Estimation of L\'evy-driven CARMA models under renewal sampling

Continuous-time autoregressive and moving average (CARMA) models are extensively used to model high-frequency and irregularly sampled data. We study Whittle estimation for the model parameters when the process is observed at renewal times. The driving noise is assumed to be a L\'evy process allowing for more flexibility including heavy-tailed marginal distributions and jumps in the sample paths. We show that the Whittle estimator based on the integrated periodogram is consistent and asymptotically normal under very mild conditions. To obtain these results, we establish the asymptotic normality of the integrated periodogram.

Correction to: Multivariate CARMA processes, continuous-time state space models and complete regularity of the innovations of the sampled processes, Bernoulli 18, pp. 46-63, 2012

A serious flaw in the proof of the equivalence of continuous time state space models and MCARMA processes spotted in Fasen and Schenk (2024) is corrected. We point out that likewise an issue in the proof of Theorem 3.2 in Brockwell and Schlemm (2013) can be resolved and, hence, any MCARMA process and linear state space model has both a controller and an observer canonical representation. Equivalently, the transfer function has both a left and right matrix fraction representation.

Asymptotics of time-varying processes in continuous-time using locally stationary approximations

We introduce a general theory on stationary approximations for locally stationary continuous-time processes. Based on the stationary approximation, we use $\theta$-weak dependence to establish laws of large numbers and central limit type results under different observation schemes. Hereditary properties for a large class of finite and infinite memory transformations show the flexibility of the developed theory. Sufficient conditions for the existence of stationary approximations for time-varying L\'evy-driven state space models are derived and compared to existing results. We conclude with comprehensive results on the asymptotic behavior of the first and second order localized sample moments of time-varying L\'evy-driven state space models.

Continuous-time locally stationary time series models

We adapt the classical definition of locally stationary processes in discrete-time to the continuous-time setting and obtain equivalent representations in the time and frequency domain. From this, a unique time-varying spectral density is derived using the Wigner-Ville spectrum. As an example, we investigate time-varying L\'evy-driven state space processes, including the class of time-varying L\'evy-driven CARMA processes. First, the connection between these two classes of processes is examined. Considering a sequence of time-varying L\'evy-driven state space processes, we then give sufficient conditions on the coefficient functions that ensure local stationarity with respect to the given definition.

Moment based estimation for the multivariate COGARCH(1,1) process

For the multivariate COGARCH process, we obtain explicit expressions for the second-order structure of the "squared returns" process observed on an equidistant grid. Based on this, we present a generalized method of moments estimator for its parameters. Under appropriate moment and strong mixing conditions, we show that the resulting estimator is consistent and asymptotically normal. Sufficient conditions for strong mixing, stationarity and identifiability of the model parameters are discussed in detail. We investigate the finite sample behavior of the estimator in a simulation study.

Central limit theorems for stationary random fields under weak dependence with application to ambit and mixed moving average fields

We obtain central limit theorems for stationary random fields employing a novel measure of dependence called $\theta$-lex weak dependence. We show that this dependence notion is more general than strong mixing, i.e., it applies to a broader class of models. Moreover, we discuss hereditary properties for $\theta$-lex and $\eta$-weak dependence and illustrate the possible applications of the weak dependence notions to the study of the asymptotic properties of stationary random fields. Our general results apply to mixed moving average fields (MMAF in short) and ambit fields. We show general conditions such that MMAF and ambit fields, with the volatility field being an MMAF or a $p$-dependent random field, are weakly dependent. For all the models mentioned above, we give a complete characterization of their weak dependence coefficients and sufficient conditions to obtain the asymptotic normality of their sample moments. Finally, we give explicit computations of the weak dependence coefficients of MSTOU processes and analyze under which conditions the developed asymptotic theory applies to CARMA fields.

