Wrinkling in the Lam\'e problem: a $\Gamma$-convergence approach

We study wrinkling patterns in a thin elastic annulus subjected to radial stretching within the framework of the F\"oppl--von K\'arm\'an theory. Building on the analysis of the Lam\'e problem in Bella and Kohn, we investigate the asymptotic regime $h\to0$ and establish a $\Gamma$-convergence result for suitably rescaled energies after subtraction of the relaxed membrane energy. The limiting functional is a scalar convex measure-valued energy coupled with a constraint on the marginal of the limiting measure, describing the distribution of wrinkle frequencies. We also prove existence and qualitative properties of minimizers of the limiting functional.

$\Gamma$-convergence of free discontinuity problems for circle-valued maps in the linear regime

We investigate the $\Gamma$-convergence of Ambrosio-Tortorelli type-functionals for circle valued functions, in the case of volume terms with linear growth. We show the emergence of a non-local $\Gamma$-limit, which is due to the topological structure of the target space, and discuss compactness of minimal liftings. Our results extend the analysis of a previous work on the quadratic case.

Brinkman's law as $\Gamma$-limit of compressible low Mach Navier-Stokes equations and application to randomly perforated domains

We consider the time-dependent compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the low Mach number regime inside a family of domains $(\Omega_\varepsilon)_{\varepsilon > 0}$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Assuming that $\lim_{\varepsilon \to 0} \Omega_\varepsilon = \Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^3$ in a suitable sense, we show that in the limit the fluid flow inside $\Omega$ is governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Brinkman equations, provided the latter one admits a strong solution. The abstract convergence result is complemented with a stochastic homogenization result for randomly perforated domains in the critical regime.

On jump minimizing liftings for $\mathbb S^1$-valued maps and connections with Ambrosio-Tortorelli-type $\Gamma$-limits

This paper is concerned with the $\Gamma$-limits of Ambrosio-Tortorelli-type functionals, for maps $u$ defined on an open bounded set $\Omega\subset\mathbb R^n$ and taking values in the unit circle $\mathbb S^1\subset\mathbb R^2$. Depending on the domain of the functional, two different $\Gamma$-limits are possible, one of which is nonlocal, and related to the notion of jump minimizing lifting, i.e., a lifting of a map $u$ whose measure of the jump set is minimal. The latter requires ad hoc compactness results for sequences of liftings which, besides being interesting by themselves, also allow to deduce existence of a jump minimizing lifting.

Interacting phase fields yielding phase separation on surfaces

In the present article we study diffuse interface models for two-phase biomembranes. We will do so by starting off with a diffuse interface model on $\mathbb{R}^n$ defined by two coupled phase fields $u,v$. The first phase field $u$ is the diffuse approximation of the interior of the membrane; the second phase field $v$ is the diffuse approximation of the two phases of the membrane. We prove a compactness result and a lower bound in the sense of $Γ$-convergence for pairs of phase functions $(u_\varepsilon,v_\varepsilon)$. As an application of this first result, we consider a diffuse approximation of a two-phase Willmore functional plus line tension energy.

$Γ$-Convergence for plane to wrinkles transition problem

We consider a variational problem modeling transition between flat and wrinkled region in a thin elastic sheet, and identify the $Γ$-limit as the sheet thickness goes to 0, thus extending the previous work of the first author [Bella, ARMA 2015]. The limiting problem is scalar and convex, but constrained and posed for measures. For the $Γ$-liminf inequality we first pass to quadratic variables so that the constraint becomes linear, and then obtain the lower bound using Reshetnyak's theorem. The construction of the recovery sequence for the $Γ$- limsup inequality relies on mollification of quadratic variables, and careful choice of multiple construction parameters. Eventually for the limiting problem we show existence of a minimizer and equipartition of the energy for each frequency.

Non-local approximation of free-discontinuity problems in linear elasticity and application to stochastic homogenisation

We analyse the $\Gamma$-convergence of general non-local convolution type functionals with varying densities depending on the space variable and on the symmetrized gradient. The limit is a local free-discontinuity functional, where the bulk term can be completely characterized in terms of an asymptotic cell formula. From that, we can deduce an homogenisation result in the stochastic setting.

