Stochastic Resonance in Two Dimensional Landau Ginzburg Equation

We study the mechanism of stochastic resonance in a two dimensional Landau Ginzburg equation perturbed by a white noise. We shortly review how to renormalize the equation in order to avoid ultraviolet divergences. Next we show that the renormalization amplifies the effect of the small periodic perturbation in the system. We finally argue that stochastic resonance can be used to highlight the effect of renormalization in spatially extended system with a bistable equilibria.

Intermittency in Turbulence: computing the scaling exponents in shell models

We discuss a stochastic closure for the equation of motion satisfied by multi-scale correlation functions in the framework of shell models of turbulence. We give a systematic procedure to calculate the anomalous scaling exponents of structure functions by using the exact constraints imposed by the equation of motion. We present an explicit calculation for fifth order scaling exponent at varying the free parameter entering in the non-linear term of the model. The same method applied to the case of shell models for Kraichnan passive scalar provides a connection between the concept of zero-modes and time-dependent cascade processes.

Shell Model for Drag Reduction with Polymer Additive in Homogeneous Turbulence

Recent direct numerical simulations of the FENE-P model of non-Newtonian hydrodynamics revealed that the phenomenon of drag reduction by polymer additives exists (albeit in reduced form) also in homogeneous turbulence. We introduce here a simple shell model for homogeneous viscoelastic flows that recaptures the essential observations of the full simulations. The simplicity of the shell model allows us to offer a transparent explanation of the main observations. It is shown that the mechanism for drag reduction operates mainly on the large scales. Understanding the mechanism allows us to predict how the amount of drag reduction depends of the various parameters in the model. The main conclusion is that drag reduction is not a universal phenomenon, it peaks in a window of parameters like Reynolds number and the relaxation rate of the polymer.

A Gibbs-like measure for single-time, multi-scale energy transfer in stochastic signals and Shell Model of turbulence

A Gibbs-like approach for simultaneous multi-scale correlation functions in random, time-dependent, multiplicative processes for the turbulent energy cascade is investigated. We study the optimal log-normal Gibbs-like distribution able to describe the subtle effects induced by non-trivial time dependency on both single-scale (structure functions) and multi-scale correlation functions. We provide analytical expression for the general multi-scale correlation functions in terms of the two-point correlations between multipliers and we show that the log-normal distribution is already accurate enough to reproduce quantitatively many of the observed behavior. The main result is that non-trivial time effects renormalize the Gibbs-like effective potential necessary to describe single-time statistics. We also present a generalization of this approach to more general, non log-normal, potential. In the latter case one obtains a formal expansion of both structure functions and multi-scale correlations in terms of cumulants of all orders.

Intermittency in Turbulence: Multiplicative random process in space and time

We present a simple stochastic algorithm for generating multiplicative processes with multiscaling both in space and in time. With this algorithm we are able to reproduce a synthetic signal with the same space and time correlation as the one coming from shell models for turbulence and the one coming from a turbulent velocity field in a quasi-Lagrangian reference frame.

A simple model for drag reduction

Direct Numerical Simulations established that the FENE-P model of viscoelastic flows exhibits the phenomenon of turbulent drag reduction which is caused in experiments by dilute polymeric additives. To gain analytic understanding of the phenomenon we introduce in this Letter a simple 1-dimensional model of the FENE-P equations. We demonstrate drag reduction in the simple model, and explain analytically the main observations which include (i) reduction of velocity gradients for fixed throughput and (ii) increase of throughput for fixed dissipation.

Turbulent channel flow simulations using a coarse-grained extension of the Lattice Boltzmann method

A coarse-grained version of the Lattice Boltzmann (LB) method is developed with the intent of enhancing its geometrical flexibility so as to be able to tackle a wider class of flows of engineering interest. To this purpose, the original uniform LB technique is combined with standard finite-volume techniques based upon a blend of piecewise constant and piecewise linear interpolation schemes. A series of validation tests for the three dimensional channel flow with one-dimensional (cross-channel) statistical behaviour are presented. The main conclusion is that, although the method does indeed mark a significant stride forward with respect to the original uniform LB scheme, better interpolation schemes should be developed before the coarse-grain LB can become fully competitive with modern CFD schemes.

Scaling and Dissipation in the GOY Shell Model

This is a paper about multi-fractal scaling and dissipation in a shell model of turbulence, called the GOY model. This set of equations describes a one dimensional cascade of energy towards higher wave vectors. When the model is chaotic, the high-wave-vector velocity is a product of roughly independent multipliers, one for each logarithmic momentum shell. The appropriate tool for studying the multifractal properties of this model is shown to be the energy current on each shell rather than the velocity on each shell. Using this quantity, one can obtain better measurements of the deviations from Kolmogorov scaling (in the GOY dynamics) than were available up to now. These deviations are seen to depend upon the details of inertial-range structure of the model and hence are {\em not} universal. However, once the conserved quantities of the model are fixed to have the same scaling structure as energy and helicity, these deviations seem to depend only weakly upon the scale parameter of the model. We analyze the connection between multifractality in the velocity distribution and multifractality in the dissipation. Our arguments suggest that the connection is universal for models of this character, but the model has a different behavior from that of real turbulence. We also predict the scaling behavior of time correlations of shell-velocities, of the dissipation,