Inheritance of strong mixing and weak dependence under renewal sampling

Let $X$ be a continuous-time strongly mixing or weakly dependent process and $T$ a renewal process independent of $X$ with inter-arrival times $\tau$. We show general conditions under which the sampled process $(X_{T_i},T_i-T_{i-1})^{\top}$ is strongly mixing or weakly dependent. Moreover, we explicitly compute the strong mixing or weak dependence coefficients of the renewal sampled process and show that exponential or power decay of the coefficients of $X$ is preserved (at least asymptotically). Our results imply that essentially all central limit theorems available in the literature for strongly mixing or weakly dependent processes can be applied when renewal sampled observations of the process $X$ are at disposal.

Geometric Ergodicity of the multivariate COGARCH(1,1) Process

For the multivariate COGARCH(1,1) volatility process we show sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique stationary distribution, for the geometric ergodicity and for the finiteness of moments of the stationary distribution by a Foster-Lyapunov drift condition approach. The test functions used are naturally related to the geometry of the cone of positive semi-definite matrices and the drift condition is shown to be satisfied if the drift term of the defining stochastic differential equation is sufficiently `negative'. We show easily applicable sufficient conditions for the needed irreducibility and aperiodicity of the volatility process living in the cone of positive semidefinite matrices, if the driving Lévy process is a compound Poisson process.

Geometric Ergodicity of Affine Processes on Cones

For affine processes on finite-dimensional cones, we give criteria for geometric ergodicity - that is exponentially fast convergence to a unique stationary distribution. Ergodic results include both the existence of exponential moments of the limiting distribution, where we exploit the crucial affine property, and finite moments, where we invoke the polynomial property of affine semigroups. Furthermore, we elaborate sufficient conditions for aperiodicity and irreducibility. Our results are applicable to Wishart processes with jumps on the positive semidefinite matrices, continuous-time branching processes with immigration in high dimensions, and classical term-structure models for credit and interest rate risk.

Weak dependence and GMM estimation of supOU and mixed moving average processes

We consider a mixed moving average (MMA) process X driven by a L\'evy basis and prove that it is weakly dependent with rates computable in terms of the moving average kernel and the characteristic quadruple of the L\'evy basis. Using this property, we show conditions ensuring that sample mean and autocovariances of X have a limiting normal distribution. We extend these results to stochastic volatility models and then investigate a Generalized Method of Moments estimator for the supOU process and the supOU stochastic volatility model after choosing a suitable distribution for the mean reversion parameter. For these estimators, we analyze the asymptotic behavior in detail.

Limit behaviour of the truncated pathwise Fourier-transformation of Lévy-driven CARMA processes for non-equidistant discrete time observations

This paper considers a continuous time analogue of the classical autoregressive moving average processes, Lévy-driven CARMA processes. First we describe limiting properties of the periodogram by means of the so-called truncated Fourier transform if observations are available continuously. The obtained results are in accordance with their counterparts from the discrete-time case. Then we discuss the numerical approximation of the truncated Fourier transform based on non-equidistant high frequency data. In order to ensure convergence of the numerical approximation to the true value of the truncated Fourier transform a certain control on the maximal distance between observations and the number of observations is needed. We obtain both convergence to the continuous time quantity and asymptotic normality under a high-frequency infinite time horizon limit.

A BSDE arising in an exponential utility maximization problem in a pure jump market model

We consider the problem of utility maximization with exponential preferences in a market where the traded stock/risky asset price is modelled as a Lévy-driven pure jump process (i.e. the driving Lévy process has no Brownian component). In this setting, we study the terminal utility optimization problem in the presence of a European contingent claim. We consider in detail the BSDE (backward stochastic differential equation) characterising the value function when using an exponential utility function. First we analyse the well-definedness of the generator. This leads to some conditions on the market model related to conditions for the market to admit no free lunches. Then we give bounds on the candidate optimal strategy. Thereafter, we discuss the example of a cross-hedging problem and, under severe assumptions on the structure of the claim, we give explicit solutions. Finally, we establish an explicit solution for a related BSDE with a suitable terminal condition but a simpler generator.

