Beta functions for the duality-invariant sigma model

The $O(d,d)$ invariant worldsheet theory for bosonic string theory with $d$ abelian isometries is employed to compute the beta functions and Weyl anomaly at one-loop. We show that vanishing of the Weyl anomaly coefficients implies the equations of motion of the Maharana-Schwarz action. We give a self-contained introduction into the required techniques, including beta functions, the Weyl anomaly for two-dimensional sigma models and the background field method. This sets the stage for a sequel to this paper on generalizations to higher loops and $α'$ corrections.

One-loop quantum gravity from the N=4 spinning particle

We construct a spinning particle that reproduces the propagation of the graviton on those curved backgrounds which solve the Einstein equations, with or without cosmological constant, i.e. Einstein manifolds. It is obtained by modifying the N=4 supersymmetric spinning particle by relaxing the gauging of the full SO(4) R-symmetry group to a parabolic subgroup, and selecting suitable Chern-Simons couplings on the worldline. We test it by computing the correct one-loop divergencies of quantum gravity in D=4.

Old Dualities and New Anomalies

We revisit the question whether the worldsheet theory of a string admits a global O(d,d) symmetry. We consider the truncation of the target space theory in which fields are independent of d coordinates, which is O(d,d,R) invariant. The worldsheet theory is not O(d,d,R) invariant, unless it is truncated by setting winding and center-of-mass momenta to zero. We prove consistency of this truncation and give a manifestly O(d,d,R) invariant action, generalizing a formulation due to Tseytlin by including all external and internal target space fields. It is shown that, due to chiral bosons, this symmetry is anomalous. The anomaly is cancelled by a Green-Schwarz mechanism that utilizes the external B-field.

Leibniz Gauge Theories and Infinity Structures

We formulate gauge theories based on Leibniz(-Loday) algebras and uncover their underlying mathematical structure. Various special cases have been developed in the context of gauged supergravity and exceptional field theory. These are based on `tensor hierarchies', which describe towers of $p$-form gauge fields transforming under non-abelian gauge symmetries and which have been constructed up to low levels. Here we define `infinity-enhanced Leibniz algebras' that guarantee the existence of consistent tensor hierarchies to arbitrary level. We contrast these algebras with strongly homotopy Lie algebras ($L_{\infty}$ algebras), which can be used to define topological field theories for which all curvatures vanish. Any infinity-enhanced Leibniz algebra carries an associated $L_{\infty}$ algebra, which we discuss.

A Worldline Theory for Supergravity

The $\cal{N}=4$ supersymmetric spinning particle admits several consistent quantizations, related to the gauging of different subgroups of the $SO(4)$ $R$-symmetry on the worldline. We construct the background independent BRST quantization for all of these choices which are shown to reproduce either the massless NS-NS spectrum of the string, or Einstein theory with or without the antisymmetric tensor field and/or dilaton corresponding to different restrictions. Quantum consistency of the worldline implies equations of motion for the background which, in addition to the admissible string backgrounds, admit Einstein manifolds with or whithout a cosmological constant. The vertex operators for the Kalb-Ramond, graviton and dilaton fields are obtained from the linear variations of the BRST charge. They produce the physical states by action on the diffeomorphism ghost states.

Duality Hierarchies and Differential Graded Lie Algebras

The gauge theories underlying gauged supergravity and exceptional field theory are based on tensor hierarchies: generalizations of Yang-Mills theory utilizing algebraic structures that generalize Lie algebras and, as a consequence, require higher-form gauge fields. Recently, we proposed that the algebraic structure allowing for consistent tensor hierarchies is axiomatized by `infinity-enhanced Leibniz algebras' defined on graded vector spaces generalizing Leibniz algebras. It was subsequently shown that, upon appending additional vector spaces, this structure can be reinterpreted as a differential graded Lie algebra. We use this observation to streamline the construction of general tensor hierarchies, and we formulate dynamics in terms of a hierarchy of first-order duality relations, including scalar fields with a potential.

Einstein gravity from the ${\N=4}$ spinning particle

We obtain a manifestly background independent BRST quantization of the $\N=4$ supersymmetric spinning particle. We show that nilpotency of the BRST charge $Q$ implies the Einstein equations admitting a cosmological constant of indefinite sign. The physical graviton states are given by the vertex operator, obtained by an infinitesimal variation of $Q$, acting on diffeomorphism ghost states. In addition, the tree-point graviton scattering vertex is correctly reproduced by the worldline computation with these vertex operators.

