (tri), and honeycomb (hc) lattices of width $L_y$ vertices and of arbitrarily great length $L_x$ vertices, subject to toroidal and Klein bottle boundary conditions. For the toroidal case we express the partition function as $Z(Λ, L_y \times L_x,q,v) = \sum_{d=0}^{L_y} \sum_j b_j^{(d)} (λ_{Z,Λ,L_y,d,j})^m$, where $Λ$ denotes lattice type, $b_j^{(d)}$ are specified polynomials of degree $d$ in $q$, $λ_{Z,Λ,L_y,d,j}$ are eigenvalues of the transfer matrix $T_{Z,Λ,L_y,d}$ in the degree-$d$ subspace, and $m=L_x$ ($L_x/2$) for $Λ=sq, tri (hc)$, respectively. An analogous formula is given for Klein bottle strips. We exhibit a method for calculating $T_{Z,Λ,L_y,d}$ for arbitrary $L_y$. In particular, we find some very simple formulas for the determinant $det(T_{Z,Λ,L_y,d})$, and trace $Tr(T_{Z,Λ,L_y})$. Corresponding results are given for the equivalent Tutte polynomials for these lattice strips and illustrative examples are included.

Implications of Dynamical Generation of Standard-Model Fermion Masses

We point out that if quark and lepton masses arise dynamically, then in a wide class of theories the corresponding running masses $m_{f_j}(p)$ exhibit the power-law decay $m_{f_j}(p) \propto Λ_j^2/p^2$ for Euclidean momenta $p >> Λ_j$, where $f_j$ is a fermion of generation $j$, and $Λ_j$ is the maximal scale relevant for the origin of $m_{f_j}$. We estimate resultant changes in precision electroweak quantities and compare with current data. It is found that this data allows the presence of such corrections. We also note that this power-law decay renders primitively divergent fermion mass corrections finite.