Moment based estimation of supOU processes and a related stochastic volatility model

After a quick review of superpositions of OU (supOU) processes, integrated sup\-OU processes and the supOU stochastic volatility model we estimate these processes by using the generalized method of moments (GMM). We show that the GMM approach yields consistent estimators and that it works very well in practice. Moreover, we discuss the influence of long memory effects.

Optimal investment with time-varying stochastic endowments

This paper considers a utility maximization and optimal asset allocation problem in the presence of a stochastic endowment that cannot be fully hedged through trading in the financial market. After studying continuity properties of the value function for general utility functions, we rely on the dynamic programming approach to solve the optimization problem for power utility investors including the empirically relevant and mathematically challenging case of relative risk aversion larger than one. For this, we argue that the value function is the unique viscosity solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. The homogeneity of the value function is then used to reduce the HJB equation by one dimension, which allows us to prove that the value function is even a classical solution thereof. Using this, an optimal strategy is derived and its asymptotic behavior in the large wealth regime is discussed.

Derivative pricing under the possibility of long memory in the supOU stochastic volatility model

We consider the supOU stochastic volatility model which is able to exhibit long-range dependence. For this model we give conditions for the discounted stock price to be a martingale, calculate the characteristic function, give a strip where it is analytic and discuss the use of Fourier pricing techniques. Finally, we present a concrete specification with polynomially decaying autocorrelations and calibrate it to observed market prices of plain vanilla options.

Limit Theory for the largest eigenvalues of sample covariance matrices with heavy-tails

We study the joint limit distribution of the $k$ largest eigenvalues of a $p\times p$ sample covariance matrix $XX^\T$ based on a large $p\times n$ matrix $X$. The rows of $X$ are given by independent copies of a linear process, $X_{it}=\sum_j c_j Z_{i,t-j}$, with regularly varying noise $(Z_{it})$ with tail index $α\in(0,4)$. It is shown that a point process based on the eigenvalues of $XX^\T$ converges, as $n\to\infty$ and $p\to\infty$ at a suitable rate, in distribution to a Poisson point process with an intensity measure depending on $α$ and $\sum c_j^2$. This result is extended to random coefficient models where the coefficients of the linear processes $(X_{it})$ are given by $c_j(θ_i)$, for some ergodic sequence $(θ_i)$, and thus vary in each row of $X$. As a by-product of our techniques we obtain a proof of the corresponding result for matrices with iid entries in cases where $p/n$ goes to zero or infinity and $α\in(0,2)$.

Quasi maximum likelihood estimation for strongly mixing state space models and multivariate Lévy-driven CARMA processes

We consider quasi maximum likelihood (QML) estimation for general non-Gaussian discrete-ime linear state space models and equidistantly observed multivariate Lévy-driven continuoustime autoregressive moving average (MCARMA) processes. In the discrete-time setting, we prove strong consistency and asymptotic normality of the QML estimator under standard moment assumptions and a strong-mixing condition on the output process of the state space model. In the second part of the paper, we investigate probabilistic and analytical properties of equidistantly sampled continuous-time state space models and apply our results from the discrete-time setting to derive the asymptotic properties of the QML estimator of discretely recorded MCARMA processes. Under natural identifiability conditions, the estimators are again consistent and asymptotically normally distributed for any sampling frequency. We also demonstrate the practical applicability of our method through a simulation study and a data example from econometrics.

FunctionaL Regular Variation of Lévy-driven Multivariate Mixed Moving Average Processes

We consider the functional regular variation in the space $\mathbb{D}$ of càdlàg functions of multivariate mixed moving average (MMA) processes of the type $X_t = \int\int f(A, t - s) Λ(d A, d s)$. We give sufficient conditions for an MMA process $(X_t)$ to have càdlàg sample paths. As our main result, we prove that $(X_t)$ is regularly varying in $\mathbb{D}$ if the driving Lévy basis is regularly varying and the kernel function $f$ satisfies certain natural (continuity) conditions. Finally, the special case of supOU processes, which are used, e.g., in applications in finance, is considered in detail.
