Computation of Laplacian eigenvalues of two-dimensional shapes with dihedral symmetry

We numerically compute the lowest Laplacian eigenvalues of several two-dimensional shapes with dihedral symmetry at arbitrary precision arithmetic. Our approach is based on the method of particular solutions with domain decomposition. We are particularly interested in asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalues $λ(n)$ of shapes with $n$ edges that are of the form $λ(n) \sim x\sum_{k=0}^{\infty} \frac{C_k(x)}{n^k}$ where $x$ is the limiting eigenvalue for $n\rightarrow \infty$. Expansions of this form have previously only been known for regular polygons with Dirichlet boundary condition and (quite surprisingly) involve Riemann zeta values and single-valued multiple zeta values, which makes them interesting to study. We provide numerical evidence for closed-form expressions of higher order $C_k(x)$ and give more examples of shapes for which such expansions are possible (including regular polygons with Neumann boundary condition, regular star polygons and star shapes with sinusoidal boundary).

The fundamental Laplacian eigenvalue of the ellipse with Dirichlet boundary conditions

In this project, I examine the lowest Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Laplacian within the ellipse as a function of eccentricity. Two existing analytic expansions of the eigenvalue are extended: Close to the circle (eccentricity near zero) nine terms are added to the Maclaurin series; and near the infinite strip (eccentricity near unity) four terms are added to the asymptotic expansion. In the past, other methods, such as boundary variation techniques, have been used to work on this problem, but I use a different approach -- which not only offers independent confirmation of existing results, but extends them. My starting point is a high precision computation of the eigenvalue for selected values of eccentricity. These data are then fit to polynomials in appropriate parameters yielding high-precision coefficients that are fed into an LLL integer-relation algorithm with forms guided by prior results.

The fundamental Laplacian eigenvalue of the regular polygon with Dirichlet boundary conditions

The lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian within the S-sided regular polygon with Dirichlet boundary conditions is the focus of this report. As suggested by others, this eigenvalue may be expressed as an asymptotic expansion in powers of 1/S where, interestingly, they have shown that the first few coefficients in that expansion, up to sixth order, may be expressed analytically in terms of Riemann zeta functions and roots of Bessel functions. This report builds on that work with three main contributions: (1) compelling numerical evidence independently supporting those published results, (2) a conjecture adding two more terms to the asymptotic expansion, and (3) an observation that higher-order coefficients both alternate in sign and grow rapidly in magnitude, which suggest the series doesn't converge unless S>=10. This report is based on a numerical computation of the eigenvalues precise to fifty digits for S up to 150. Keywords: Laplacian eigenvalue; regular polygon; asymptotic expansion
