A Characterization of Model Multi-colour Sets

Model sets are always Meyer sets, but not vice-versa. This article is about characterizing model sets (general and regular) amongst the Meyer sets in terms of two associated dynamical systems. These two dynamical systems describe two very different topologies on point sets, one local and one global. In model sets these two are strongly interconnected and this connection is essentially definitive. The paper is set in the context of multi-colour sets, that is to say, point sets in which points come in a finite number of colours, that are loosely coupled together by finite local complexity.

Weighted Dirac combs with pure point diffraction

A class of translation bounded complex measures, which have the form of weighted Dirac combs, on locally compact Abelian groups is investigated. Given such a Dirac comb, we are interested in its diffraction spectrum which emerges as the Fourier transform of the autocorrelation measure. We present a sufficient set of conditions to ensure that the diffraction measure is a pure point measure. Simultaneously, we establish a natural link to the theory of the cut and project formalism and to the theory of almost periodic measures. Our conditions are general enough to cover the known theory of model sets, but also to include examples such as the visible lattice points.

What is Aperiodic Order?

The theory of aperiodic order is concerned with the development of ideas stimulated by the discovery of quasicrystals. We give a gentle introduction to some mathematical aspects of aperiodic order, aimed at a more general audience.

Self-Similar Measures for Quasicrystals

We study self-similar measures of Hutchinson type, defined by compact families of contractions, both in a single and multi-component setting. The results are applied in the context of general model sets to infer, via a generalized version of Weyl's Theorem on uniform distribution, the existence of invariant measures for families of self-similarities of regular model sets.

Lattice Substitution Systems and Model Sets

The paper studies ways in which the sets of a partition of a lattice in $\RR^n$ become regular model sets. The main theorem gives equivalent conditions which assure that a matrix substitution system on a lattice in $\RR^n$ gives rise to regular model sets (based on $p$-adic-like internal spaces), and hence to pure point diffractive sets. The methods developed here are used to show that the $n-$dimensional chair tiling and the sphinx tiling are pure point diffractive.

Model sets: a survey

This article surveys the mathematics of the cut and project method as applied to point sets, called here {\em model sets}. It covers the geometric, arithmetic, and analytical sides of this theory as well as diffraction and the connection with dynamical systems.

Diffraction from visible lattice points and k-th power free integers

We prove that the set of visible points of any lattice of dimension at least 2 has pure point diffraction spectrum, and we determine the diffraction spectrum explicitly. This settles previous speculation on the exact nature of the diffraction in this situation, see math-ph/9903046 and references therein. Using similar methods we show the same result for the 1-dimensional set of k-th power free integers with k at least 2. Of special interest is the fact that neither of these sets is a Delone set --- each has holes of unbounded inradius. We provide a careful formulation of the mathematical ideas underlying the study of diffraction from infinite point sets.

Similarity submodules and root systems in four dimensions

Lattices and Z-modules in Euclidean space possess an infinitude of subsets that are images of the original set under similarity transformation. We classify such self-similar images according to their indices for certain 4D examples that are related to 4D root systems, both crystallographic and non-crystallographic. We encapsulate their statistics in terms of Dirichlet series generating functions and derive some of their asymptotic properties.

Limit-(quasi)periodic point sets as quasicrystals with p-adic internal spaces

Model sets (or cut and project sets) provide a familiar and commonly used method of constructing and studying nonperiodic point sets. Here we extend this method to situations where the internal spaces are no longer Euclidean, but instead spaces with p-adic topologies or even with mixed Euclidean/p-adic topologies. We show that a number of well known tilings precisely fit this form, including the chair tiling and the Robinson square tilings. Thus the scope of the cut and project formalism is considerably larger than is usually supposed. Applying the powerful consequences of model sets we derive the diffractive nature of these tilings.

Invariant Submodules and Semigroups of Self-Similarities for Fibonacci Modules

The problem of invariance and self-similarity in Z-modules is investigated. For a selection of examples relevant to quasicrystals, especially Fibonacci modules, we determine the semigroup of self-similarities and encapsulate the number of similarity submodules in terms of Dirichlet series generating functions.

Multi-Component Model Sets and Invariant Densities

Model sets (also called cut and project sets) are generalizations of lattices, and multi-component model sets are generalizations of lattices with colourings. In this paper, we study self-similarities of multi-component model sets. The main point may be simply summarized: whenever there is a self-similarity, there are also naturally related density functions. As in the case of ordinary model sets, we show that invariant densities exist and that they produce absolutely continuous invariant measures in internal space, these features now appearing in matrix form. We establish a close connection between the theory of invariant densities and the spectral theory of matrix continuous refinement operators.

Self-Similarities and Invariant Densities for Model Sets

Model sets (also called cut and project sets) are generalizations of lattices. Here we show how the self-similarities of model sets are a natural replacement for the group of translations of a lattice. This leads us to the concept of averaging operators and invariant densities on model sets. We prove that invariant densities exist and that they produce absolutely continuous invariant measures in internal space. We study the invariant densities and their relationships to diffraction, continuous refinement operators, and Hutchinson measures.