Noncommutative Wilson lines in higher-spin theory and correlation functions of conserved currents for free conformal fields

We first prove that, in Vasiliev's theory, the zero-form charges studied in 1103.2360 and 1208.3880 are twisted open Wilson lines in the noncommutative $Z$ space. This is shown by mapping Vasiliev's higher-spin model on noncommutative Yang--Mills theory. We then prove that, prior to Bose-symmetrising, the cyclically-symmetric higher-spin invariants given by the leading order of these $n$-point zero-form charges are equal to corresponding cyclically-invariant building blocks of $n$-point correlation functions of bilinear operators in free conformal field theories (CFT) in three dimensions. On the higher spin gravity side, our computation reproduces the results of 1210.7963 using an alternative method amenable to the computation of subleading corrections obtained by perturbation theory in normal order. On the free CFT side, our proof involves the explicit computation of the separate cyclic building blocks of the correlation functions of $n$ conserved currents in arbitrary dimension $d>2$, using polarization vectors, which is an original result. It is shown to agree, for $d=3$, with the results obtained in 1301.3123 in various dimensions and where polarization spinors were used.

Bosonic Higher Spin Gravity in any Dimension with Dynamical Two-Form

We first propose an alternative to Vasiliev's bosonic higher spin gravities in any dimension by factoring out a modified sp(2) gauge algebra. We evidence perturbative equivalence of the two models, which have the same spectrum of Fronsdal fields at the linearized level. We then embed the new model into a flat Quillen superconnection containing two extra master fields in form degrees one and two; more generally, the superconnection contains additional degrees of freedom associated to various deformations of the underlying non-commutative geometry. Finally, we propose that by introducing first-quantized sp(2) ghosts and duality extending the field content, the Quillen flatness condition can be unified with the sp(2) gauge conditions into a single flatness condition that is variational with a Frobenius-Chern-Simons action functional.

Induced Action for Conformal Higher Spins from Worldline Path Integrals

Conformal higher spin (CHS) fields, despite being non unitary, provide a remarkable example of a consistent interacting higher spin theory in flat space background, that is local to all orders. The non-linear action is defined as the logarithmically UV divergent part of a one-loop scalar effective action. In this paper we take a particle model, that describes the interaction of a scalar particle to the CHS background, and compute its path integral on the circle. We thus provide a worldline representation for the CHS action, and rederive its quadratic part. We plan to come back to the subject, to compute cubic and higher vertices, in a future work.

The Schouten tensor as a connection in the unfolding of 3D conformal higher-spin fields

A first-order differential equation is provided for a one-form, spin-s connection valued in the two-row, width-(s-1) Young tableau of GL(5). The connection is glued to a zero-form identified with the spin-s Cotton tensor. The usual zero-Cotton equation for a symmetric, conformal spin-s tensor gauge field in 3D is the flatness condition for the sum of the GL(5) spin-s and background connections. This presentation of the equations allows to reformulate in a compact way the cohomological problem studied in 1511.07389, featuring the spin-s Schouten tensor. We provide full computational details for spin 3 and 4 and present the general spin-s case in a compact way.

Frobenius-Chern-Simons gauge theory

Given a set of differential forms on an odd-dimensional noncommutative manifold valued in an internal associative algebra H, we show that the most general cubic covariant Hamiltonian action, without mass terms, is controlled by an Z_2-graded associative algebra F with a graded symmetric nondegenerate bilinear form. The resulting class of models provide a natural generalization of the Frobenius-Chern-Simons model (FCS) that was proposed in arXiv:1505.04957 as an off-shell formulation of the minimal bosonic four-dimensional higher spin gravity theory. If F is unital and the Z_2-grading is induced from a Klein operator that is outer to a proper Frobenius subalgebra, then the action can be written on a form akin to topological open string field theory in terms of a superconnection valued in the direct product of H and F. We give a new model of this type based on a twisting of C[Z_2 x Z_4], which leads to self-dual complexified gauge fields on AdS_4. If F is 3-graded, the FCS model can be truncated consistently as to zero-form constraints on-shell. Two examples thereof are a twisting of C[(Z_2)^3] that yields the original model, and the Clifford algebra Cl_2n which provides an FCS formulation of the bosonic Konstein--Vasiliev model with gauge algebra hu(4^{n-1},0).