Line-tension limits for line singularities and application to the mixed-growth case

We study variational models for dislocations in three dimensions in the line-tension scaling. We present a unified approach which allows to treat energies with subquadratic growth at infinity and other regularizations of the singularity near the dislocation lines. We show that the asymptotics via Gamma convergence is independent of the specific choice of the energy and of the regularization procedure.

$Γ$-convergence and stochastic homogenisation of phase-transition functionals

In this paper we studythe asymptotics of singularly perturbed phase-transition functionals of the form \[ F_k(u)=\frac{1}{ε_k}\int_A f_k(x,u,ε_k\nabla u)\,dx\,, \] where $u \in [0,1]$ is a phase-field variable, $ε_k>0$ a singular-perturbation parameter, i.e., $ε_k \to 0$, as $k\to +\infty$, and the integrands $f_k$ are such that, for every $x$ and every $k$, $f_k(x,\cdot ,0)$ is a double well potential with zeros at 0 and 1. We prove that the functionals $F_k$ $Γ$-converge (up to subsequences) to a surface functional of the form \[ F_\infty(u)=\int_{S_u\cap A}f_\infty(x,ν_u)\,d\mathcal H^{n-1}\,,\] where $u\in BV(A;\{0,1\})$ and $f_\infty$ is characterised by the double limit of suitably scaled minimisation problems. Afterwards we extend our analysis to the setting of stochastic homogenisation and prove a $Γ$-convergence result for stationary random integrands.

Gradient damage models for heterogeneous materials

In this paper we study the asymptotic behaviour of phase-field functionals of Am brosio and Tortorelli type allowing for small-scale oscillations both in the volume and in the diffuse surface term. The functionals under examination can be interpreted as an instance of a static gradient damage model for heterogeneous materials. Depending on the mutual vanishing rate of the approximation and of the oscillation parameters, the effective behaviour of the model is fully characterised by means of Gamma-convergence.

A non-parametric Plateau problem with partial free boundary

We consider a Plateau problem in codimension $1$ in the non-parametric setting. A Dirichlet boundary datum is given only on part of the boundary $\partial Ω$ of a bounded convex domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$. Where the Dirichlet datum is not prescribed, we allow a free contact with the horizontal plane. We show existence of a solution, and prove regularity for the corresponding minimal surface. Finally we compare these solutions with the classical minimal surfaces of Meeks and Yau, and show that they are equivalent when the Dirichlet boundary datum is assigned in at most $2$ disjoint arcs of $\partial Ω$.

$Γ$-convergence and stochastic homogenisation of singularly-perturbed elliptic functionals

We study the limit behaviour of singularly-perturbed elliptic functionals of the form \[ \mathcal F_k(u,v)=\int_A v^2\,f_k(x,\nabla u)dx+\frac{1}{\varepsilon_k}\int_A g_k(x,v,\varepsilon_k\nabla v)dx\,, \] where $u$ is a vector-valued Sobolev function, $v \in [0,1]$ a phase-field variable, and $\varepsilon_k>0$ a singular-perturbation parameter, i.e., $\varepsilon_k \to 0$, as $k\to +\infty$. Under mild assumptions on the integrands $f_k$ and $g_k$, we show that if $f_k$ grows superlinearly in the gradient-variable, then the functionals $\mathcal F_k$ $Γ$-converge (up to subsequences) to a brittle energy-functional, i.e., to a free-discontinuity functional whose surface integrand does not depend on the jump-amplitude of $u$. This result is achieved by providing explicit asymptotic formulas for the bulk and surface integrands which show, in particular, that volume and surface term in $\mathcal F_k$ decouple in the limit. The abstract $Γ$-convergence analysis is complemented by a stochastic homogenisation result for stationary random integrands.

Nonlinear three-dimensional derivation of line tension for dislocations: quadratic growth

In this paper we derive a line tension model for dislocations in 3d starting from a geometrically nonlinear elastic energy with quadratic growth. In the asymptotic analysis, as the amplitude of the Burgers vectors (proportional to the lattice spacing) tends to zero, we show that the elastic energy linearises and the line tension energy density, up to an overall constant rotation, is identified by the linearised cell problem formula given in [17].
