Tank-Circuit Assisted Coupling Method for Sympathetic Laser Cooling

We discuss the coupling of the motion of two ion species in separate Penning traps via a common tank circuit. The enhancement of the coupling assisted by the tank circuit is demonstrated by an avoided crossing behavior measurement of the motional modes of two coupled ions. We propose an intermittent laser cooling method for sympathetic cooling and provide a theoretical description. The technique enables tuning of the coupling strength between two ion species in separate traps and thus allows for efficient sympathetic cooling of an arbitrary type of single ion for high-precision Penning-trap experiments.

Serpent neutronics model of Wendelstein 7-X for 14.1 MeV neutrons

In this work, a Serpent 2 neutronics model of the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator is prepared, and an response function for the Scintillating-Fibre neutron detector (SciFi) is calculated using the model. The neutronics model includes the simplified geometry for the key components of the stellarator itself as well as the torus hall. The objective of the model is to assess the 14.1 MeV neutron flux from deuteron-triton fusions in W7-X, where the neutrons are modelled only until they have slowed down to 1 MeV energy. The key messages of this article are: demonstration of unstructured mesh geometry usage for stellarators, W7-X in particular; technical documentation of the model and first insights in fast neutron behaviour in W7-X, especially related to the SciFi: the model indicates that the superconducting coils are the strongest scatterers and block neutrons from large parts of the plasma. The back-scattering from e.g. massive steel support structures is found to be small. The SciFi will detect neutrons from an extended plasma volume in contrast to having an effective line-of-sight.

$Q_{\textrm{EC}}$-value determination for $^{21}$Na$\rightarrow^{21}$Ne and $^{23}$Mg$\rightarrow^{23}$Na mirror-nuclei decays using high-precision mass spectrometry with ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN

We report on high-precision $Q_{\textrm{EC}}$ values of the $^{21}$Na$\rightarrow^{21}$Ne and $^{23}$Mg$\rightarrow^{23}$Na mirror $β$-transitions from mass measurements with ISOLTRAP at ISOLDE/CERN. A precision of $δm/m = 9 \cdot 10^{-10}$ and $δm/m = 1.5 \cdot 10^{-9}$ was reached for the masses of $^{21}$Na and $^{23}$Mg, respectively. We reduce the uncertainty of the $Q_{\textrm{EC}}$ values by a factor five, making them the most precise experimental input data for the calculation of the corrected $\mathcal{F} t$-value of these mixed Fermi/Gamow-Teller transitions. For the $^{21}$Na$\rightarrow^{21}$Ne $Q_{\textrm{EC}}$ value, a $2.3 σ$ deviation from the literature $Q_{\textrm{EC}}$-value was found.

Compactness of iso-resonant potentials for Schrödinger operators in dimensions one and three

We prove compactness of a restricted set of real-valued, compactly supported potentials $V$ for which the corresponding Schrödinger operators $H_V$ have the same resonances, including multiplicities. More specifically, let $B_R(0)$ be the ball of radius $R > 0$ about the origin in $R^d$, for $d=1,3$. Let $\mathcal{I}_R (V_0)$ be the set of real-valued potentials in $C_0^\infty( \overline{B}_R(0); R)$ so that the corresponding Schrödinger operators have the same resonances, including multiplicities, as $H_{V_0}$. We prove that the set $\mathcal{I}_R (V_0)$ is a compact subset of $C_0^\infty (\overline{B}_R(0))$ in the $C^\infty$-topology. An extension to Sobolev spaces of less regular potentials is discussed.

Hahn Field Representation of A. Robinson's Asymptotic Numbers

Let $^*\mathbb{R}$ be a nonstandard extension of $\mathbb{R}$ and $ρ$ be a positive infinitesimal in $^*\mathbb{R}$. We show how to create a variety of isomorphisms between A. Robinson's field of asymptotic numbers $^ρ\mathbb{R}$ and the Hahn field $\hat{^ρ\mathbb{R}}(t^\mathbb{R})$, where $\hat{^ρ\mathbb{R}}$ is the residue class field of $^ρ\mathbb{R}$. Then, assuming that $^*\mathbb{R}$ is fully saturated we show that $\hat{^ρ\mathbb{R}}$ is isomorphic to $^*\mathbb{R}$ and so $^ρ\mathbb{R}$ contains a copy of $^*\mathbb{R}$. As a consequence (that is important for applications in non-linear theory of generalized functions) we show that every two fields of asymptotic numbers corresponding to different scales are isomorphic.
