$0-\pi$ transitions in non-Hermitian magnetic Josephson junctions

We study the transport properties of non-Hermitian magnetic Josephson junctions, considering a superconductor-quantum dot-superconductor device coupled to a ferromagnetic metallic reservoir in the presence of an external magnetic field. We focus on the $0-\pi$ transitions that occur when the equilibrium phase difference between the superconductors shifts from $\phi=0$ to $\phi=\pi$ upon increasing the magnetic field amplitude. The coupling to the environment induces spin-dependent dissipation and leads to the broadening of the junction Andreev levels. By combining Green's function calculations with an effective non-Hermitian description restricted to the sub-gap Andreev quasi-bound states, we show that dissipation shifts the $0-\pi$ transition to higher magnetic fields. Remarkably, also the relative angle between the applied field and the reservoir magnetization can be used to drive the transition, at fixed field magnitude. We demonstrate that this effect can be entirely ascribed to the behavior of the complex eigenvalues of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. These findings highlight non-Hermiticity as a resource that can introduce new control knobs for engineering the current-phase relation in superconducting junctions.

Supercurrent from the imaginary part of the Andreev levels in non-Hermitian Josephson junctions

We investigate the electronic transport properties of a superconductor-quantum dot-superconductor Josephson junction coupled to a ferromagnetic metal reservoir in the presence of an external magnetic field. The device is described by an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, whose complex eigenvalues encode the energy (real part) and the broadening (imaginary part) of the Andreev quasi-bound states. When extending the Andreev current formula to the non-Hermitian case, a novel contribution arises that is proportional to the phase derivative of the levels broadening. This term becomes particularly relevant in the presence of exceptional points (EPs) in the spectrum, but its experimental detection is not straightforward. We identify optimal Andreev spectrum configurations where this novel current contribution can be clearly highlighted, and we outline an experimental protocol for its detection. We point out that the phase dependence in the levels imaginary part originates from the breaking of a time-reversal-like symmetry. In particular, spectral configurations in the broken phase of the symmetry and without EPs can be obtained, where this novel contribution can be easily resolved. The proposed protocol would allow to probe for the first time a fingerprint of non-Hermiticity in open junctions that is not strictly related to the presence of EPs.

Andreev non-Hermitian Hamiltonian for open Josephson junctions from Green's functions

We investigate the transport properties of open Josephson junctions (JJs) through a minimal effective non-Hermitian (NH) approach derived from the equilibrium Green's function (GF) formalism. Specifically, we consider a JJ with a quantum dot barrier coupled to a normal metal reservoir. The coupling introduces an imaginary self-energy term in the JJ Hamiltonian which can be naturally accounted for in the NH formalism. While most approaches to similar problems work with the full junction Hamiltonian we propose a scheme for deriving an effective NH Hamiltonian for the Andreev levels only, that we compute from the singular part of the barrier GF. To establish the range of applicability of this NH model we benchmark our results for both the dot density of states and the supercurrent against exact GF predictions in different transport regimes. We find that, as a rule of thumb, the Andreev NH description is accurate when the spectral overlap between the Andreev bound states (ABS) and the near-gap continuum states is negligible, i.e. when the ABS energies lie sufficiently far from the superconducting gap relative to their line-width. This method not only highlights the effective physics of the JJ but also offers a scalable framework for studying large-size devices.

Andreev spin-noise detector

We investigate the possibility to employ magnetic Josephson junctions as magnetic-noise detectors. To illustrate our idea, we consider a system consisting of a quantum dot coupled to superconducting leads in the presence of an external magnetic field. Under appropriate assumptions, we relate the noise in the Josephson current to magnetization noise. At the magnetic field driven $0-π$ transition the junction sensitivity as magnetic noise detector is strongly enhanced and it diverges in the zero temperature limit. Moreover, we demonstrate that, if also dot energy is affected by fluctuations, only the magnetic noise channel contributes to Josephson current noise response when the quantum dot is tuned in resonance with superconducting leads.

Realization of 0 - $π$ states in SFIS Josephson junctions. The role of spin-orbit interaction and lattice impurities

Josephson devices with ferromagnetic barriers have been widely studied. Much less is known when the ferromagnetic layer is insulating. In this manuscript we investigate the transport properties of superconductor-ferromagnetic insulator-superconductor (SFIS) junctions with particular attention to the temperature behavior of the critical current, that may be used as a fingerprint of the junction. We investigate the specific role of impurities as well as of possible spin mixing mechanisms, due to the spin orbit coupling. Transition between the 0 and the $π$ phases can be properly tuned, thus achieving stable $π$ junctions over the whole temperature range, that may be possibly employed in superconducting quantum circuits.
