Active Learning of Piecewise Gaussian Process Surrogates

Active learning of Gaussian process (GP) surrogates has been useful for optimizing experimental designs for physical/computer simulation experiments, and for steering data acquisition schemes in machine learning. In this paper, we develop a method for active learning of piecewise, Jump GP surrogates. Jump GPs are continuous within, but discontinuous across, regions of a design space, as required for applications spanning autonomous materials design, configuration of smart factory systems, and many others. Although our active learning heuristics are appropriated from strategies originally designed for ordinary GPs, we demonstrate that additionally accounting for model bias, as opposed to the usual model uncertainty, is essential in the Jump GP context. Toward that end, we develop an estimator for bias and variance of Jump GP models. Illustrations, and evidence of the advantage of our proposed methods, are provided on a suite of synthetic benchmarks, and real-simulation experiments of varying complexity.

Rigidity of differential operators and Chern numbers of singular varieties

A differential operator $D$ commuting with an $S^1$-action is said to be rigid if the non-constant Fourier coefficients of $\ker D$ and $\coker D$ are the same. Somewhat surprisingly, the study of rigid differential operators turns out to be closely related to the problem of defining Chern numbers on singular varieties. This relationship comes into play when we make use of the rigidity properties of the complex elliptic genus--essentially an infinite-dimensional analogue of a Dirac operator. This paper is a survey of rigidity theorems related to the elliptic genus, and their applications to the construction "singular" Chern numbers.

Singular McKay correspondence for normal surfaces

We define the singular orbifold elliptic genus and $E$-function for all normal surfaces without strictly log-canonical singularities, and prove the analogue of the McKay correspondence in this setting. Our invariants generalize the stringy invariants defined by Willem Veys for this class of singularities. We show that the ability to define these invariants is closely linked to rigidity phenomena associated to the elliptic genus.

Singular elliptic genus of normal surfaces

We define the singular elliptic genus for arbitrary normal surfaces, prove that it is a birational invariant, and show that it generalizes the singular elliptic genus of Borisov and Libgober and the stringy $χ_y$ genus of Batyrev and Veys.

Equivariant Elliptic Genera

We introduce equivariant elliptic genera for open varieties with a torus action and prove the equivariant elliptic genus version of the McKay correspondence for ALE spaces.
