Six-dimensional superconformal couplings of non-abelian tensor and hypermultiplets

We construct six-dimensional superconformal models with non-abelian tensor and hypermultiplets. They describe the field content of (2,0) theories, coupled to (1,0) vector multiplets. The latter are part of the non-abelian gauge structure that also includes non-dynamical three- and four-forms. The hypermultiplets are described by gauged nonlinear sigma models with a hyper-Kaehler cone target space. We also address the question of constraints in these models and show that their resolution requires the inclusion of abelian factors. These provide couplings that were previously considered for anomaly cancellations with abelian tensor multiplets and resulted in the selection of ADE gauge groups.

An index for confined monopoles

We compute the index and associated spectral density for fluctuation operators which are defined via the Lagrangian of N=2 SQCD in the background of non-abelian confined multimonopoles. To this end we generalize the standard index calculations of Callias and Weinberg to the case of asymptotically nontrivial backgrounds. The resulting index is determined by topological charges. We conjecture that this index counts one quarter of the dimension of the moduli space of confined multimonopoles.

Quantum Energies and Tensorial Central Charges of Confined Monopoles

We study different aspects of monopoles in the Higgs phase which are confined by (non-abelian) vortices in \cal{N}=2 SQCD with gauge group U(N) and N_f >= N massive flavors, including generalized FI-terms. We compute in particular the perturbative quantum corrections for (multiple) confined monopoles and identify an anomalous contribution in the central charge. For N_f = N the results match the quantum corrections for kinks in two-dimensional CP^{N-1} models. To regulate the theory we embedded it in a six-dimensional model with constant U(1) background fields which generate the masses upon dimensional reduction. We discuss the (local) susy algebra and its representations including tensorial central charges, which are carried by the confined monopoles, in an SU(2)_R covariant way. The resulting SU(2)_R covariant 1/4 BPS equations show that there is no correlation between the SU(2)_R and the spatial orientation of the confined monopole system. However, at the quantum level we find that supersymmetry links the spatial SU(2) with the R-symmetry SU(2)_R.

A Twistor Description of Six-Dimensional N=(1,1) Super Yang-Mills Theory

We present a twistor space that describes super null-lines on six-dimensional N=(1,1) superspace. We then show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between holomorphic vector bundles over this twistor space and solutions to the field equations of N=(1,1) super Yang-Mills theory. Our constructions naturally reduce to those of the twistorial description of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions.

(1,0) superconformal models in six dimensions

We construct six-dimensional (1,0) superconformal models with non-abelian gauge couplings for multiple tensor multiplets. A crucial ingredient in the construction is the introduction of three-form gauge potentials which communicate degrees of freedom between the tensor multiplets and the Yang-Mills multiplet, but do not introduce additional degrees of freedom. Generically these models provide only equations of motions. For a subclass also a Lagrangian formulation exists, however it appears to exhibit indefinite metrics in the kinetic sector. We discuss several examples and analyze the excitation spectra in their supersymmetric vacua. In general, the models are perturbatively defined only in the spontaneously broken phase with the vev of the tensor multiplet scalars serving as the inverse coupling constants of the Yang-Mills multiplet. We briefly discuss the inclusion of hypermultiplets which complete the field content to that of superconformal (2,0) theories.

N=6 Superspace Constraints, SUSY Enhancement and Monopole Operators

We present a systematic analysis of the N=6 superspace constraints in three space-time dimensions. The general coupling between vector and scalar supermultiplets is encoded in an SU(4) tensor $W^i_j$ which is a function of the matter fields and subject to a set of algebraic and super-differential relations. We give a genuine N=6 classification for superconformal models with polynomial interactions and find the known ABJM and ABJ models. We further study the issue of supersymmetry enhancement to N=8 and the role of monopole operators in this scenario. To this end we assume the existence of a composite monopole operator superfield which we use to formulate the additional supersymmetries as internal symmetries of the N=6 superspace constraints. From the invariance conditions of these constraints we derive a system of superspace constraints for the proposed monopole operator superfield. This constraint system defines the composite monopole operator superfield analogously to the original N=6 superspace constraints defining the dynamics of the elementary fields.

N=8 Superspace Constraints for Three-dimensional Gauge Theories

We present a systematic analysis of the N=8 superspace constraints in three space-time dimensions. The general coupling between vector and scalar supermultiplets is encoded in an SO(8) tensor W_{AB} which is a function of the matter fields and subject to a set of algebraic and super-differential relations. We show how the conformal BLG model as well as three-dimensional super Yang-Mills theory provide solutions to these constraints and can both be formulated in this universal framework.