Action principles for higher and fractional spin gravities

We review various off-shell formulations for interacting higher-spin systems in dimensions 3 and 4. Associated with higher-spin systems in spacetime dimension 4 is a Chern-Simons action for a superconnection taking its values in a direct product of an infinite-dimensional algebra of oscillators and a Frobenius algebra. A crucial ingredient of the model is that it elevates the rigid closed and central two-form of Vasiliev's theory to a dynamical 2-form and doubles the higher-spin algebra, thereby considerably reducing the number of possible higher spin invariants and giving a nonzero effective functional on-shell. The two action principles we give for higher-spin systems in 3D are based on Chern-Simons and BF models. In the first case, the theory we give unifies higher-spin gauge fields with fractional-spin fields and an internal sector. In particular, Newton's constant is related to the coupling constant of the internal sector. In the second case, the BF action we review gives the fully nonlinear Prokushkin-Vasiliev, bosonic equations for matter-coupled higher spins in 3D. We present the truncation to a single, real matter field relevant in the Gaberdiel-Gopakumar holographic duality. The link between the various actions we present is the fact that they all borrow ingredients from Topological Field Theory. It has bee conjectured that there is an underlying and unifying 2-dimensional first-quantised description of the previous higher-spin models in 3D and 4D, in the form of a Cattaneo-Felder-like topological action containing fermionic fields.

An Action for Matter Coupled Higher Spin Gravity in Three Dimensions

We propose a covariant Hamiltonian action for the Prokushkin and Vasiliev's matter coupled higher spin gravity in three dimensions. The action is formulated on ${\cal X}_4 \times {\cal Z}_2$ where ${\cal X}_4$ is an open manifold whose boundary contains spacetime and ${\cal Z}_2$ is a noncommutative twistor space. We examine various consistent truncations to models of BF type in ${\cal X}_4$ and ${\cal Z}_2$ with B$^2$ terms and central elements. They are obtained by integrating out the matter fields in the presence of a vacuum expectation value $ν\in \mathbb{R}$ for the zero-form master field. For $ν=0$, we obtain a model on ${\cal X}_4$ containing Blencowe's action and a model on ${\cal Z}_2$ containing the Prokushkin--Segal--Vasiliev action. For generic $ν$ (including $ν=0$), we propose an alternative model on ${\cal X}_4$ with gauge fields in the Weyl algebra of Wigner's deformed oscillator algebra and Lagrange multipliers in the algebra of operators acting in the Fock representation space of the deformed oscillators.

Spinning particles and higher spin field equations

Relativistic particles with higher spin can be described in first quantization using actions with local supersymmetry on the worldline. First, we present a brief review of these actions and their use in first quantization. In a Dirac quantization scheme the field equations emerge as Dirac constraints on the Hilbert space, and we outline how they lead to the description of higher spin fields in terms of the more standard Fronsdal-Labastida equations. Then, we describe how these actions can be extended so that the propagating particle is allowed to take different values of the spin, i.e. carry a reducible representation of the Poincaré group. This way one may identify a four dimensional model that carries the same degrees of freedom of the minimal Vasiliev's interacting higher spin field theory. Extensions to massive particles and to propagation on (A)dS spaces are also briefly commented upon.

2D Poisson Sigma Models with Gauged Vectorial Supersymmetry

In this note, we gauge the rigid vectorial supersymmetry of the two-dimensional Poisson sigma model presented in arXiv:1503.05625. We show that the consistency of the construction does not impose any further constraints on the differential Poisson algebra geometry than those required for the ungauged model. We conclude by proposing that the gauged model provides a first-quantized framework for higher spin gravity.

A worldline approach to colored particles

Relativistic particle actions are a useful tool to describe quantum field theory effective actions using a string-inspired first-quantized approach. Here we describe how to employ suitable particle actions in the computation of the scalar contribution to the one-loop gluon effective action. We use the well-known method of introducing auxiliary variables that create the color degrees of freedom. In a path integral they implement automatically the path ordering needed to ensure gauge invariance. It is known that the color degrees of freedom introduced this way form a reducible representation of the gauge group. We describe a method of projecting onto the fundamental representation (or any other chosen irrep, if desired) of the gauge group. Previously, we have discussed the case of anticommuting auxiliary variables. Choosing them to be in the fundamental representation allows to obtain, without any extra effort, also the situation in which the color is given by any antisymmetric tensor product of the fundamental. Here, we describe the novel case of bosonic auxiliary variables. They can be used equivalently for creating the color charges in the fundamental representation. In addition one gets, as a byproduct, the cases where the particle can have the color sitting in any symmetric tensor product of the fundamental. This is obtained by tuning to a different value a Chern Simons coupling, present in the model, which controls how the projection is achieved.

Graviton self-energy from worldlines

Worldline approaches, when available, often simplify and make more efficient the calculation of various observables in quantum field theories. In this contribution we first review the calculation of the graviton self-energy due to a loop of virtual particles of spin 0, 1/2 and 1, all of which have a well-known worldline description. For the case of the graviton itself, an elegant worldline description is still missing, though one can still describe it by constructing a worldline representation of the differential operators that arise in the quadratic approximation of the Einstein-Hilbert action. We have recently analyzed the latter approach, and we use it here to calculate the one-loop graviton self energy due to the graviton itself in this formalism.
