The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: The power spectrum and the matter content of the universe

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey has now measured in excess of 160000 galaxy redshifts. This paper presents the power spectrum of the galaxy distribution, calculated using a direct FFT-based technique. We argue that, within the k-space region 0.02<k<0.15 h Mpc^-1, the shape of this spectrum should be close to that of the linear density perturbations convolved with the window function of the survey. This window function and its convolving effect on the power spectrum estimate are analyzed in detail. By convolving model spectra, we are able to fit the power-spectrum data and provide a measure of the matter content of the universe. Our results show that models containing baryon oscillations are mildly preferred over featureless power spectra. Analysis of the data yields 68% confidence limits on the total matter density times the Hubble parameter Ω_m h = 0.20 +/- 0.03, and the baryon fraction Ω_b/Ω_m = 0.15 +/- 0.07, assuming scale-invariant primordial fluctuations.

Clusters of Galaxies in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey has obtained 135,000 redshifts for galaxies in two broad strips. Here we present the first results of a 3-dimensional search for galaxy clusters based on known 2-dimensional compilations. We derive new redshifts and velocity dispersions for clusters, assess the level of contamination in the sample, analyze the accuracy of photometric redshift estimates and study the space distribution of clusters.

How Galaxies Disguise Their Ages

We calculate the contribution to Balmer line indices from far ultraviolet component sources. We find that this is significant, and may lead to identification of spurious age differences of the order of a total span of $\sim 6$ Gyrs or $\sim 15%$ size bursts observed a few Gyrs after star formation stops. We suggest that claims for intermediate age populations in early-type galaxies may need to be reconsidered in the light of this new evidence.

The Infrared Luminosity Function of Galaxies in the Coma Cluster

An infrared survey of the central 650 arcmin$^2$ of the Coma cluster is used to determine the $H$ band luminosity function for the cluster. Redshifts are available for all galaxies in the survey with $H < 14.5$, and for this sample we obtain a good fit to a Schechter function with $H^*=11.13$ and $α=-0.78$. These luminosity function parameters are similar to those measured for field galaxies in the infrared, which is surprising considering the very different environmental densities and, presumably, merger histories for field galaxies. For fainter galaxies, we use two independent techniques to correct for field galaxy contamination in the cluster population: the $B-R$ color-magnitude relation and an estimate for the level of background and foreground contamination from the literature. Using either method we find a steep upturn for galaxies with $14 < H < 16$, with slope $α\simeq 1.7$.
