Convolutional neural network for detection and classification of seizures in clinical data

Epileptic seizure detection and classification in clinical electroencephalogram data still is a challenge, and only low sensitivity with a high rate of false positives has been achieved with commercially available seizure detection tools, which usually are patient non-specific. Epilepsy patients suffer from severe detrimental effects like physical injury or depression due to unpredictable seizures. However, even in hospitals due to the high rate of false positives, the seizure alert systems are of poor help for patients as tools of seizure detection are mostly trained on unrealistically clean data, containing little noise and obtained under controlled laboratory conditions, where patient groups are homogeneous, e.g. in terms of age or type of seizures. In this study authors present the approach for detection and classification of a seizure using clinical data of electroencephalograms and a convolutional neural network trained on features of brain synchronisation and power spectrum. Various deep learning methods were applied, and the network was trained on a very heterogeneous clinical electroencephalogram dataset. In total, eight different types of seizures were considered, and the patients were of various ages, health conditions and they were observed under clinical conditions. Despite this, the classifier presented in this paper achieved sensitivity and specificity equal to 0.68 and 0.67, accordingly, which is a significant improvement as compared to the known results for clinical data.

Convolutional capsule network for classification of breast cancer histology images

Automatization of the diagnosis of any kind of disease is of great importance and it's gaining speed as more and more deep learning solutions are applied to different problems. One of such computer aided systems could be a decision support too able to accurately differentiate between different types of breast cancer histological images - normal tissue or carcinoma. In this paper authors present a deep learning solution, based on convolutional capsule network for classification of four types of images of breast tissue biopsy when hematoxylin and eusin staining is applied. The cross-validation accuracy was achieved to be 0.87 with equaly high sensitivity.

Application of Bayesian Methods for Age-dependent Reliability Analysis

In this paper authors present a general methodology for age dependent reliability analysis of degrading or ageing systems, structures and components. The methodology is based on Bayesian methods and inference, its ability to incorporate prior information and on idea that ageing can be thought as age dependent change of believes about reliability parameters, when change of belief occurs not just due to new failure data or other information which becomes available in time, but also it continuously changes due to flow of time and beliefs evolution. The main objective of this paper is to present the clear way of how Bayesian methods can be applied by practitioners to deal with risk and reliability analysis considering ageing phenomena. The methodology describes step by step failure rate analysis of ageing systems: from the Bayesian model building to its verification and generalization with Bayesian model averaging which, as authors suggest in this paper, could serve as alternative for various goodness of fit assessment tools and as universal tool to cope with various sources of uncertainty.