Perturbative Quantum Corrections to the Supersymmetric CP^1 Kink with Twisted Mass

We present an explicit calculation of the one-loop quantum corrections to the mass and the two central charges of the kink solution of an N=(2,2) supersymmetric CP^1 model with twisted mass, using supersymmetry preserving dimensional regularization adapted to solitons. We find that the quantum corrections of the mass and one of the central charges are nontrivial (but saturate the BPS bound), while the other central charge receives no corrections. The nontrivial central charge correction corresponds to a quantum anomaly, which in our scheme appears as parity violation in the regulating extra dimension, and its magnitude is in agreement with exact results obtained by Dorey on the basis of a massive analog of mirror symmetry from a dual U(1) gauge theory, confirming also the recent work by Shifman, Vainshtein, and Zwicky.

Quantum Mass and Central Charge of Supersymmetric Monopoles - Anomalies, current renormalization, and surface terms

We calculate the one-loop quantum corrections to the mass and central charge of N=2 and N=4 supersymmetric monopoles in 3+1 dimensions. The corrections to the N=2 central charge are finite and due to an anomaly in the conformal central charge current, but they cancel for the N=4 monopole. For the quantum corrections to the mass we start with the integral over the expectation value of the Hamiltonian density, which we show to consist of a bulk contribution which is given by the familiar sum over zero-point energies, as well as surface terms which contribute nontrivially in the monopole sector. The bulk contribution is evaluated through index theorems and found to be nonvanishing only in the N=2 case. The contributions from the surface terms in the Hamiltonian are cancelled by infinite composite operator counterterms in the N=4 case, forming a multiplet of improvement terms. These counterterms are also needed for the renormalization of the central charge. However, in the N=2 case they cancel, and both the improved and the unimproved current multiplet are finite.

D0-D4 brane tachyon condensation to a BPS state and its excitation spectrum in noncommutative super Yang-Mills theory

We investigate the D0-D4-brane system for different B-field backgrounds including the small instanton singularity in noncommutative SYM theory. We discuss the excitation spectrum of the unstable state as well as for the BPS D0-D4 bound state. We compute the tachyon potential which reproduces the complete mass defect. The relevant degrees of freedom are the massless (4,4) strings. Both results are in contrast with existing string field theory calculations. The excitation spectrum of the small instanton is found to be equal to the excitation spectrum of the fluxon solution on R^2_theta x R which we trace back to T-duality. For the effective theory of the (0,0) string excitations we obtain a BFSS matrix model. The number of states in the instanton background changes significantly when the B-field becomes self-dual. This leads us to the proposal of the existence of a phase transition or cross over at self-dual B-field.

New developments in the quantization of supersymmetric solitons (kinks, vortices and monopoles)

We discuss the one-loop quantum corrections to the mass M and central charge Z of supersymmetric solitons: the kink, the vortex and the monopole. Contrary to previous expectations and published results, in each of these cases there are nonvanishing quantum corrections to the mass. For the N=1 kink and the N=2 monopole a new anomaly in Z rescues BPS saturation (M=Z); for the N=2 vortex, BPS saturation is rescued for two reasons: (i) the quantum fluctuations of the Higgs field acquire a nontrivial phase due to the winding of the classical solution, and (ii) a fermionic zero mode used in the literature is shown not to be normalizable.

Quantum corrections to mass and central charge of supersymmetric solitons

We review some recent developments in the subject of quantum corrections to soliton mass and central charge. We consider in particular approaches which use local densities for these corrections, as first discussed by Hidenaga Yamagishi. We then consider dimensional regularization of the supersymmetric kink in 1+1 dimensions and an extension of this method to a 2+1-dimensional gauge theory with supersymmetric abelian Higgs vortices as the solitons.

Clash of discrete symmetries for the supersymmetric kink on a circle

We consider the N=1 supersymmetric kink on a circle, i.e., on a finite interval with boundary or transition conditions which are locally invisible. For Majorana fermions, the single-particle Dirac Hamiltonian as a differential operator obeys simultaneously the three discrete symmetries of charge conjugation, parity, and time reversal. However, no single locally invisible transition condition can satisfy all three. When calculating sums over zero-point energies by mode number regularization, this gives a new rationale for a previous suggestion that one has to average over different choices of boundary conditions, such that for the combined set all three symmetries are obeyed. In particular it is shown that for twisted periodic or twisted antiperiodic boundary conditions separately both parity and time reversal are violated in the kink sector, as manifested by a delocalized momentum that cancels only in the average.

Quantization of supersymmetric solitons

We investigate the issue of regularization/renormalization in the presence of a nontrivial background in the case of 1+1-(supersymmetric) solitons. In particular we study and compare the commonly employed regularization methods (mode- energy/momentum- cutoff and derivative regularization). We show that the main point for a consistent regularization/renormalization is to find a relation between the ``cutoffs'' in the vacuum and the nontrivial sector so that they can be related in a consistent manner. For each scheme we give a principle to derive this relation and to perform calculations in a consistent way. These principles are simple and not restricted to two dimensions or supersymmetric theories.
